I’m Maria V. Snyder and I write fantasy and science fiction books for both adults and young adult readers. I have 6 books published to date. The New York Times best-selling Study Series (Poison Study, Magic Study and Fire Study) is about a young woman who becomes a poison taster. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, I dreamed of chasing tornados, but lacked the skills to forecast their location. Writing, however, lets me control the weather. And my new Glass Series (Storm Glass, Sea Glass, and Spy Glass – coming 9-10) combines two out of the three things I enjoy, the weather and glass. The Glass books are about a glass magician who can trap magic inside her glass sculptures. Inside Out is my first YA book, and it’s about Trella’s harsh life in a metal world and how she refuses to accept the status quo. If anyone would like to read the first chapter of all my books, or to read a number of my short stories, you’re welcome to go to my website at www.MariaVSnyder.com for a free peek.
2. Are there any special events, panels or galleys you are looking forward to?
I always just love wandering around the floor and seeing what books are being featured. I will highlight a bunch of authors and books that I’d like to get, but I haven’t had a chance to look at the schedule yet.
3. Will this be your first time attending BEA or are you a veteran? Any advice for those who are going for the first time?
This will be my 4th BEA. And the best advice I can give to a first timer is to be choosy (I know all those books are irresistible!). Only pick up books you know you’ll read or you know a friend/family member will like. Otherwise you’ll drag around all these heavy books and get back to the hotel and ask yourself…Why!
4. Will you be doing an autograph signing at the expo? Any other fun stuff on your agenda?
I will be doing two signings – both in the Harlequin Booth #3922. On Wednesday, May 26th, I’ll be signing copies of Inside Out from noon to 12:45 p.m. And on Thursday, May 27th, I’ll be signing galleys of Spy Glass from 2:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Other fun stuff is having lunch with my editor and going to a party my publisher hosts.
5. What other projects are you working on that you would like to tell us about?
I’m currently working on Outside In, book 2 of the Insider Series. I can’t really divulge a plot as it would be a spoiler for Inside Out J I also have a few short stories in various anthologies. One of my favorite short stories, Mongrel has just been released in Running with the Pack, edited by Ekaterina Sedia. The anthology is a collection of werewolf stories in an urban setting.
Synopsis (Product Description):
Keep Your Head Down. Don’t Get Noticed. Or Else.
I’m Trella. I’m a scrub. One of thousands who work in the lower levels, keeping Inside clean for the Uppers. I do my job and try to avoid the Pop Cops. The Trava family who rules our world from their spacious Upper levels wants us to be docile and obedient, like sheep. To insure we behave, they send the Pop Cops to police us.
So what if I occasionally use the pipes to sneak around the Upper levels? Not like it’s all that dangerous–the only neck at risk is my own.
Until a lower level prophet claims a Gateway to Outside exists. And guess who he wants to steal into the Upper levels to get the proof? You’re right. Me. I alone know every single duct, pipe, corridor, shortcut, hole and ladder of Inside. It’s suicide plain and simple. But guess who can’t let a challenge like that go unanswered? Right again. Me.
I should have just said no…
