Author Interview & Giveaway: Alpha Instinct by Katie Reus

We are so pleased to have Katie Reus here today to talk about her latest release, Alpha InstinctAlpha Instinct is the first book in the Moon Shift series, and will be followed by Lover’s Instinct (August 2012) and Primal Possession (September 2012).  We are also featuring this series in our UF/PNR Reading Challenge 2012. Thanks to Katie, you also have a chance to win a copy of the book.  As always, details are listed at the end of the post.  Make sure you follow the rules to be entered into the contest!

About Katie:

Katie fell in love with romance at a young age thanks to books she pilfered from her mom’s stash. Years later she loves reading romance almost as much as she loves writing it. However, she didn’t always know she wanted to be a writer. After graduating summa cum laude with a degree in psychology and working too many jobs she hated, she finally figured things out.

She now spends her days writing dark paranormal romance and sexy romantic suspense. Her publishers include Carina Press, Harlequin Nocturne, Ellora’s Cave and NAL/Signet Eclipse (Penguin). Regardless of genre, she always includes a happy ending. When she’s not creating stories she loves spending time with her husband and family.

Welcome Katie!

DFT: Could you start things off by telling us a little about Alpha Instinct?

Katie: Ana and Connor are the two main characters in Alpha Instinct, the first story in the Moon Shifter series. They have a history together, which is a theme I absolutely love in romance.

After all the pregnant females and the males in her pack are killed by a mysterious poisoning, Ana is forced to take on the role of pack leader. Without an Alpha, the pack is vulnerable to her neighbor Taggart who wants not only their land, but Ana in his bed as well. Ana and her sisters have no problem running the business side of their ranch on their own, but due to vandalism, cattle mutilation and some other issues they’re struggling with the security of their ranch. With their now-smaller pack numbers, they just can’t handle everything.

When sexy Scottish shifter Connor Armstrong comes back into Ana’s life, promising protection, it’s almost enough to make her forget how he walked out on her before. She can’t forget the way he left without a single word, as if all the time they’d spent together meant nothing to him. However, she puts her pride aside to save her pack. Violent attacks are escalating in town and she has no doubt that sooner or later people are going to start pointing fingers at her kind regardless of proof. Unless they can figure out who’s targeting them and why, a few cattle mutilations and property damage will be the least of their worries. And if Connor doesn’t gain her trust, he’ll never get the chance to claim the one woman who’s never left his thoughts.

DFT: Why did you choose to write about werewolves?

Katie: My introduction into paranormal romance was through vampires and oddly enough I still read mostly about vampires, but I love shifters. I like writing about that fine balance between their human and animal side.

DFT: What initially gave you the idea for your series?

Katie: There wasn’t just one thing. I discovered paranormal romance really late (only a few years ago). And urban fantasy? What was that? For me, romantic suspense was the genre that really introduced me to romance. Only later did I realize there was a LOT more out there and I’m so glad I did. A few years ago I discovered a couple different vampire series’ and became hooked on the world building and the lack of rules and regulations. Even though I adore vampires I’ve always had a love for shifters and werewolves and this series just developed organically.

DFT: Who is your favorite character in this book and why?

Katie: That’s hard, but I’m going to go with Connor, the hero. He left the woman he loved fifty years before the story starts because he believed it was the right thing to do and that kind of love is rare. He put his love for her over his own happiness so even though he’s obstinate and a little bossy at times, he’s totally lovable.

DFT: Do you have a favorite scene in Alpha Instinct?

Katie: There are a few scenes in the beginning I’m particularly fond of when Connor and Ana are getting to know each other again, testing boundaries, flirting and basically falling in love. There is a lot of sexual tension and sometimes miscommunication which is always fun.

DFT: Do you have a particular writing process or ritual?

Katie: Not really. I used to have a pretty strict writing schedule but I have an eight month old son now so I write during his nap times and after he’s gone to bed. It’s pretty hectic at my house most days, but I usually get a high word count in. If that means waking up at 4 before everyone else is awake, that’s what I do. Luckily on the weekends my mother in law helps out and usually watches my son so writing from sunup until sundown is pretty standard for Saturdays. It’s always my big writing day and I look forward to it.

DFT: Which genre do you prefer: Urban Fantasy or Paranormal Romance? Why?

Katie: I actually only very recently started reading UF and I’ve only read a few UF series, most of which I’ve enjoyed. Still, overall I’m going to go with paranormal romance. I like a guaranteed happy ending ;)

DFT: Do you have a favorite author or series?

Katie: I’m a huge fan of Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series and yes I realize I just said pnr is my favorite genre and I *think* the Fever series is considered more fantasy than anything (though it was categorized as paranormal romance at my local B&N), but the Fever series transcends all of that. Her world building is amazing and I’m very excited she has a new book in the same world coming out later this year.

DFT: If you weren’t a writer, what would your dream job be?

Katie: I can’t imagine being anything but a writer. I changed majors in college so many times because I was unsettled until I finally graduated with a degree in psychology (go figure). Then I couldn’t find a job I enjoyed after college until I discovered writing. With the exception of being a professional wine taster (which would rock!!), writing is my only dream job.

DFT: I want to thank you for taking the time to answer these questions.

Katie: Thank you so much for having me here!

One winner will receive a copy of Alpha Instinct by Katie Reus

Available on February 7, 2012 from Penguin/Signet

About the Book:

Fear has a scent. So does desire…

Ana Cordona has been a strong leader for the lupine shifters who survived after all the males and most of the females in her pack were mysteriously poisoned. As tough as she is, with no Alpha male, the pack is vulnerable to the devious shifter Taggart, who wants to claim both their ranch and Ana as his own. When Connor Armstrong comes back into her life, promising protection, it’s almost enough to make Ana forget how he walked out on her before—and reluctantly accept his offer to mate.

The minute Connor sees Ana again, it reawakens a raw hunger. He must have her for his bondmate—his wolf cries out for it. But his human side knows he must proceed with caution because of their complicated past. If he is to truly have her body and soul, he must go beyond his burning desire and win back her heart. Whatever it takes, he is determined not to leave her side again.

But Taggart and his rival pack are not their only enemies. A human element in town is targeting shifters. Their plan not only threatens Ana and Connor’s future, but the lives of the entire pack…

I really like all of the werewolf mythology. I think I like it better when anyone can be one and not just that you can be born as one. I think that that way it leaves the world alot more open to possibilities. I can’t wait to read this book it looks great.

Hmm werewolf mythology… I know this may sound a bit archaic now but I always enjoyed the idea of werewolves having a connection with the moon in some way (like changing at the full moon or mating or whatever).

That’s kind of a tough question. I really do love when a werewolf just instinctually knows when someone is their intended mate. And how, once mated, it’s for life. But I’ve read other takes on werewolves and it’s not always the same deal. The one thing that does always seem to be the norm is the “forever” part. Also, I like when they can shift whenever needed and not just during a full moon.

Thank you for this opportunity to win Alpha Instinct. I would really love to read it. :)
