Author Interview: Bloodright by Karin Tabke

We are so pleased to have Karin Tabke here today to talk about her Blood Moon Rising paranormal romance series.  The second book in the series, Bloodright hits shelves today. You can read an excerpt from the book here.  Bloodright will be followed by Blood Vow, which is scheduled to be released on December 4, 2012. As many of you know, Karin is one of my favorite authors and I simply adored the first book in this series, Blood Law. I had to bring in another heavy hitter here at Dark Faerie Tales for a second opinion because I was so torn when I read the second installment. Sheila and I are doing a joint review for Bloodright so be sure to check it out later today.

Author Bio:

For a long time, controlled chaos ruled Karin’s life.  Busy mother of four, owner of her own successful business and wife to a street cop, she harbored thoughts of twisting plots and hot romantic scenes.  Now, with only one child left at home and hubby retired from law enforcement, Karin happily pounds out those steamy scenes at her keyboard.

Still semi-distracted by her adult children (Yay! no more phone calls from the high school!) and her husband now a successful football coach (Yay! No more worrying when he’s out on the street!), Karin turns out stories about hot cops, bold knights, bad boy werewolves, and the women who bring them to their knees.

A full-time writer, Karin draws on a lifetime of stories and backdrops that few outside of the law enforcement community ever see, let alone hear about.  Controlled chaos now reins supreme through the pages she writes where hot heroes serve, protect, and pleasure from page one to The End.

Karin also writes paranormal romantic suspense as Karin Harlow.

Welcome Karin!

DFT: Could you start things off by telling us a little about the Blood Moon Rising Series?

Karin: Think Sons of Anarchy meets Rise of the Lycan.  The trilogy has all the ingredients of a roller coaster romance.  Love, hate, steamy sensual scenes, betrayal, coming of age, loyalties tested and taboo boundaries crossed.  It’s a life and death, hell of ride, but first and foremost it’s a love story.

DFT: What initially sparked the main idea for your world?

Karin: Hubby and I went to see Underworld, Rise of The Lycan.  As I was watching the movie I was thinking about SOA for some reason and the light bulb went off.  What’s hotter than sexy lycan bikers?  Combining that with some facts and some lore, I created my own lycan world and The Blood Moon Rising trilogy was born.

DFT: Can you tell us a little about the main characters in Bloodright?

Karin: Twin brothers, Lucien and Rafael, are mortal enemies.  Lots of bad blood between them and for good reason.  Each is a powerful alpha of powerful packs.  The only thing they have in common is their love for their packs and their hatred for all things Slayer. Until they are further driven apart by the woman they both want above all else:  Falon Corbet.  Half lycan half slayer (they don’t know about the slayer half).  She has more power than both of them combined.  She is key to the survival of not only the brothers, but the entire lycan nation.  Falon is on serious woman when it comes down to what she wants.  She will not take no for an answer.

DFT: If you could describe your main characters with only 3 words, what would they be?

Karin: Rafael: honorable

Lucien: tormented

Falon: torn

DFT: Who is your favorite character in this book and why?

Karin: I’d love to be in Falon’s shoes!  But I have to say, I love the twins.  Rafe is, wow, what can I say about this guy?  He’s hot of course.  Passionate, controlled, and honorable to the marrow.  Lucien is the polar opposite.  Out of control, dishonorable, and wildly sexual.  The brothers have one thing in common, which turns out to be the one thing that separates them:  they both will go to the ends of the earth to possess Falon.

DFT: Do you have a favorite scene or line from Bloodright?

Karin: Oh, let me count them!  There are so many.  I love the intense emotional scenes between Falon and Lucien.  And there are several.  He is so complex and passionate.  But there are a few lighter scenes, one that comes to mind is a sexy scene right after dinner where Lucien shows us a side of him that well, it just made me smile.  I think it will have readers panting. ;)

DFT: Tell us something about your research process and the choices you make when creating the story.

Karin: I love to research and do a lot of it as I go.  I mean I’ll come up with an idea then go research some fact to base it on.  Like the Peter ‘the wolf’ Corbet angle.  He was a real person.  A ‘mighty hunter’.  A Marcher baron charged by Edward I to eradicate England of wolves.  Based on that grain of truth I wove a lore around it.  Then had to do more research to give the lore validity.  As far as choices go, I usually make the hard ones to keep myself on the edge of my seat as I write.  But if it doesn’t feel right as I write, I have deleted 10’s of thousands of words in one key stroke.  That hurts but it wouldn’t hurt as much as disappointed readers.

