We are so pleased to have Nalini Singh here today to talk about her very addictive Guild Hunters series. I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Singh last year at a conference. She did a lovely reading from Kiss of Snow, followed by a discussion and autograph signing. We all had such a great time. Her most recent release, Angels’ Flight is simply fantastic. We are also featuring this title in our UF/PNR Reading Challenge 2012. You can read our review of Archangel’s Blade here and Angels’ Flight here. Missed Kiss of Snow? Be sure to read our review here.
Thanks to Nalini, you also have a chance to win a copy of Archangel’s Blade. Comment below for a chance to win!
I’ve been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There’s no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.
I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated every month).
So far, I’ve worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer’s mill.
Nalini: We had a number of reader requests for all the Guild Hunter novellas to date to be available in a single volume, and since with Galen and Jessamy’s novella, we would have four novellas, it seemed like the best time.
DFT: I love the world you created with Angels/Vampires/Guild Hunters, what initially gave you the idea to create this world?
Nalini: I just saw this image in my mind one day, of an archangel in a tower above New York. Who was he? Why was he there? And that’s how it all began.
DFT: Who is your favorite character in the Guild Hunter series and why?
Nalini: I can honestly never pick a favorite – each character is unique, and so each appeals to me in a different way.
DFT: What is your favorite part of writing this series?
Nalini: I love so many things about it, including the fact that with Elena and Raphael’s relationship, we get to see what happens after the happy ever after. In many books, the heroine becoming immortal is the end of the story, but for them, it’s only the beginning, because now, Elena has to learn how to live as an immortal. More, we get to see how their relationship develops and changes.
DFT: Does plotting become easier or more challenging the further along into a series you get?
Nalini: It’s more a case of a different kind of plotting being required – at the start of a series, you’re introducing the world and the characters. As the series continues, it’s more about getting deeper into both.
DFT: What books/genres do you read when you have a chance? Do you have a favorite author or series?
Nalini: I’ve always read eclectically and I continue to do so. Everything from romance to thrillers to science fiction. Some of my favorite authors in the paranormal/urban fantasy genre are Jayne Castle, Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews and Meljean Brook.
DFT: I know it’s a little early, but is there anything you can tell readers about your next Guild Hunter book, Archangel’s Storm?
Nalini: All I can say is that it’s about Jason, Raphael’s mysterious spymaster. We’re going to get a chance to see into his past and learn the dark forces that shaped him. We’ll also be catching up with several other characters in the series.
DFT: I want to thank you for taking the time to answer these questions.
Available on September 6, 2011 from Penguin/Berkley Sensation
About the Book:
The severed head marked by a distinctive tattoo on its cheek should have been a Guild case, but dark instincts honed over hundreds of years of life compel the vampire Dmitri to take control. There is something twisted about this death, something that whispers of centuries long past…but Dmitri’s need to discover the truth is nothing to the vicious strength of his response to the hunter assigned to decipher the tattoo.
Savaged in a brutal attack that almost killed her, Honor is nowhere near ready to come face to face with the seductive vampire who is an archangel’s right hand, and who wears his cruelty as boldly as his lethal sensuality…the same vampire who has been her secret obsession since the day she was old enough to understand the inexplicable, violent emotions he aroused in her.
As desire turns into a dangerous compulsion that might destroy them both, it becomes clear the past will not stay buried. Something is hunting…and it will not stop until it brings a blood-soaked nightmare to life once more…
