Fifty Shades YA Boys: The Treachery of Beautiful Things by Ruth Long

July 31st, 2012 Kristie Posted in Fifty Shades YA Boys 31 Comments »

Today is the last day for Fifty Shades of YA Boys. It was fun having these wonderful and sexy boys stop by. Jack of the Forest is a guardian who loves to protect his people. He sounds like another swoon-worthy guy who may be a little troubled. Jack stars in the upcoming The Treachery of Beautiful Things by Ruth Francis Long. This novel will be released on August 16, 2012. Want to know what we thought of this book? Read Kayla’s early review here.

Thanks to the wonderful people at Penguin/Dial, one lucky winner will win a copy of The Treachery of Beautiful Things.

Author Bio:

A lifelong fan of fantasy, romance, and ancient mysteries, Ruth Frances Long studied English Literature, History of Religions, and Celtic Civilization in college and now works in a specialized library of rare and unusual books. They call me Jack of the Forest now. I’m a guardian, one of many. Our faces are the same.

I am not a creature of many words. Night time steals even my thoughts and the sun’s cycle governs my moods and feelings. Sometimes my instincts are all I can rely on.

There are many things I’m not allowed or that I’m unable to tell you. I’m a servant, some might say a slave. I certainly would. When you live and die at the whim of another, what else is there to call yourself?

This is not to say my life is without wonder, or beauty. I live in the Realm and that is a place of both wonder and beauty beyond anything the mortal world can offer. It is the place from which dreams, stories, myths and legends come. And I am its guardian. It’s part of me, part of my soul, the forest in which I live, where I have my being, where I care for the forest fae and they care for me. Somewhat. You can never truly trust the fae. I’ve learnt that to my peril, all down through the long years.

Not even the one who is the closest thing to a friend I have. Not even Puck.

When Puck brought word to me of a girl in the forest, a girl on a quest with a heart so pure it woke the oldest magic in the Realm, what could I do but try to help. I had to get her safe beyond our borders, before the Queen or the King discovered she had wandered in the Realm.

But it all went horribly wrong.

Fill in the Blanks:

NOBODY KNOWS I AM: Still loved by my people.

I WISH I COULD STOP: Hurting the people I love and obeying those I hate. But my heart is not my own.

I’M A SUCKER FOR: A lost cause. Innocence. A true heart.

A GOOD TIME FOR ME IS: There is no good time for me.

NOBODY WOULD BELIEVE ME IF THEY SAW ME: At night.

I’D REALLY RATHER: Be free to follow my own path and do as I will.

THE FIRST THING I DO IN THE MORNING IS: Remember who I am.

KILL / FRAK / MARRY:

1. Taylor Swift – Marry – I could listen to her enchanting voice for the rest of my life, and her songs make me feel things long forgotten. Sometimes I wonder if she can sneak a peek into people’s hearts.

2. Megan Fox – Kill – really not my type. Sorry Megan. I’ll make it quick and relatively painless.

3. Jessica Alba – Frak – a woman to admire and love. If I hadn’t already committed to Taylor… Such a difficult choice to make.

Hey, I’m Asher. Rebel angel with gleam in his eye, a smirk on his lips, and a vendetta against the Order. I believe in passion and chaos—and the ability to be the master of your own destiny. I always have a witty retort or a quip handy to shoot back at you, but don’t be fooled. I’m a big softie on the inside. Especially when it comes to Skye, who I’ve been sent to Earth to guide and protect—and, when the time comes, show her how to use her powers of the dark. Neither side knows how her powers will manifest—whether they’ll lean more towards the dark or the light. The Order wants to control her, but the Rebellion knows she can be great. She’s like a ticking timebomb ready to explode—and so is my heart. The hardest thing for me to do is admit defeat.

But now that I’ve met my match in Skye, looks like it’s only a matter of time before one of us caves—and then I’m in trouble. Because love complicates things. Love can sway the outcome of a war.

NOBODY KNOWS I AM: Still punishing myself for a mistake I made a long, long time ago. Well, one person knows—but I trust she’d never tell anyone. I let someone close to me get hurt, and I can never forgive myself for that. It’s why I have to fight so hard to protect Skye. So I don’t make that same mistake again.

I WISH I COULD STOP: Making jokes all the time to hide the fact that I’m really a vulnerable guy. It’s not easy being tall, dark, handsome, and sensitive, let me tell you.