DFT: Do you have a long-term plan or goal for this story universe? What happens after book 3, Blood Vow?

Karin: You know what?  I’m not done writing BLOOD VOW, so who knows how it will end and if there will be more to tell…

DFT: Romantic tension is an art.  How do you create that tension with your characters?

Karin: The most important ingredient for creating tension is having the right people so that there is an instant and combustive chemical reaction in my brain that transfers to the page.  I know when I put two people together if they have that spark or not.  If they don’t, I go searching for that one that ignites them. I will never force two awesome characters together just because they are singularly awesome.  They have to want to be together and be off the charts awesome together.

After that, the rest comes naturally.   :D

DFT: When and how does foreshadowing important events come into play?

Karin: Foreshadowing is very important, it’s that train we all see coming and are mentally and emotionally bracing for.  Muy importante.  Sprinkle a little here and a little there and before you know it, everyone is screaming, “Watch out!”

DFT: What are the top three elements that are vital to establishing a vivid and detailed world?

Karin: Believability. Creativity.  Passion.

DFT: What paranormal romance series world do you most wish was yours?

Karin: I created two of my favorites: my lycan world and writing as Karin Harlow, the L.O.S.T. world.  But I sure do love the world George R R Martin created.

DFT: How do you keep all the details of your world organized?

Karin: Most of it’s in my head.  I’m a lousy note taker and very unorganized.  I really need to work on that…

DFT: How far in advance do you plot? Chapter by chapter? Book by book? Or do you plan out the whole series before starting?

Karin: I don’t plot.  I’ll go with a theme or an idea, and then write.  The only absolute I must have before I begin a story is knowing who my hero and heroine are, what they want, and how far they will go to get it.  And as the creator, everything is subject to change as the story plays out.  ;)

DFT: What is the best way to establish world-building in paranormal romance without subjecting readers to info dumps?

Karin: Showing it through action and dialogue.  (and this from the author who dedicated several pages in BLOOD LAW to explain the facts and the lore of the Blood Moon Rising. Go figure)

DFT: What is your favorite part of writing this series?

Karin: Living the passion of Rafael, Lucien and Falon.

DFT: What other projects are you working on that you would like to tell us about?

Karin: I’m going to get started on ENEMY SWORN book three in the Harlow L.O.S.T. series.  Right after that, I’m going to work on MASTER OF DECEPTION, the fourth book in my medieval Blood Sword Legacy series.  While working on those I have a few sexy novellas I’ll be working on as well as working on a contemporary romance series proposal that I can’t really discuss at the moment. ;)

DFT: If you could be any paranormal creature, which one would you be and why?

Karin: A lycan of course.  Specifically a she wolf, with two hunky alphas named Lucien Mondragon and Rafael Vulkaisin.  :D

Available on April 3, 2012 from Penguin/Berkley Heat

About the Book:

The coming of the Blood Moon will lead two Lycan packs into war, spur two rival brothers into conflict, and spark an act of vengeance so evil that its effects will be felt for generations.

One woman stands at the center of it all…

After years of waiting, the Blood Law is at last avenged. Lycan Alpha Lucien Mondragon takes revenge on his brother, Rafael. Lucien is poised to slay Rafael’s life mate, the Lycan/Slayer half-breed Falon- but cannot complete the kill. For Falon’s mystical powers and fiery nature awaken a heart Lucien thought long dead. Instead of ending her life, Lucien defiantly marks Falon as his own, tormenting his brother to insanity and spurning Rafael’s blood thirst for his own revenge.

Though terrified by the savage Lucien, Falon finds herself inexplicably drawn to his primal rage and strength by a desire she cannot resist. Torn between the true love she has for Rafael and the burning hunger she holds for Lucien, Falon knows that the will of her heart will lead her to her destined life mate. But it may also doom the Alpha brothers-and the Lycan race-to extinction…

I am loving the L.O.S.T series but man, I have to try this series! I love the Underworld movies and anything inspired by that with those awesome covers has to be good. :)
