Welcome to the start of the blog tour for Dawn Study by Maria V. Snyder. I am a HUGE fan of the Study Series and being able to interview one of my all time favorite heroines is amazing. Dawn Study is the 6th novel in the series and it will be releasing on January 31, 2017! If you haven’t started reading this epic high fantasy you really should start now. You can check out my review for Poison Study here and my review for the rest of the series should be posting soon!
Down below you will get to see my interview with Yalena and there is also a fantastic giveaway for 10 finished copies of Dawn Study! There will be both U.S. and International winners!
Maria V. Snyder changed from being a meteorologist to a novelist in 1995, when she began writing to keep her sanity while raising two children. Since then, she has published numerous freelance articles in magazines and newspapers, and teaches fiction-writing classes at the local college and area libraries. The classes give her the wonderful opportunity to encourage fellow writers, and to keep improving her craft.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Maria always had a fascination with big storms. Dreaming of chasing tornados, Maria earned a bachelors of science degree in meteorology at Penn State University. But she discovered, much to her chagrin, that forecasting the weather wasn’t one of her skills. In order to chase tornados you had to predict where they might form. Creating fantasy worlds where she has complete control of the weather was more agreeable to her.
Maria’s research on food-tasting methods with an expert chocolate taster, her husband, turned out to be a delicious bonus while writing Poison Study.
Maria has a brown belt in Isshinryu Karate, and enjoys playing volleyball and the cello. Traveling in general and via cruise ship in particular are her biggest distractions from writing. Maria has traveled to Belize, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean and through the Panama Canal.
Maria lives with her husband, son, daughter and yellow lab, Hazelnut, in Pennsylvania where she is at work on more LUNA novels. She is also pursuing a master’s degree in writing popular fiction from Seton Hill University.

Interview with Yalena
Dark Faerie Tales: Hi Yelena! Thank you so much for agreeing to meet with us today. To start things off will you introduce yourself so those of us who haven’t read your story yet will get a taste of your story?
Yelena: Thank you for inviting me! Ha! “A taste of your story” is very clever since you know that I started out by working for the Commander of Ixia as his food taster. It was either that or the noose, so I figured tasting foods for poisons might let me live long enough to figure a way out of my situation. Then my life became even more complicated when I found out I had magic—a crime in Ixia, and I started falling in love with Valek, the Commander’s security chief. I managed to discover a way to not be killed and was exiled to Sitia to learn how to use my magic. Of course things weren’t all roses and sunshine in Sitia and I had to deal with a magical serial killer, a Master Magician who hated me, a long lost brother who also hated me, and a very…quirky family that lived in the trees. All the while, Valek and I stayed together and we’re still dealing with various problems, including the Commander’s recent decision to invade Sitia, which we’re hoping to stop, but, to tell you the truth, it isn’t looking good for us.
DFT: You have some very unique and special magical abilities at your disposal and you have been able to do some amazing things in your life. I’m curious what is your favorite thing about your magic and if you could have any other magical power what would it be?
Yelena: Well, I had those magical abilities and I’m hoping to get them back sooner rather than later as they would come in handy as we’re trying to stop a war. When I had my magic, I really loved helping others either by healing them or guiding their souls to find peace in the sky. I also loved communicating with my horse Kiki! I really miss “talking” to her and would love to hear her again – even if it’s just some cryptic horse advice. If I get my magic back, I swear I’ll never complain about her advice ever again!
DFT: A year ago I had the opportunity to interview your heart mate Valek and I thought it would be fun to ask you some of the same questions I asked him! I know you two have been together a long time now, but when was the first moment you found yourself falling in love with Valek?
Yelena: That’s a hard one to pin down. I started out being terrified of the man, but as we worked together, I realized he wasn’t as scary as he likes you to believe. And then when Dilana made that comment about Valek being sweet on me, I had to acknowledge that I had a crush on him. After I drank a little too much brandy for the Commander’s meeting, I finally relaxed enough to admit I had deeper feelings for him. I thought he wasn’t interested, but then we spent a few nights in a dungeon together and he confessed his love. Yeah, I know not the most romantic of places, but I did think I was going to die and we wouldn’t get another chance.
DFT: Valek and you have a very interesting story and you have now been together for many years. We as the readers have been with you for much of your journey together and we all have our favorite Valek/Yelena moments, but what is your favorite memory with Valek?
Yelena: Well, this is a spoiler for anyone who hasn’t read the books, so if that’s you skip to the next question before you read anymore! My favorite memory is when he asked me to marry him! He showed me the true depth of his feelings for me and how I was more important than the Commander. Again not the most conventional of proposals, but I’ve learned our lives will never fit the norm and we have to seize those moments when they come because we might not get another chance.
DFT: Valek is an amazing man and there are so many things I love about him! What is your favorite physical attribute of his and what do you think is his best quality?
Yelena: His best quality is his loyalty and how he will do anything, including risking his own life, to protect the people he loves. My favorite physical attribute is his sapphire-blue eyes! The intense way he gazes at me as if nobody else in the world exists, just sets my heart on fire. And the rest of me too!
DFT: You have come a long way since you were a poison taster and I know you have learned much throughout your journey. If you could share one piece of advice to all of us what would it be?
Yelena: Don’t give up! Don’t give up hope and don’t give up your efforts to overcome your problems. There is always a solution and it’s just a matter of using persistence and determination to find that solution.
DFT: I am so sad to know that your story has come to an end but I’m curious if you know what Maria is currently working on or what she has in store for us next?
Yelena: I believe Maria is working on a science fiction story for young adults. She’s waiting to hear back from publishers about when and if it might be available. There’s also another fantasy series she has sketched out and hopes to write as well.
Quick Fire Questions:
Favorite Weapon? My bo staff.
Favorite food? Sweet cakes.
Favorite book? I’ve no idea! I haven’t had much time to read and all the books I’ve read tend to deal with espionage, spying, fighting, and reading body language!
Favorite season? The cold season! Having grown up in Ixia, Sitia is too hot for me most of the year. Besides, cuddling with Valek under a warm blanket in front of a roaring fire is one of my favorite things to do!

About this Book:
New York Times bestselling author Maria V. Snyder brings her Poison Study series to its exhilarating conclusion.
Despite the odds, Yelena and Valek have forged an irrevocable bond and a family that transcends borders. Now, when their two homelands stand on the brink of war, they must fight with magic and cunning to thwart an Ixian plot to invade Sitia.
Yelena seeks to break the hold of the insidious Theobroma that destroys a person’s resistance to magical persuasion. But the Cartel is determined to keep influential citizens and Sitian diplomats in thrall and Yelena at bay. With every bounty hunter after her, Yelena is forced to make a dangerous deal.
With might and magic, Valek peels back the layers of betrayal surrounding the Commander. At its rotten core lies a powerful magician and his latest discovery. The fate of all rests upon two unlikely weapons. One may turn the tide. The other could spell the end of everything.”
