New Dark Faerie Tales Team Member: Meet Kaitlin

November 6th, 2013 Kristie Posted in Dark Faerie Tales Team Comments Off on New Dark Faerie Tales Team Member: Meet Kaitlin

Dark Faerie Tales is excited about adding another new reviewer to our team. Today’s introduction comes from Kaitlin who recently answered our call for new book reviewers. Kaitlin offers her reading expertise and such wonderful insight to her reviews.  Kaitlin is going to do reviews for us and you can read some of her lovely work after this post. Please join us in welcoming Kaitlin to the team!

Juggling all-star cheerleading, honors classes, and the normal social agenda, I still find time to read. In the car, before bed, you name it! I adore romances and contemporaries, but still enjoy the good dystopian or high fantasy. It’s not hard to devour the written word, and I also love to write. Reading transcends our sometimes boring modern day, taking one to unimaginable places and vivid emotion.

Some of my favorite authors are A. G. Howard, J. K. Rowling, Kiera Cass, Christopher Paoloni, and of course many more! I’m so excited to join the talented gang over at Dark Faerie Tales, and I feel incredibly lucky to be able to share the books I enjoy with others. I look forward to doing many reviews in the future!

New Dark Faerie Tales Team Member: Meet Stephanie

November 4th, 2013 Kristie Posted in Dark Faerie Tales Team 2 Comments »

A few months ago we put out a call for reviewers and several wonderful people applied. Today’s introduction comes from Stephanie.  She recently answered our call for new book reviewers and we are excited to have her join Dark Faerie Tales.  Stephanie offers her reading expertise and such wonderful insight to her reviews.  Stephanie is going to do reviews for us and you can read some of her lovely work after this post. Please officially welcome Stephanie to the team!

My name’s Stephanie, and I live in Central Illinois with my husband and three cats (or zoo as some friends have been known to call it). I’m a full-time research assistant, spending my days proofreading research articles and doing other reference work, pretty much the perfect job for an introverted English major like myself. I love coming home and curling up on the couch to read something that doesn’t involve statistics and scientific vocabulary! If I’m not reading, you’ll most likely find me playing video games or watching movies.

I’ve always loved to read. I remember going to the library every week when I was in fourth grade, checking out 4 or 5 Nancy Drew books at a time. It wasn’t long before I had read their entire collection. Then in junior high, I discovered Stephen King and officially fell in love with books my family lovingly describes as “weird.” Shortly after that, I discovered urban fantasy with L.J. Smith’s Forbidden Game trilogy and never looked back. While I do read the occasional historical or contemporary romance, my favorite genres by far are paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and dystopian.

My favorite authors at the moment (it constantly changes) are Kim Harrison, Ilona Andrews, and Seanan McGuire. I think everything they write is pure gold! I’m very excited about having this opportunity to write reviews for Dark Faerie Tales. I’m looking forward to sharing my thoughts on many different books with everyone!

New Dark Faerie Tales Team Member: Meet Jessie

October 22nd, 2013 Kristie Posted in Dark Faerie Tales Team Comments Off on New Dark Faerie Tales Team Member: Meet Jessie

Our introduction comes today from Jessie.  She recently answered our call for new book reviewers and we are excited to have her join Dark Faerie Tales.  Jessie offers her reading expertise and such wonderful insight to her reviews.  Jessie is going to do reviews for us and you can read some of her lovely work after this post. Please officially welcome Jessie to the team!

Hello! My name is Jessie and I live in Idaho with my husband and two, soon to be three little boys! My husband works a ton and I’m super grateful for that, it allows me the opportunity to hang out with my boys all day. My family is everything to me, but needless to say, I get a little starved for entertainment sometimes, and the late nights with kiddos and babies just seem less tiring with book, whether it’s a new adventure or an old favorite. I’m just not a huge television fan, I’d much rather read a good book! I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Community Health Education, with a minor in English. I have always enjoyed reading, and I love the challenge of writing. Writing about a book just makes you delve deeper than you would otherwise, and see the book in a different way. So I think writing reviews will be a great way to keep my brain happy and occupied.

I read to escape, and if the book I’m reading isn’t more exciting or happier than my life, than I have a harder time with it. I like happy endings, and I can do creepy, but I’m not a huge fan of scary. Just a warning, that might reflect in my reviews. I will give most books a chance, but my favorites are happy, and not too predictable. It’s been an interesting journey already to explore some different genres and to review books that I might normally never even hear about or consider. I’m a huge nerd, especially when it comes to parenting, and I actually read more non-fiction than I do fiction. There’s nothing like being a mom to make you thirst for more answers. It has been fun to get back into the fiction world, but I’m a little pickier about substance now, even in the fiction world. I get really into the background behind the storyline, the author, and even how the book fits together. I really appreciate it when an author really has his or her story figured out, and it could really be happening, even if it has supernatural or fictional elements. I’m not as patient when an author relies on a good premise, but misses the details. I guess in a nutshell, my reviews might tend to lean towards the critical side, even if I quite enjoyed a book.