I’M A SUCKER FOR: A girl who gets my razor-sharp wit and can dish it back to me without blinking. No, I’m not thinking of anyone specific.

A GOOD TIME FOR ME IS: Sitting on the roof with Skye, staring up at the stars, laughing at that little crease she gets between her eyes when she’s worried. (See: “I’m a sucker for…”)

NOBODY WOULD BELIEVE ME IF THEY SAW ME: Study. Because I don’t like to study. That kind of thing is for rules-obsessed Guardians. Being prepared is boring. I like to live dangerously.

I’D REALLY RATHER: Be making out with Skye. What can I say?

THE FIRST THING I DO IN THE MORNING IS: Hey, no two days are the same. Life’s full of choices, you have to just wake up and see where the day takes you. I do check up on Skye though. She can take care of herself–that’s what I love about her. And yeah, she’s got her friends by her side all the time. But I can’t focus on anything else if I don’t know she’s safe. Especially not after…well, let’s just say there’s a certain Guardian out there that I don’t trust as far as I can spit. And who knows what he’s capable of.

KILL / FRAK / MARRY:

Kill: I’d like to start out by saying that I would never kill anyone on purpose. Rebels believe in free will, in chaos and passion. Destruction can be a good thing, but only if it’s designed to bring about renewal and change and I–wait, you know what? Britney Spears. I sang “Baby One More Time” once at Karaoke and it still makes me cringe.

Frak: Heh. Miley Cyrus. It’s the “y’all”. Southern girls have that feisty thing.

Marry: Selena Gomez. Don’t you think she looks a little like Skye, with all that long dark hair? Skye can’t sing to save her life, though. It’s adorable. Don’t tell her I told you.

One lucky winner will receive a signed copy of A Beautiful Dark and a signed ARC of A Fractured Light

Available September 25, 2012 from Harper Teen

About the Book:

When she wakes up in unfamiliar surroundings, Skye knows something terrible has happened to her. But it’s not until she hears Asher, the dark, rebellious angel she fell in love with, that the memories come flooding back. She tries to put the past behind her, but she knows she’ll be forever haunted by the ruthless betrayal that almost took her life.

Skye returns home, but with the knowledge of who she really is, nothing can ever be the same. As she tests the limits of her newfound powers, Skye discovers that she’s capable of far more than anyone could have imagined. Both the Order and the Rebellion want her for their side as war between the factions looms. She can’t forget the terrifying truth she now knows about the Order, but something holds her back from embracing the Rebellion.

A Fractured Light picks up right after A Beautiful Dark’s shocking cliffhanger ending and is perfect for fans of Lauren Kate’s Fallen and Becca Fitzpatrick’s Hush, Hush saga.

Fifty Shades YA Boys: Arise by Tara Hudson

July 28th, 2012 Kristie Posted in Fifty Shades YA Boys 28 Comments »

Fifty Shades of YA Boys continues today with Joshua from Tara Hudson’s Hereafter series. He is currently the main squeeze in Hereafter, Arise and next year’s Elegy. Joshua sounds like a really fun guy.

Thanks to Tara, you guys have a chance to win a signed paperback copy of HEREAFTER and hardcover copy of ARISE.  As always, please see details at the end of the post.

About Tara:

Born and raised in Oklahoma, Tara Hudson graduated with a degree in law, mostly because she believed all the horror stories about English majors and their careers in the food-service industry. Luckily, she soon remembered how much she loved telling ghost stories, particularly to her girlfriends who liked visiting abandoned cemeteries as much as she did. Tara currently lives in Oklahoma with her husband, son, and a menagerie of ill-behaved pets.

Fill in the Blanks:

NOBODY KNOWS I AM: Secretly a huge horror movie fan.  I’ll watch anything – the Saw movies, The Shining – but anything bad, too.  I stand by the fact that Piranaconda is one of the best TV movies of all time, hands down.  I wish Amelia would watch them with me but, believe it or not, they creep her out too much.

I WISH I COULD STOP: My addiction to sunflower seeds.  As salty and crunchy as possible- I eat them by the bagful.  I guess it’s a baseball player thing.  But this addiction is better than dip, right?  Makes me much more make-out-able.

I’M A SUCKER FOR: The weird little noises Amelia makes when she sleeps, which isn’t often but…still.  Dude, girl-sighs get me, every time.

