We are so pleased to have Artist Arthur here today to talk about Temptation Rising, which hits shelves today. Temptation Rising is the first book in her new paranormal romance shapeshifter series from St. Martin’s Press. We are also featuring this title in our UF/PNR Reading Challenge 2012. You can read an excerpt from the book here.
Artist C. Arthur was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland where she currently resides with her husband and three children. An active imagination and a love for reading encouraged her to begin writing in high school and she hasn’t stopped since.
Working in the legal field for almost thirteen years now she’s seen lots of horrific things and longs for the safe haven reading a romance novel brings. Her debut novel Object of His Desire was written when a picture of an Italian villa sparked the idea of an African-American/Italian hero. Determined to bring a new edge to romance, she continues to develop intriguing plots, sensual love scenes, racy characters and fresh dialogue—thus keeping the readers on their toes!
During the course of her writing career Artist has won the YOUnity Guild’s Best New Drama and Romance Author Award in 2005/06 with her title Unconditional; the 2007 EMMA Award for Favorite Romantic Suspense with her title Love Me Carefully; and has also been included in the 2006 list of Romantic Times Reviewers Recommended Reads for Love Me Carefully. Most recently her title, Sing Your Pleasure won the 2010 EMMA Award for Book of the Year. She is represented by Christine Witthohn at Book Cents Literary Agency, LLC.
Artist loves to hear from her readers and can be reached moc.oohaynull@22ruhtraca.

DFT: Could you start things off by telling us a little about Temptation Rising?
A.C.: Temptation Rising is the first book in the Shadow Shifters series. This book introduces the Shadow Shifters and their tribes’ history. It follows Roman Reynolds, attorney in Washington D.C. who not only runs a prestigious law firm but also heads up a group of stateside Shadows in the effort to keep their secret. Kalina Harper is a detective who goes undercover to hopefully expose Roman and his connections to a South American drug cartel. Her investigation goes awry when she becomes the target of rogue Shadows looking to make their mark in the United States. It’s an action-packed story with a sensual backdrop.
DFT: Could you tell us about your main characters in Temptation Rising?
A.C.: Roman is the epitome of an alpha male. When he loves, he loves hard and protects with everything he has. But he wasn’t looking for Kalina and has some trouble accepting who and what she is in his life. Kalina’s a kick-ass heroine who is used to getting the bad guy at the end of the day. What she’s not used to—based on her past of being an orphan—is having someone desire and need her.
DFT: What initially gave you the idea to create the world of the Shadow Shifters?
A.C.: The shifters themselves came to me first. I’m not a cat lover by any stretch. In fact, I’m terribly afraid of all felines. But the jaguar had intriguing eyes and just looks like he rules wherever he lives. So I thought, what if they lived here, in the states, and had to rule on our terms? Wouldn’t that be fun!
DFT: Do you have a favorite scene or line in Temptation Rising?
A.C.: I love the scene that takes place in the Gungi, where Kalina and Rome both realize what they are to each other. It’s emotional and sensual and gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.
DFT: Do you have a particular writing process or ritual?
A.C.: None at all, and that’s probably terrible. I like to write in the morning, early morning when the family is still asleep. But I can write anywhere, at work, on vacation, in the car, wherever. Usually, especially when I’m close to deadline, that’s exactly what I do.
DFT: What influences and inspirations (both literary and non-literary) do you draw from while writing?
A.C.: Music. I love listening to music when I write. The lyrics just add to my creativity.
DFT: Which genre do you prefer to read? Do you have any favorite authors or series?
A.C.: My first and forever love is romance—paranormal and suspense being my favored sub-genres. Nora Roberts and Allison Brennan for suspense. Lora Leigh and J.R. Ward for paranormal.
DFT: If you weren’t a writer, what would your dream job be?
A.C.: My day job is a paralegal to a criminal court judge. I’m living my dream!
DFT: Are you working on any other projects that you can tell us about?
A.C.: Right now I’m writing book#3 in the Shadow Shifter series. I also write young adult paranormal under the name Artist Arthur, so I’m working on a new dystopian series in that genre.
DFT: What is your favorite paranormal creature?
A.C.: Shape shifters, of course.
DFT: I want to thank you for taking the time to answer these questions.
