Look Who’s Going to BEA: Holly Cupala

1. Can you introduce yourself to my readers?

I’m Holly Cupala, author of TELL ME A SECRET, which comes out June 22nd. It’s about a seventeen year old girl, Miranda, who has spent the last five years since her bad-girl sister’s mysterious death holding her family together. Just as she has everything she’s dreamed of – a ticket to escape her family, a friend to unlock her sister’s secrets, and a dreamy boyfriend to take her away, she has a terrible secret of her own, one that will shatter everything.

2. Are there any special events, panels or galleys you are looking forward to?

I’m hoping to catch Mitali Perkins, special speaker for the Children’s Book Breakfast, and other than that, I’m looking forward to connecting with my favorite authors, meeting new people, and soaking in the buzz and excitement. Plus attend special events (below).

3. Will this be your first time attending BEA or are you a veteran? Any advice for those who are going for the first time?

I’m a BEA newbie… If this conference is like some of the others I’ve attended, my advice would be to be brave and friendly—chat with other bloggers, authors, and book lovers. You never know who you will meet, and who might become a lifelong friend.

4. Will you be doing an autograph signing at the expo? Any other fun stuff on your agenda?

Definitely! I’ll be at the Teen Author Carnival on Monday night at the Jefferson Market Branch Library (425 Avenue of the Americas at 10th St.) on Monday night, 5-8pm – with swag, preview chapters, and prizes! I’ll be at BEA all day on Tuesday. Rumor has it there will be ARCs of TELL ME A SECRET at the HarperCollins booth, and I’m happy to sign them! Then on Tuesday evening, I’ll be at Books of Wonder (18 West 18th Street) with a bunch of other YA authors for a big book party.

5. What other projects are you working on that you would like to tell us about?

My editor just officially accepted my second YA novel, tentatively titled STREET CREED. It’s about a girl who runs away from her suburban home and lives with a band of homeless teens on the streets of Seattle—there are secrets, grit, and romance…and an amazing boy. It’s about what it means to love, and will hit the shelves in Fall 2011!

Thanks, Angela, for having me!

Synopsis (Product Description):

Tell me a secret, and I’ll tell you one…

In the five years since her bad-girl sister Xanda’s death, Miranda Mathison has wondered about the secret her sister took to the grave, and what really happened the night she died. Now, just as Miranda is on the cusp of her dreams—a best friend to unlock her sister’s world, a ticket to art school, and a boyfriend to fly her away from it all—Miranda has a secret all her own.

Then two lines on a pregnancy test confirm her worst fears. Stripped of her former life, Miranda must make a choice with tremendous consequences and finally face her sister’s demons and her own.

In this powerful debut novel, stunning new talent Holly Cupala illuminates the dark struggle of a girl who must let go of her past to find a way into her own future.
