Publishing News

We decided to put a list together of some of our most anticipated young adult reads for 2017. Titles aren’t really listed in any particular order, but we will certainly be stalking these titles — desperately seeking cover reveals and sneak peaks of any kind!!! Most of these are fantasy titles because that happens to be our favorite genre but rest assured we are super excited about some contemporary titles as well (we might have to make a list of those too)! Are there any titles we missed that you are super excited for? Make sure to let us know in the comments. Which of the ones listed are you most excited about?

Wicked Like a Wildfire (Hibiscus Daughter #1) by Lana Popovic

Goodreads Synopsis (Expected publication: 2017 by Katherine Tegen Books):

All the women in Iris and Malina’s family are born with a gleam—a unique way of manipulating beauty through magic. Seventeen-year-old Iris sees flowers as fractals and turns her kaleidoscope visions into glasswork, her twin sister Malina interprets moods as music, and their cold, distant mother Jasmina bakes scenery into decadent treats at her confectionery in Old Town Cattaro, Montenegro.

Jasmina forbids Iris and Malina to share their gleams with anyone, and above all, she forbids them to fall in love—being discovered could shatter the quiet lives they’ve built in their tucked-away, seaside town. But Iris and Malina are tired of abiding by their mother’s rules and rebel in secret whenever they can.

Yet when a mysterious, white-haired woman attacks their mother and leaves her hovering between life and death, the sisters unearth an ancient curse that haunts their line—a wicked bargain that masquerades as a blessing, and binds the twins’ fates—and hearts—to a force larger than life. To save each other, they must untangle a thousand years of lies and reveal their own hurtful secrets. But even the deepest sacrifice might not be enough.

Wicked Like a Wildfire is the first book in a sumptuous, bewitching duology about the power of love, death, magic, and the many faces of beauty.

Askari by Kristen Ciccarelli

Goodreads Synopsis (Expected publication: July 27th 2017 by Gollancz):

As a child, Asha’s mother told her ancient, forbidden stories to drive away her nightmares – and the telling of them killed her. And when Asha repeated those stories, they summoned an ancient dragon which almost destroyed her city, and left Asha horribly scarred. Ever since, she has protected her city and people (and tried to make amends) by dragon-slaying. And now she may have a way to both atone for the deaths she caused and to escape an arranged marriage: her father will free her, in exchange for the head of Kovu, the ancient dragon. And the only obstacle in her path is a defiant slave-boy.

Blood Rose Rebellion by Rosalyn Eves

Goodreads Synopsis (Expected publication: March 28th 2017 by Knopf):

The thrilling first book in a YA fantasy trilogy for fans of Red Queen. In a world where social prestige derives from a trifecta of blood, money, and magic, one girl has the ability to break the spell that holds the social order in place.

Sixteen-year-old Anna Arden is barred from society by a defect of blood. Though her family is part of the Luminate, powerful users of magic, she is Barren, unable to perform the simplest spells. Anna would do anything to belong. But her fate takes another course when, after inadvertently breaking her sister’s debutante spell—an important chance for a highborn young woman to show her prowess with magic—Anna finds herself exiled to her family’s once powerful but now crumbling native Hungary.

Her life might well be over.

In Hungary, Anna discovers that nothing is quite as it seems. Not the people around her, from her aloof cousin Noémi to the fierce and handsome Romani Gábor. Not the society she’s known all her life, for discontent with the Luminate is sweeping the land. And not her lack of magic. Isolated from the only world she cares about, Anna still can’t seem to stop herself from breaking spells.

As rebellion spreads across the region, Anna’s unique ability becomes the catalyst everyone is seeking. In the company of nobles, revolutionaries, and Romanies, Anna must choose: deny her unique power and cling to the life she’s always wanted, or embrace her ability and change that world forever.

The Continent (The Continent #1) by Keira Drake

Goodreads Synopsis (Expected publication: January 3rd 2017 by Harlequin TEEN):

For her sixteenth birthday, Vaela Sun receives the most coveted gift in all the Spire—a trip to the Continent. It seems an unlikely destination for a holiday: a cold, desolate land where two “uncivilized” nations remain perpetually at war. Most citizens tour the Continent to see the spectacle and violence of battle—a thing long vanished in the Spire. For Vaela—a smart and talented apprentice cartographer—it is an opportunity to improve upon the maps she’s drawn of this vast, frozen land.

But an idyllic aerial exploration is not to be had: the realities of war are made clear in a bloody battle seen from the heli-plane during the tour, leaving Vaela forever changed. And when a tragic accident leaves her stranded on the Continent, she has no illusions about the true nature of the danger she faces. Starving, alone, and lost in the middle of a war zone, Vaela must try to find a way home—but first, she must survive.

