Flame in the Mist Tour Banner

Dark Faerie Tales: First up, can you tell us a little bit about Flame in the Mist and where you got the inspiration to write it?

Renée: Absolutely! FLAME IN THE MIST is the story of Mariko, a girl who barely escapes an assassination attempt, then decides to disguise herself as a boy to infiltrate the notorious band of ninja that tried to kill her and learn why they would do it. My inspiration was largely gender-bending stories I loved as a child: Tamora Pierce’s Song of the Lioness, Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, and—of course—Mulan.

DFT: Mariko is a kick butt heroine (which is my favorite kind) and I love that she takes her destiny into her own hands!!! Out of all of her amazing qualities, which one do you think is her most valuable asset?

Renée: Thank you so much! I would definitely say her intellect is her most valuable asset.

DFT: Flame in the Mist is set in feudal Japan and I think that is just fascinating! What made you decide to set your book during that time and did you have to do much research?

Renée: I love feudal Japan, too! I decided to set my book during that time period because I knew I wanted to bring an East Asian world to life. As a child of mixed race, I didn’t see myself much in books, so it was important to bring different cultures into play in my writing. I absolutely did lots of research—especially when it came to the food!

DFT: If you can without spoiling anything, will you share your favorite line/passage that you wrote in the book?

Renée: “To me, you are magic.”

DFT: This is your second series and I’m curious to know if you enjoyed writing one series more than the other?

Renée: I love them both, for different reasons. Both heroines are strong in multifaceted ways, and these are exactly the types of protagonists I love most. I believe strength of the heart and strength of the mind are just as important as knowing how to wield a sword!

DFT: Luckily this is just the first book in the series, so we will be getting more from this wonderful world! Can you give us any hints as to what will happen in the next book? Any themes you can share?

Renée: I would definitely say the idea of duality is even further explored in the sequel. Also I’m excited to write even more fight scenes and have Mariko invent even more impressive weapons!

Flame in the Mist

Available May 16, 2017 from G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers/Penguin

About this Book:

The daughter of a prominent samurai, Mariko has long known her place—she may be an accomplished alchemist, whose cunning rivals that of her brother Kenshin, but because she is not a boy, her future has always been out of her hands. At just seventeen years old, Mariko is promised to Minamoto Raiden, the son of the emperor’s favorite consort—a political marriage that will elevate her family’s standing. But en route to the imperial city of Inako, Mariko narrowly escapes a bloody ambush by a dangerous gang of bandits known as the Black Clan, who she learns has been hired to kill her before she reaches the palace.

Dressed as a peasant boy, Mariko sets out to infiltrate the ranks of the Black Clan, determined to track down the person responsible for the target on her back. But she’s quickly captured and taken to the Black Clan’s secret hideout, where she meets their leader, the rebel ronin Takeda Ranmaru, and his second-in-command, his best friend Okami. Still believing her to be a boy, Ranmaru and Okami eventually warm to Mariko, impressed by her intellect and ingenuity. As Mariko gets closer to the Black Clan, she uncovers a dark history of secrets, of betrayal and murder, which will force her to question everything she’s ever known.

It has been gratifying to find more stories with settings in Japan and China. I have always been fascinated by those countries.

Great interview. It is nice to have more fantasy novels that are not Eurocentric. I am really excited about Flame in the Mist.
