Our introduction comes today from Jessie. She recently answered our call for new book reviewers and we are excited to have her join Dark Faerie Tales. Jessie offers her reading expertise and such wonderful insight to her reviews. Jessie is going to do reviews for us and you can read some of her lovely work after this post. Please officially welcome Jessie to the team!
Hello! My name is Jessie and I live in Idaho with my husband and two, soon to be three little boys! My husband works a ton and I’m super grateful for that, it allows me the opportunity to hang out with my boys all day. My family is everything to me, but needless to say, I get a little starved for entertainment sometimes, and the late nights with kiddos and babies just seem less tiring with book, whether it’s a new adventure or an old favorite. I’m just not a huge television fan, I’d much rather read a good book! I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Community Health Education, with a minor in English. I have always enjoyed reading, and I love the challenge of writing. Writing about a book just makes you delve deeper than you would otherwise, and see the book in a different way. So I think writing reviews will be a great way to keep my brain happy and occupied.
I read to escape, and if the book I’m reading isn’t more exciting or happier than my life, than I have a harder time with it. I like happy endings, and I can do creepy, but I’m not a huge fan of scary. Just a warning, that might reflect in my reviews. I will give most books a chance, but my favorites are happy, and not too predictable. It’s been an interesting journey already to explore some different genres and to review books that I might normally never even hear about or consider. I’m a huge nerd, especially when it comes to parenting, and I actually read more non-fiction than I do fiction. There’s nothing like being a mom to make you thirst for more answers. It has been fun to get back into the fiction world, but I’m a little pickier about substance now, even in the fiction world. I get really into the background behind the storyline, the author, and even how the book fits together. I really appreciate it when an author really has his or her story figured out, and it could really be happening, even if it has supernatural or fictional elements. I’m not as patient when an author relies on a good premise, but misses the details. I guess in a nutshell, my reviews might tend to lean towards the critical side, even if I quite enjoyed a book.
I’m a girly-girl, and my favorite color is pink. I collect pink antiques, and my book collecting is similar. I really appreciate the classics, and I think it’s pretty fun when an author can include some piece of history in his or her writing, and really tie it together with something new and exciting. My favorite book of all time is Pride and Prejudice, I think it just represents my book personality through and through. I love a book with a little romance, but I like my romance old school, I’m not into anything too vulgar. Another favorite author of mine is Orson Scott Card, mostly because he is brilliant. Although I naturally gravitate toward a book that’s less manly, he really creates an atmosphere and suspense. So action and old school romance are totally my things. I don’t do boring.
I’m really excited to be a part of Dark Faerie Tales. I was introduced to it by my awesome sister-in-law Bridget, and she has loved reviewing for the blog so much that I just had to take advantage of an opening! So that’s me. I would love to have any critical feedback from anyone regarding my reviews. That’s really what I’m about and really why I am taking on this new adventure, to reignite my reading and writing skills and to improve, or at least keep them alive. I hope that my reviews will help our followers make accurate decisions about what book they will pick up next! Happy reading!