I’m a girly-girl, and my favorite color is pink. I collect pink antiques, and my book collecting is similar. I really appreciate the classics, and I think it’s pretty fun when an author can include some piece of history in his or her writing, and really tie it together with something new and exciting. My favorite book of all time is Pride and Prejudice, I think it just represents my book personality through and through. I love a book with a little romance, but I like my romance old school, I’m not into anything too vulgar. Another favorite author of mine is Orson Scott Card, mostly because he is brilliant. Although I naturally gravitate toward a book that’s less manly, he really creates an atmosphere and suspense. So action and old school romance are totally my things. I don’t do boring.

I’m really excited to be a part of Dark Faerie Tales. I was introduced to it by my awesome sister-in-law Bridget, and she has loved reviewing for the blog so much that I just had to take advantage of an opening! So that’s me. I would love to have any critical feedback from anyone regarding my reviews. That’s really what I’m about and really why I am taking on this new adventure, to reignite my reading and writing skills and to improve, or at least keep them alive. I hope that my reviews will help our followers make accurate decisions about what book they will pick up next! Happy reading!

New Dark Faerie Tales Team Member: Meet Candy

May 1st, 2013 Kristie Posted in Dark Faerie Tales Team Comments Off on New Dark Faerie Tales Team Member: Meet Candy

Our introduction comes today from Candy.  She answered our call for new book reviewers last month and we are excited to have her join Dark Faerie Tales.  Candy offers her reading expertise and such wonderful insight to her reviews.  Candy is going to do reviews for us and you can read some of her lovely work after this post. Please officially welcome Candy to the team.

Hi, my name is Candy and yes that is my birth name. I live in a small country town in New York. I live with my wonderful husband and our adorable two year old son. I am a part-time children’s librarian and a part-time stay at home mom so I have the best of both worlds. Of course working at the library means that my to-read list just keeps growing as I find new and wonderful books to read.

I have always enjoyed reading. My mom got me hooked when she would read to me before bed. As soon as I could read by myself, I never went anywhere without a book. My mom also got me hooked on romance novels when she gave me my first romance novel. I have always enjoyed supernatural and paranormal stories, but I really started getting hooked on them when I started reading Twilight and Lynsay Sands books. Today, I will read almost anything but my favorites still include romance, paranormal/supernatural, and historical.  My collection of books just keeps growing and growing and if it were not for my husband, I would probably have floor to ceiling bookshelves in every room of my home.

I started reviewing books for the library I work for to help parents and young adults find books they would enjoy. I have fun writing the reviews so much that when I read the help wanted ad on Dark Faerie Tales, I had to apply to write reviews that more people could find useful. I hope that those who read my reviews read and enjoy the books as much as I do.

New Dark Faerie Tales Team Member: Meet Anjelica

April 22nd, 2013 Kristie Posted in Dark Faerie Tales Team Comments Off on New Dark Faerie Tales Team Member: Meet Anjelica

Our introduction comes today from Anjelica. I recently met Anjelica through work and learned of her passion for reading. When I found out we had the same taste in books and Dark Faerie Tales was looking for a new reviewer, I suggested she apply. Her energy and enthusiasm for reading shines through in every word.  Anjelica is going to do reviews for us and you can read some of her lovely work after this post. Please officially welcome Anjelica to the team.

Growing up in a tiny town in Kansas as an only child and now living on my own with only my adorable puppy Lilly, as a roommate, I’m no stranger to boredom. Luckily, I have parents who cared enough to put a book in my hands rather than switch on the television to occupy me as a child. As a result, books have been my safety blanket my entire life. All through school I was rarely seen without a book or my e-reader in hand. That’s not to say I am anti-social in anyway, because that is just not true. I will jump into a random conversation with literally anyone I see. Granted, those conversations are much more fun if the other person is a reader as well. However, while I adjust to new surroundings, books give me something of a life-line to anchor me to what I know and remember so that I don’t feel overwhelmed by the new and unknown.

JK Rowling is far and out my favorite author. The Harry Potter series inspired me in ways that I have yet to fully find the words to explain, but so much so that I have a tattoo on my wrist with the quote “It’s real for us” and a small lightning bolt beside it. Other favorites of mine include Micheal Grant, L.J. Smith, Jen Bradbury, Neal Shusterman and Anthony Horowitz.

I enjoy reading Young Adult books, but I’ve also been known to enjoy reading some classics like Lord of the Flies and The Great Gatsby. These aren’t books I would have picked up by myself so I’m glad they were required reading or I could have missed out on some really great stories. That is probably the biggest reason I am excited to join this team. I want to branch out from the types of books that already rest on my bookshelves. There are so many talented but unknown authors out there, and I don’t want to miss out on their stories just because I’m just a little too closed minded to pick up their titles.

This opportunity is amazing because I get to explore all new possibilities in discovering new favorite authors and I just can’t wait to dive in and get started. I look forward to sharing my opinions with everyone and getting feedback in return.
