TitleWhiskey Beach

AuthorNora Roberts

GenreRomance Mystery

Publication DateApril 16, 2013

For more than three hundred years, Bluff House has sat above Whiskey Beach, guarding its shore—and its secrets. But to Eli Landon, it’s home…

A Boston lawyer, Eli has weathered an intense year of public scrutiny and police investigations after being accused of—but never arrested for—the murder of his soon-to-be-ex wife.

He finds sanctuary at Bluff House, even though his beloved grandmother is in Boston recuperating from a nasty fall. Abra Walsh is always there, though. Whiskey Beach’s resident housekeeper, yoga instructor, jewelry maker, and massage therapist, Abra is a woman of many talents—including helping Eli take control of his life and clear his name. But as they become entangled in each other, they find themselves caught in a net that stretches back for centuries—one that has ensnared a man intent on reaping the rewards of destroying Eli Landon once and for all…

WHY I CANNOT WAIT: I am a huge fan of Nora Roberts, and I will read anything that she writes. Whiskey Beach centers around a man wrongly accused of murder. I love her mysteries with a twist of romance. I’m interested in the setup of this story and how she’ll introduce the main character, tell his past, and relay his present life in his new sanctuary. She always finds a way to engage her readers, and I always find something new to learn.

TitleTwice Tempted

AuthorJeaniene Frost

Genre: Paranormal Romance

SeriesNight Prince (Book 2)

Publication Date: March 26, 2013

Dating the Prince of Darkness has its challenges . . .

Leila’s psychic abilities have been failing her, and now she isn’t sure what the future holds. If that weren’t enough, her lover Vlad has been acting distant. Though Leila is a mere mortal, she’s also a modern woman who refuses to accept the cold shoulder treatment forever–especially from the darkly handsome vampire who still won’t admit that he loves her . . .

Like choosing between eternal love and a loveless eternity . . .

Soon circumstances send Leila back to the carnival circuit, where tragedy strikes. And when she finds herself in the crosshairs of a killer who may be closer than she realizes, Leila must decide who to trust– the fiery vampire who arouses her passions like no other or the tortured knight who longs to be more than a friend? With danger stalking her every step of the way, all it takes is one wrong move to damn her for eternity . . .

WHY I CANNOT WAIT: I am fairly new to Jeaniene Frost, only having read her Night Huntress series early of 2012. But once I was introduced to Vlad, I knew I was hooked. Sure, Bones is a sexy force to be reckoned with, but there is something to be said about tall, dark, and full of secrets Vlad. He keeps to himself, and from what I’ve learned in the first book of his series, he has a heart of gold. Well, hidden under all that pain and suffering of course.

TitlePaper Valentine

AuthorBrenna Yovanoff

GenreYA Paranormal

Publication Date: January 8, 2013

The city of Ludlow is gripped by the hottest July on record. The asphalt is melting, the birds are dying, petty crime is on the rise, and someone in Hannah Wagnor’s peaceful suburban community is killing girls.

For Hannah, the summer is a complicated one. Her best friend Lillian died six months ago, and Hannah just wants her life to go back to normal. But how can things be normal when Lillian’s ghost is haunting her bedroom, pushing her to investigate the mysterious string of murders? Hannah’s just trying to understand why her friend self-destructed, and where she fits now that Lillian isn’t there to save her a place among the social elite. And she must stop thinking about Finny Boone, the big, enigmatic delinquent whose main hobbies seem to include petty larceny and surprising acts of kindness.

With the entire city in a panic, Hannah soon finds herself drawn into a world of ghost girls and horrifying secrets. She realizes that only by confronting the Valentine Killer will she be able move on with her life—and it’s up to her to put together the pieces before he strikes again.

WHY I CANNOT WAIT: It’s hard to put into exact words why I want Paper Valentine so much. Yovanoff is an amazing author. The cover is absolutely gorgeous. And that synopsis? To die for. Paper Valentine has so many elements that promise a fantastic read. Love and death told in a poetic and lyrical way is romantic, yet dark and creepy from ghosts and mysteries. Plus, if I can gauge Paper Valentine off Yovanoff’s other works (The Space Between and The Replacement), then I know I will instantly love it.

