Blog Tour & Giveaway: Blackhearts by Nicole Castroman

nicole Castroman author photoI am so excited to be apart of the blog tour for Blackhearts by Nicole Castroman. This is the story of Edward Teach, the man that became the infamous Blackbeard. Personally, I have a slight obsession with pirates so when I saw the cover reveal and synopsis for this story months ago I just knew I had to read it! Luckily I got an early copy and guys it is AMAZING!!! I literally picked it up and stayed up until the wee hours of the night finishing it because it was that good. If you want to read my full review click here (but rest assured it is just me flailing about how much you need to read this)!!! Blackhearts hits shelves today so make sure to pick up a copy!

For my stop today I was supposed to come up with a few guest post ideas and Nicole would pick one to answer. I came up with five ideas and to my surprise and delight Nicole decided to answer four of the topics I suggested. So my post turned into more of an interview but it is awesome and I think you guys are going to love it (there is a hot picture of Edward)! Also, at the end of the post there is a fantastic giveaway for 1 finished copy of Blackhearts!

About Nicole:

Nicole was lucky enough to come with her very own best friend…she has a twin sister who can read her mind and finish her sentences for her.

At the age of 13, she went to Europe for the first time and it changed her life. She loves learning about different people, languages and cultures and speaks fluent German. She knows enough Spanish to get herself into trouble and can still read the Cyrillic alphabet from when she studied Russian.

She received her B.A. from Brigham Young University and has lived in Germany, Austria and two different places called Georgia. One is located on the Black Sea. The other is the state of Georgia where she now lives with her handsome husband and two beautiful children who continue to amaze her.

Blackhearts Blog Tour

DFT: I imagine you had to do a fair amount of research to write Blackhearts and I would love to know more about the original Blackbeard. What were some unique things you learned about him while you were doing your research?

Nicole: I learned that Blackbeard most likely came from a wealthy family, because he could read and write. At the time, only the well-to-do were educated.

Despite all of the theories and tales about him, there is no real evidence that he ever killed anyone, until the last battle that ultimately took his life. Unlike other pirates at the time, he didn’t torture or murder his victims. He didn’t have to resort to violence, when people gave him what he wanted. Blackbeard built up his persona. He created a demonic appearance by attaching burning hemp ropes beneath his hat. He was also large in stature, much larger than most men at the time. Can you imagine if you saw some large figure coming at you, with smoke wafting around him? I’d probably hand over my jewelry or gold as well.

Some reports say that he was quite charismatic. I believe that, especially because out of all the pirates, Blackbeard is the most notorious. He’s the one most people think of when they think of actual swashbucklers.

The name of his flag ship was the Queen Anne’s Revenge.

DFT: I love the fashion you featured in your book. That time era had some interesting outfits and depending on your station it determined what you wore. Both Anne and Edward dress in different to fit stations throughout the story. Can you show us pictures of…

Anne as a maid:

Anne as a daughter of a wealthy merchant:

Edward as a sailor:

Nicole: JUST KIDDING!! This is not Teach as a sailor. I picture an outfit more like this:

Edward Sailor 2

Edward as the son of a wealthy merchant:

DFT: I have a slight obsession with pirates and there are so many legends and stories that feature pirates. Besides Blackbeard what are some of your favorite pirate legends/stories?

Nicole: I think William Kidd is a fascinating character. He started out as a privateer with permission from the British crown to seize ships. At some point, the government changed their mind, charged him with piracy and had him hanged. Some evidence that could have proven he was innocent went missing at the time of his trial, only to show up years later. I actually have another book about this, but it needs some work.

DFT: When writing a book there are many edits and sadly stuff has to get deleted. Could you share a deleted scene with us that you were sad to see go?

Nicole: Honestly, I loved revising BLACKHEARTS. For the most part, it stayed the same as when I first drafted it. About ¾ of the way through, I did change some chapters, but I LOVE the changes I made. I don’t have any deleted scenes that I was sad to see go.

About this Book:

Blackbeard the pirate was known for striking fear in the hearts of the bravest of sailors. But once he was just a young man who dreamed of leaving his rigid life behind to chase adventure in faraway lands. Nothing could stop him—until he met the one girl who would change everything.

Edward “Teach” Drummond, son of one of Bristol’s richest merchants, has just returned from a year-long journey on the high seas to find his life in shambles. Betrothed to a girl he doesn’t love and sick of the high society he was born into, Teach dreams only of returning to the vast ocean he’d begun to call home. There’s just one problem: convincing his father to let him leave and never come back.

Following her parents’ deaths, Anne Barrett is left penniless and soon to be homeless. Though she’s barely worked a day in her life, Anne is forced to take a job as a maid in the home of Master Drummond. Lonely days stretch into weeks, and Anne longs for escape. How will she ever realize her dream of sailing to Curaçao—where her mother was born—when she’s stuck in England?

From the moment Teach and Anne meet, they set the world ablaze. Drawn to each other, they’re trapped by society and their own circumstances. Faced with an impossible choice, they must decide to chase their dreams and go, or follow their hearts and stay.

I am really surprised that there is no real evidence of Blackbeard killing many, and the description you give of how he built up his persona really amused me. Very ingenious of the man.