A GOOD TIME FOR ME IS: Hanging out with my friends and my girlfriend on a Friday night.  But that can’t happen, because none of them can see her but me.  It’s the one time I really, really wish I could change about my life.

NOBODY WOULD BELIEVE ME IF THEY SAW ME: Get a foot rub.  I love ‘em.  It’s kind of my secret fantasy to go get a pedicure one day but I’d have to do it at night under cover of darkness. And maybe with a S.W.A.T. team guarding me to make sure that no one saw me.  EVER.

I’D REALLY RATHER: Be fishing with my dad.  We haven’t done that since I was a little kid, but I miss it.  There are so many great ponds and creeks around Wilburton.  Only know do I realize that we always avoided fishing in a certain river…

THE FIRST THING I DO IN THE MORNING IS: Stretch, and then smile.  I’m one of those weird people that just loves the mornings.  If I wasn’t such a dude, I’d probably be jumping around the house and singing like some cartoon character.  Seriously, my morning attitude drives everyone around me crazy – but I love it.

KILL / FRAK / MARRY:

1. Carrie Underwood – Um, FRAK.  Have you since the “Good Girl” video.  Wow.  Just…wow.  But don’t tell Amelia, okay?

2. Leann Rimes – KILL.  Ugh, man this girl just bothers me.  I don’t dig cheaters, you know?  But since I actually know what happens to some people after they die, I think “kill” might be too strong a word…

3. Reese Witherspoon – Beauty, brains, and a sense of humor? MARRY, any day of the week.

Fifty Shades YA Boys: Touched by Cyn Balog

July 27th, 2012 Kristie Posted in Fifty Shades YA Boys 28 Comments »

I don’t get it. Love at first sight sounds so cheesy.  Like, in the halls, I’d see couples who just started going together, making out, and I’d think, “Do you really know enough about that person to want to share her saliva?”

And yet with Taryn, that’s what it was. Instalove. Worse than instalove, because even before I saw her in the street that day, bopping along to her MP3 player as she went to tie her shoe, I knew she was going to be it. The it to end all its.

Because I knew everything. I knew that we’d spend one Saturday making out on the beach instead of going to see that slasher film at the Cineplex.  I knew her favorite color, her favorite food, that she used to have a little boat named The Mouse. I knew what she looked like when she laughed, when she slept, when the world came crashing down around her, almost as well as I knew my own name.

That’s what people wish they had, right?  When they just start getting with someone, they want to know more about that person, they want to know if this is the person that’s going to screw them over or make them insanely happy for the rest of their life. Well, I could see it. Screwing me over? Nope. Insane happiness. Well, not insane, but pretty damn good.

So yeah, it was instalove. And no, I can’t stop thinking about it. The rest of my life is crap, and then, there’s her. If that’s bad, if that makes me look like a fool, then I’m a fool. Because the second I saw her, hell, even before I saw her, I knew I wouldn’t mind sharing her saliva. And everything else.

Fill in the blank:

NOBODY KNOWS I AM: As messed up as I am. Sure, they already think I’m a freak. But they don’t know the half of it. If I they knew what went on in my head, they’d probably lock me up somewhere.

I WISH I COULD STOP: Myself from thinking. If I could just exist, go through the motions without seeing the things going on in my brain, I’d be okay. But that isn’t possible.

I’M A SUCKER FOR: A lot of things. Basically, I’m just a sucker. I’m a slave to the script in my head. If it tells me to turn right, I turn right. If I don’t, I know what will happen. At the very least, a killer headache. But it could be much, much worse.

A GOOD TIME FOR ME IS: Staying on script, living another day without throwing the future too much off course.

NOBODY WOULD BELIEVE ME IF THEY SAW ME: Act like a normal person.

I’D REALLY RATHER: Not have a brain.  Sometimes, I think I lobotomy would be a good thing.

THE FIRST THING I DO IN THE MORNING IS: Whatever the script tells me to.

KILL / FRAK / MARRY:

1. Kristen Stewart: Marry. She seems just as screwed up in the head as I am. She gets weird tics like I do, never seems comfortable anywhere. We’d get along great.

2. Jennifer Aniston: Kill. Well, I’d never want to kill anyone. But, if I had to pick one, she’s like, old enough to be my mom, so she’s closest to being dead anyway.

3. Gisele Bundchen: Frak. I have no clue who this chick is, but it’s the only choice I have left over. Hope she’s hot and not one of those stick-thin model types.