TitleMila 2.0

AuthorDebra Driza

Genre: YA Science Fiction

SeriesMila 2.0 (Book 1)

Publication DateMarch 12, 2013

Mila 2.0 is the first book in an electrifying sci-fi thriller series about a teenage girl who discovers that she is an experiment in artificial intelligence.

Mila was never meant to learn the truth about her identity. She was a girl living with her mother in a small Minnesota town. She was supposed to forget her past —that she was built in a secret computer science lab and programmed to do things real people would never do.

Now she has no choice but to run—from the dangerous operatives who want her terminated because she knows too much and from a mysterious group that wants to capture her alive and unlock her advanced technology. However, what Mila’s becoming is beyond anyone’s imagination, including her own, and it just might save her life.

WHY I CANNOT WAIT: I was first drawn to the cover. The gorgeous cover model, the disintegrating pixels, the simple and futuristic font all play a part into why I covet this book. But after reading the synopsis, I knew that I had to read it. Operatives in a science fiction thriller? Sign me up! Experimentation in artificial intelligence? Yes, please! So many elements that I love in a story, and I cannot wait to get my hands on Driza’s debut novel.

Genre: YA Fantasy

SeriesThe Dragon King Chronicles (Book 1)

Publication Date: January 15, 2013

The greatest warrior in all of the Seven Kingdoms… is a girl with yellow eyes.

Kira’s the only female in the king’s army, and the prince’s bodyguard. She’s a demon slayer and an outcast, hated by nearly everyone in her home city of Hansong. And, she’s their only hope…

Murdered kings and discovered traitors point to a demon invasion, sending Kira on the run with the young prince. He may be the savior predicted in the Dragon King Prophecy, but the missing treasure of myth may be the true key. With only the guidance of the cryptic prophecy, Kira must battle demon soldiers, evil shaman, and the Demon Lord himself to find what was once lost and raise a prince into a king.

Intrigue and mystery, ancient lore and action-packed fantasy come together in this heart-stopping first book in a trilogy.

WHY I CANNOT WAIT: I’ve seen a lot of strong heroines in my time, and Oh’s Prophecy promises another strong one. The fact that the main character is the only female in the king’s army is the main reason why I want to read Prophecy. The other reasons revolve around the fact that Prophecy has so many wonderful fantasy elements, like dragons, demons, sword action, and the list goes on. The cover is gorgeous, and I simply cannot wait to take a peek inside this world.

TitleShades of Earth

AuthorBeth Revis

Genre: YA Science Fiction

SeriesAcross the Universe (Book 3)

Publication Date: January 15, 2013

Amy and Elder have finally left the oppressive walls of the spaceshipGodspeed behind. They’re ready to start life afresh–to build a home–on Centauri-Earth, the planet that Amy has traveled 25 trillion miles across the universe to experience.

But this new Earth isn’t the paradise Amy had been hoping for. There are giant pterodactyl-like birds, purple flowers with mind-numbing toxins, and mysterious, unexplained ruins that hold more secrets than their stone walls first let on. The biggest secret of all? Godspeed‘s former passengers aren’t alone on this planet. And if they’re going to stay, they’ll have to fight.

Amy and Elder must race to discover who–or what–else is out there if they are to have any hope of saving their struggling colony and building a future together. They will have to look inward to the very core of what makes them human on this, their most harrowing journey yet. Because if the colony collapses? Then everything they have sacrificed–friends, family, life on Earth–will have been for nothing.

WHY I CANNOT WAIT: I love Science Fiction. And more than that? I love a world that has been created inside a spaceship. Revis’ Across the Universe series revolves around the life and culture inside a spaceship. And when there isn’t anywhere to go and chaos ensues, what do the characters do? Revis told us exactly what they did and it was all done in this unique and alluring way. I fell in love with each character, hated some others, then loved them all in the end. Each scene, story climax, and evolving character added to the simplicity and complexity of the series. It was nice to see that while the ship was an obstacle course, it didn’t hinder the story that much. But the best part? Well, the story has this dynamic shift because the world changes. See? Amazing!

SeriesUnearthly (Book 3)

Publication Date: January 22, 2013

The past few years have held more surprises than part-angel Clara Gardner could ever have anticipated. Yet from the dizzying highs of first love, to the agonizing low of losing someone close to her, the one thing she can no longer deny is that she was never meant to live a normal life.

