Evelyn Skye head shot high resAbout Evelyn Skye

Evelyn Skye was once offered a job by the C.I.A., she not-so-secretly wishes she was on “So You Think You Can Dance,” and if you challenge her to a pizza-eating contest, she guarantees she will win. When she isn’t writing, Evelyn can be found chasing her daughter on the playground or sitting on the couch, immersed in a good book and eating way too many cookies. THE CROWN’S GAME is her first novel.

Vika, Nikolai and Pasha on OK Cupid

I have done my share of time on dating sites, and I began to wonder, what would Vika, Nikolai, and Pasha’s profiles look like if they were on OK Cupid?

So I decided to find out.

Your self-summary

I am a 16-year-old enchantress. I can conjure a snow storm with the snap of my fingers and heal wounded animals’ bones.

What are you doing with your life?

Competing to become the tsar’s Imperial Enchanter. What are you doing with yours?

I’m really good at:

Commanding the elements. And I am probably better at everything than you are. (I’m sorry, were you looking for a modest girl? Keep looking.)

The six things I could never live without:

Birch woods

I spend a lot of time thinking about:

How to destroy the other enchanter

On a typical Friday night I’m:

Working on how to evanesce

You should message me if:

You can keep up with an enchantress. (I doubt you can.)

Your self-summary

I am, first and foremost, a gentleman. I am also an enchanter who revels in the mechanical aspects of the world.

What are you doing with your life?

Unfortunately, figuring out how to kill another enchanter.

I’m really good at:

Clocks! I love taking them apart and re-using the parts to invent new things. And bridges. I love studying bridges, and I wish I had the space to conjure one. Perhaps I’ll just make one appear across the Neva River?

The six things I could never live without:

Pasha, my best friend

Renata, my other best friend

Locks on my door

My top hat (not to mention all the clothes I tailored myself)

I spend a lot of time thinking about:

Why the world is the way it is.

On a typical Friday night I’m:

At a ball at a nobleman’s house, dancing with the debutantes and letting Galina show me off as her “charitable project,” since she took me in from the Kazakh steppe.

You should message me if:

You don’t mind that I might be dead by tomorrow.

Your self-summary

I am, for better or for worse, the tsesarevich—crown prince—of Russia.

What are you doing with your life?

I’m ostensibly training to be tsar, but mostly, I’m sneaking out of the Winter Palace whenever I can to go hunting or causing other shenanigans with my best friend, Nikolai.

I’m really good at:

Archery, fencing, horseback riding, slipping out of the palace in disguise.

The six things I could never live without:

My sister

My mother

My hidden wardrobe of costumes

Fresh air

Evenings at The Magpie and The Fox (a tavern) with Nikolai

I spend a lot of time thinking about:

Whether I’ll be a good tsar someday

On a typical Friday night I’m:

Playing cards at a Count’s house, or dancing at a ball at a Baron’s, or supping with a prince or ambassador from abroad.

You should message me if:

You’re a political or aristocratic match whom my mother, the tsarina, approves.

The Crown's Game

Available May 17, 2016 by Balzer + Bray

About this Book:

Vika Andreyeva can summon the snow and turn ash into gold. Nikolai Karimov can see through walls and conjure bridges out of thin air. They are enchanters—the only two in Russia—and with the Ottoman Empire and the Kazakhs threatening, the Tsar needs a powerful enchanter by his side.

And so he initiates the Crown’s Game, an ancient duel of magical skill—the greatest test an enchanter will ever know. The victor becomes the Imperial Enchanter and the Tsar’s most respected adviser. The defeated is sentenced to death.

Raised on tiny Ovchinin Island her whole life, Vika is eager for the chance to show off her talent in the grand capital of Saint Petersburg. But can she kill another enchanter—even when his magic calls to her like nothing else ever has?

For Nikolai, an orphan, the Crown’s Game is the chance of a lifetime. But his deadly opponent is a force to be reckoned with—beautiful, whip smart, imaginative—and he can’t stop thinking about her.

And when Pasha, Nikolai’s best friend and heir to the throne, also starts to fall for the mysterious enchantress, Nikolai must defeat the girl they both love… or be killed himself.

As long-buried secrets emerge, threatening the future of the empire, it becomes dangerously clear… the Crown’s Game is not one to lose.
