Interview with Eight

Dark Faerie Tales: For all of our lovely readers who havent had the immense pleasure of meeting you yet can you introduce yourself and give us a short synopsis of what happened in Compulsion?

Eight: Hello, ladies. It’s great to get to meet you today, and I appreciate the chance to stop by and chat. I brought along some sweet tea! Man, these are some fantastic questions.

My name is Eight Beaufort, well, technically Charles Beaufort the Eighth, although sometimes I feel a bit like just a number on my family tree and not someone my family sees as an individual. I’m a baseball player, and a sailor, and I struggle a little bit with dyslexia. Mostly, I guess you ought to know that I have the family gift for knowing what people want most, and the gift also makes me want to give it to them. That can be inconvenient. And painful.

In Compulsion, I met Barrie Watson, whose mother had run away from Watson’s Landing across the river from Beaufort Hall before Barrie was born. Barrie showed up here knowing nothing about the island or the magic that haunts this place, and that got her into trouble. She uncovered two murders and a drug smuggling operation, and nearly got herself killed in the process. Watching her struggle through all that, seeing who she is underneath, seeing how brave she is and how much she wants to do the right thing and believe in people, made me fall in love with her.

DFT: You have a very unique gift where you can feel whatever a person wants most.  I know at times the gift can feel like a curse, but I imagine it has had its funny moments as well.  What is one of the funniest or weirdest things someone has wanted?

Eight: Pregnant women can get pretty weird about food combinations, and the time Carolyn Moss was ready to kill for shrimp and grits with chocolate sauce made me want to give up eating for about a week. School gets strange, especially on the first day back from summer break where the girls are all checking out what the other girls are wearing. The time Tonya Davies and Erin Garmon showed up wearing the same thing, Erin got really specific about how she wanted to tear the dress off Tonya, rip it to shreds and stuff it down the third toilet in the girls’ bathroom. Not sure why it had to be the third toiled and not the second one, or the first, or the fifth, but she was very emphatic about what she wanted.

DFT: You relationship with your father is difficult. You dont see eye to eye on most things and he treats you like you are still a child that doesnt know how to make good decisions.  Was there ever a time when you got along with your dad?

Eight: Dad and I do get along sometimes, but he’s always been a little rocky. Especially since my mama died. At the same time, I know he’s proud of me when I play baseball or when we’re meeting folks in town. The problem is that what I want always seems to make him uncomfortable, because he doesn’t think I’m making smart decisions.

DFT: You have a sweet younger sister that you adore and she adores you in return.  What is one of your favorite childhood memories of you and Kate?

Eight: Frogface went through a really hard time when our mama died. I guess we both did. I locked myself in the closet to try to shut things out, and Kate got lonely and scared on her own. She used to crawl into the closet and sit beside me, not interrupting my thinking, just sitting there with her thumb in her mouth and her legs stretched out beside mine. I couldn’t see her in the dark, but that’s where she first started practicing trying to touch her nose with her tongue—that’s something that both Dad and I can do, and because Kate can’t do it, she decided that meant she couldn’t be related to us.

DFT: Because of your dyslexia, learning was always a struggle.  What have you done to try and cope with your disability? What is some advice you can give others that struggle with the same problem?

Eight: I have to learn the whole word because I have a really hard time sounding new words out. Researching something new is hard. I also need time to get an overview of what I’m learning, and then reinforce that with a follow-up or even better, with something hands on to help me understand and remember. I basically have to do a lot of memorizing and sight learning and stay organized. I hear there are some new programs that could maybe help me. I’ve been a little reluctant to admit how much of a problem this is for me, so I just try to gut it out. Maybe I should look into getting a bit more help.

DFT: I cant help but ask a few questions about Barrie!!! I absolutely love her and I think she is such a sweetheart.  What was your impression of her the first time you saw her?

Eight: She was trying to keep me and Dad from figuring out that her aunt Pru had had a meltdown and she was worried that we were going to think that Pru was crazy. She didn’t know anything about the situation that had made Pru cry, and she’d barely even met Pru at that point in time, but she was already wanting to help her. That’s Barrie. She sees the good in everyone, and she leads with her heart. She wants to help everyone. That gets her into trouble, but it makes it impossible not to love her.

DFT: I know that you two havent know each other very long, but I think your romance is pretty epic ?!!!! Out of all your moments spent with Barrie which one is your favorite?

Eight: We’ve had a few tense moments, and I wanted to fix things between us. She had told me she had too many things she had never done, and I told her to make a list and we would do them all. But that all got shuffled under the rug by events, so she never made the list at all. I wanted to show her that I was thinking about her and that there would be good times as well as the bad ones, so I figured she’d never swung in a tire swing. I brought a tire over to Watson’s Landing, and we set it up in the middle of then night. Then we danced together in the rain. Her face under that red umbrella, her hair curling in the damp, and the way she smiled up at me . . . if I’d had any doubt she was magic before that moment, let’s just say that changed my mind.

DFT: The ending of Persuasion left me just a little bit heartbroken (ok Im lying it left me extremely heartbroken). Can you give us any clues as to what is going to happen in the next book?

Eight: I need some time to fix things with my own issues with the Beaufort magic and what that’s going to mean for me and for Barrie, for what it means for us as a couple. I’m pretty sure that if there’s a way to work things out, Barrie and I can find it. Right now though, I don’t have a clue.

About this Book:

Beautiful Creatures meets The Raven Boys in the spellbinding second novel in the Heirs of Watson Island trilogy that “skillfully blends rich magic and folklore with adventure, sweeping romance, and hidden treasure” (Publishers Weekly, on Compulsion).

Grieving the death of her godfather and haunted by her cousin Cassie’s betrayal, Barrie returns from a trip to San Francisco to find the Watson plantation under siege. Ghost-hunters hope to glimpse the ancient spirit who sets the river on fire each night, and reporters chase rumors of a stolen shipment of Civil War gold that may be hidden at Colesworth Place. The chaos turns dangerous as Cassie hires a team of archeologists to excavate beneath the mansion ruins. Because more is buried there than treasure.

A stranger filled with magic arrives at Watson’s Landing claiming that the key to the Watson and Beaufort gifts—and the Colesworth curse—also lies beneath the mansion. With a mix of threats and promises, the man convinces Barrie and Cassie to cast a spell there at midnight. But what he conjures may have deadly consequences.

While Barrie struggles to make sense of the escalating peril and her growing and forbidden feelings for Eight Beaufort, it’s impossible to know whom to trust and what to fight for—Eight or herself. Millions of dollars and the fate of the founding families is at stake. Now Barrie must choose between what she feels deep in her heart and what will keep Watson’s Landing safe in this stunning addition to a series filled with “decadent settings, mysterious magic, and family histories rife with debauchery” (Kirkus Reviews, on Compulsion).