About this Book:

Nick Cross always listens to the voice in his head. Because if he doesn’t? Things can go really, really wrong. Like the day he decided to go off script and saved a girl from being run over . . . and let another one drown. Trying to change the future doesn’t work.

But this summer at the Jersey Shore, something’s about to happen that Nick never could have predicted. He meets a girl named Taryn and finds out about the Book of Touch. Now the path that he thought he was on begins to shift . . . and there’s no way to stop things from happening. Or is there?

In a life where there are no surprises, nothing has prepared Nick for what he’s about to discover–or the choice he will be forced to make. . . .

Greetings, readers, I am told your year is far ahead of mine, in 1880. I am eighteen years old and grew up between London and our estate in Greenwich, England. And my soul has been split from my body and imprisoned. In a painting. It’s not been pretty, though I’m assured the canvass of me is quite pretty, so handsome, in fact, that ladies quite swoon upon sight of me. *chuckle*. If the painter weren’t so bloody evil, I’d have commended him for his fine work. I suppose I’ll take the compliments.

I’ve been in training to become a doctor and so if I were to be trapped in a painted prison, rather than in my grand study in my Greenwich estate,  I’d have preferred to be painted in the rooms of the clinic I opened with my student friends in London. I think of myself as a student of medicine more than I think of myself as a Lord. In our London clinic, I thought women swooned around me because they were ill, not for any looks. Perhaps I’m not as good as diagnosing their correct symptoms as I thought…

I’ve met a wonderful, beautiful girl, someone who has pledged to help my terrible situation. You can’t imagine how unbearable it’s been not to be able to be as brave for Miss Natalie Stewart as she’s been for me. The peculiarity of our situation meant we met soul-first. We met seeing the best, the most intimate parts, of ourselves first. I’d do anything for the girl and I hope she’ll let me prove that to her. I help her fight against the demons of her own nightmares, and for that, I’m grateful. To do something is my only solace. I’m a man of action, so being imprisoned while a girl I’ve grown to adore puts herself in danger has been my own particular version of hell. But at least, in this hell, I can be well-read. At least, in this purgatory, there’s books.

My favorite childhood memory is the day mother gave me my key to the estate library. I was seven. She told me any book was mine for the taking and gave me a weekly allowance for any new book of my choice. We understood something about one another then; that books were the answer to our restless minds and souls. She was always fussing about, active and fastidious, but a book never far from her reach. I miss her so much, taken from me too soon. Here inside the painting, the first thing I picked up was the works of Edgar Allan Poe, to see how his characters dealt with situations of inexplicable horror. Situations like mine. Can’t say that was a comfort really. Depressing sot, Poe. “The Oval Portrait” had me feeling rather hopeless about my situation. So instead from now on I’ll read adventure novels to put my mind off my dread fate. Nothing like The Three Musketeers to take one’s mind off evil curses and demons. It also inspires me to practice my fencing with a letter opener. I maintain, I’m rather good with a blade, so I’d be wary of challenging me to a duel… Those are a few words about me. For more, please read my darling Miss Natalie Stewart’s account of me in DARKER STILL and our sequel, releasing this November.

Fill in the blank:

NOBODY KNOWS I AM: A very good dancer. Quadrille and waltz, to be specific.

I WISH I COULD STOP: Plotting ways to kill a demon who is already dead.

I’M A SUCKER FOR: Miss Natalie Stewart.

A GOOD TIME FOR ME IS: Taking Miss Stewart to the theatre to see my best friend, the Gothic actor Nathaniel Veil, and defending her from his artless advances. Afterwards, a stroll arm in arm down a gas-lit New York City street.

NOBODY WOULD BELIEVE ME IF THEY SAW ME: Whip up a chemical compound, like chloroform, in a split second. I don’t flatter myself to say I’m a young medical genius.

I’D REALLY RATHER: Tour the world. There’s nothing more exciting than an adventure in a new place. Preferably with a pretty girl by my side.

THE FIRST THING I DO IN THE MORNING IS: Plot how I’m going to steal Natalie away from her chaperones for a swift but thorough kiss.

KILL / FRAK / MARRY:

I don’t know the meaning of this word “Frak” in your American idioms nor do I know of these females. I do not make uninformed decisions, so I’ll have to defer these answers to a modern gentleman. But truly, a GENTLEMAN would not answer such questions so bluntly. A GENTLEMAN has his charm, class and wit still he wins the girl he prizes.