Since discovering the special role she plays among the other angel-bloods, Clara has been determined to protect Tucker Avery from the evil that follows her . . . even if it means breaking both their hearts. Leaving town seems like the best option, so she’s headed back to California – and so is Christian Prescott, the irresistible boy from the vision that started her on this journey in the first place.

As Clara makes her way in a world that is frighteningly new, she discovers that the fallen angel who attacked her is watching her every move. And he’s not the only one. . . . With the battle against the Black Wings looming, Clara knows she must finally fulfil her destiny. But it won’t come without sacrifices and betrayal.

In the riveting finale of the Unearthly series, Clara must decide her fate once and for all.

WHY I CANNOT WAIT: My favorite part of the series? Tucker. He is one of the swooniest boys that I know. Aside from that, I love the different paranormal element of angels. Yes, books about angels have been around, especially in the YA genre, but the Unearthly series was one of my first introductions into this world and genre. Hand brings the emotions out of the reader, the good, the bad, and the ugly cries from swoony moments.

SeriesBloodlines (Book 3)

Publication Date: February 12, 2013

In the aftermath of a forbidden moment that rocked Sydney to her core, she finds herself struggling to draw the line between her Alchemist teachings and what her heart is urging her to do. Then she meets alluring, rebellious Marcus Finch–a former Alchemist who escaped against all odds, and is now on the run. Marcus wants to teach Sydney the secrets he claims the Alchemists are hiding from her. But as he pushes her to rebel against the people who raised her, Sydney finds that breaking free is harder than she thought. There is an old and mysterious magic rooted deeply within her. And as she searches for an evil magic user targeting powerful young witches, she realizes that her only hope is to embrace her magical blood–or else she might be next.

WHY I CANNOT WAIT: Mead’s Bloodlines series is a different side of the life of the characters created in The Vampire Academy. Specifically, Sydney is one of the most fascinating characters I’ve met. I’m glad that this series was created, and I’m especially grateful that Mead expanded more on Sydney’s life and the life of Alchemists. It’s a different element, a different world, something that I’ve never read about before. The culture and world that Mead created in the prior books and series is something that captivates me. I cannot wait to dive in once more into this world that Mead has created. And it doesn’t hurt that Vladmir shows up on occasion.

SeriesNightshade Prequel #2

Publication DateJanuary 8, 2013

Everything Conatus stands for is at risk. Hoping to gather enough resistance to save their order, Ember and Barrow attempt a desperate escape. But fate offers little mercy. When their mission is exposed, the  couple face relentless pursuit by the supernatural horrors that act on the commands of Eira’s ally: the mysterious Bosque Mar. A shocking revelation forces Ember out of hiding, sending her back into the heart of dark magic at Tearmunn keep, where she must convince her old friend Alistair of her love or face dire consequences. Ember’s deception offers the only chance for the resistance to succeed, but what she discovers in the shadows beneath the keep will shatter her world and bring about the Witches’ War.

WHY I CANNOT WAIT: Ember is a great heroine and Rise is a fabulous setting for her. Historical and paranormal elements in a rich and detailed world is why I love this series. Cremer has so much talent when setting up her various worlds, and this is no exception. Rift won me over when I read about the daring main character, living her life filled with magic, action, and danger. I couldn’t put the first book down, and I cannot wait to dive into this follow up book. I am anxiously awaiting to see more threads of the Nightshade series piece together.

SeriesNewsoul (Book #2)

Publication DateJanuary 29, 2013

Ana has always been the only one. Asunder. Apart. But after Templedark, when many residents of Heart were lost forever, some hold Ana responsible for the darksouls–and the newsouls who may be born in their place.

Many are afraid of Ana’s presence, a constant reminder of unstoppable changes and the unknown. When sylph begin behaving differently toward her and people turn violent, Ana must learn to stand up not only for herself but for those who cannot stand up for themselves.

Ana was told that nosouls can’t love. But newsouls? More than anything, she wants to live and love as an equal among the citizens of Heart, but even when Sam professes his deepest feelings, it seems impossible to overcome a lifetime of rejection.

WHY I CANNOT WAIT: I loved Incarnate and the world that Meadows created. There is something about her writing that I connect with. From the elements within the story to the details of her world, I am fascinated with everything about this series. I cannot wait to see how Meadows follows up her amazing debut, and simply reinvents her main character. There are questions to be answered, things still unknown from Incarnate. I cannot wait to discover the truth alongside everyone.
