Look Who’s Going to BEA: Rachel Vincent

Can you introduce yourself to my readers?

I’m Rachel Vincent, author of the young adult Soul Screamers series and the adult Shifters series, as well as the forthcoming Undone series.

Can you introduce us to the world that you have created?

Well, there are several of them. My Soul Screamers world is about a teenage bean sidhe (banshee) fighting grim reapers, nightmares, hellions, and assorted other beings while also dealing with high school, past trauma, and conflicted first love. I have so much fun writing these books! They’re dark (especially from the third book on) and sometimes funny, and I think about the characters and their complicated lives even when I’m supposed to be writing other things. The world keeps pulling me in.

On the adult side of things, I just finished up my Shifter series, which is a dark, violent shapeshifter world, and I’m about to launch my new adult series, Unbound, which is set in a version of our world where promises have true power. The written and spoken word can be “sealed,” binding someone to his or her agreements literally. This world is also very dark and violent and the predominant themes are the loss of free will and the things we will do (some very bad) to protect those we love.

What should readers know before stepping into your world?

My YA books are appropriate for fourteen and up, though the themes get more mature as the series progresses. I don’t believe in presenting easy choices, so every time a character chooses the lesser of two evils, he or she is setting something even worse in motion. And in the Soul Screamers world, consequences are permanent. You can’t undo what’s been done.

My adult books are very gritty and bloody, and I don’t pull punches. Nor do I guarantee everyone’s survival. I favor realistic endings over shiny happy ones. ;)

Are there any special events, panels or galleys you are looking forward to?

I haven’t really looked at the program yet, but I’m sure I’ll want some of everything. ;)

Will this be your first time attending BEA or are you a veteran?  Any advice for those who are going for the first time?

This’ll be my third consecutive year at BEA. My advice? Get in line early for ARCs. It gets crazy.

Will you be doing an autograph signing at the expo? Any other fun stuff on your agenda?

I will be signing ARCs of IF I DIE (Soul Screamers 5) and ARCs of BLOOD BOUND (Unbound book 1), both on Tuesday, both at the Harlequin booth.

What other projects are you working on that you would like to tell us about?

Right now, I’m working on the rough draft of the second Unbound book as well as a third free novella set in the Soul Screamers world.
