Sure! Hello, my name is Lauren Oliver, and I like candlelit dinners and long walks on the beach…JUST KIDDING! I’m the author of Before I Fall, which was published in March of this year, and while I do like candlelit dinners, when I am on the beach I prefer just to lounge around reading trashy magazines while waiters bring me drinks served in coconut shells.
2. Are there any special events, panels or galleys you are looking forward to?
To be honest, my schedule has been so insane as I gear up for BEA, I haven’t had much of a chance to check out all the amazing people, books, and events BEA will feature. I’m sure once I get there, I’ll be running around like a sugar-deprived kid in a candy store, though.
3. Will this be your first time attending BEA or are you a veteran? Any advice for those who are going for the first time?
I have been to BEA before but never as an author. I went one year as an assistant editor, with some of the other editors from Penguin I worked with at the time. It was completely overwhelming. My advice for anyone attending for the first time? Tote bags, tote bags, tote bags. You will want to take home lots of books.
4. Will you be doing an autograph signing at the expo? Any other fun stuff on your agenda?
Yes! I will be signing copies of Before I Fall and—and this is the really exciting part—also signing ARC’s of my new book, DELIRIUM, which comes out in February 2011. Pretty much nobody outside of HarperCollins has seen Delirium yet, so it’s extremely exciting that it will be featured at BEA in this way.
5. What other projects are you working on that you would like to tell us about?
Well, so Delirium is finished and I’m really, really excited about it: it’s essentially a dystopian Romeo-and-Juliet story, about a world that has deemed love a contagious disease (and figured out how to cure it!). Delirium is the first book in a trilogy and I am currently working on its follow-up. I’m also working on a middle-grade book right now, so I have lots of different irons in the fire!