*THE CONTINENT is the first book in Keira Drake’s sparkling debut fantasy trilogy.

Royal Bastrds by Andrew Shvarts

Goodreads Synopsis (Expected publication: June 6th 2017 by Disney-Hyperion):

Being a bastard blows. Tilla would know. Her father, Lord Kent of the Western Province, loved her as a child, but cast her aside as soon as he had trueborn children.

At sixteen, Tilla spends her days exploring long-forgotten tunnels beneath the castle with her stablehand half brother, Jax, and her nights drinking with the servants, passing out on Jax’s floor while her castle bedroom collects dust. Tilla secretly longs to sit by her father’s side, resplendent in a sparkling gown, enjoying feasts with the rest of the family. Instead, she sits with the other bastards, like Miles of House Hampstedt, an awkward scholar who’s been in love with Tilla since they were children.

Then, at a feast honoring the visiting princess Lyriana, the royal shocks everyone by choosing to sit at the Bastards’ Table. Before she knows it, Tilla is leading the sheltered princess on a late-night escapade. Along with Jax, Miles, and fellow bastard Zell, a Zitochi warrior from the north, they stumble upon a crime they were never meant to witness.

Rebellion is brewing in the west, and a brutal coup leaves Lyriana’s uncle, the Royal Archmagus, dead—with Lyriana next on the list. The group flees for their lives, relentlessly pursued by murderous mercenaries; their own parents have put a price on their heads to prevent the king and his powerful Royal Mages from discovering their treachery.

The bastards band together, realizing they alone have the power to prevent a civil war that will tear their kingdom apart—if they can warn the king in time. And if they can survive the journey.

Song of the Current by Sarah Tolcser

Goodreads Synopsis (Expected publication: June 6th 2017 by Bloomsbury):

Caroline Oresteia has always been destined for the river. Her father is a wherryman, as was her grandmother. All Caro needs is for the river god to whisper her name, and her fate is sealed. But at seventeen, Caro may be too late.

So when pirates burn ships and her father is arrested, Caro volunteers to transport a dangerous cargo in exchange for his release. Secretly, Caro hopes that by piloting her own wherry, the river god will finally speak her name.

But when the cargo becomes more than Caro expected, she finds herself caught in a web of politics and lies. With much more than her father’s life at stake, Caro must choose between the future she knows, and the one she never could have imagined.

Now a new evil is on the horizon, and her granddaughter, Elloren, is believed to be Carnissa’s heir—but while she is the absolute image of her famous grandmother, Elloren is utterly devoid of power in a society that prizes magical ability above nearly all else.

When she is granted the opportunity to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming an apothecary, Elloren is eager to join her brothers at the prestigious Verpax University and finally embrace a destiny of her own, free from the shadow of her grandmother’s legacy. But she soon realizes that the University, which admits all manner of races—including the fire-wielding, winged Icarals, the sworn enemies of her people—is an even more treacherous place for the granddaughter of the Black Witch.

As she is lowered into the dragon’s chamber, she assumes her life is over until Golmarr, the young prince she just spurned, follows her with the hopes of being her hero and slaying the dragon. But the dragon has a different plan. . . .

Nemesis by Brendan Reichs

Goodreads Synopsis (Expected publication: March 21st 2017 by G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young ):

Orphan Black meets Lord of the Flies in this riveting new thriller from the co-author of the Virals series.

It’s been happening since Min was eight. Every two years, on her birthday, a strange man finds her and murders her in cold blood. But hours later, she wakes up in a clearing just outside her tiny Idaho hometown—alone, unhurt, and with all evidence of the horrifying crime erased.

Across the valley, Noah just wants to be like everyone else. But he’s not. Nightmares of murder and death plague him, though he does his best to hide the signs. But when the world around him begins to spiral toward panic and destruction, Noah discovers that people have been lying to him his whole life. Everything changes in an eye blink.

For the planet has a bigger problem. The Anvil, an enormous asteroid threatening all life on Earth, leaves little room for two troubled teens. Yet on her sixteenth birthday, as she cowers in her bedroom, hoping not to die for the fifth time, Min has had enough. She vows to discover what is happening in Fire Lake and uncovers a lifetime of lies: a vast conspiracy involving the sixty-four students of her sophomore class, one that may be even more sinister than the murders.

Spindle Fire (Spindle Fire #1) by Lexa Hillyer

Goodreads Synopsis (Expected publication: April 11th 2017 by HarperCollins):

Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Leigh Bardugo, Spindle Fire is an enthralling, wholly original re-imagining of a classic faerie story.

Half-sisters Isabelle and Aurora are polar opposites: Isabelle is the king’s headstrong illegitimate daughter, whose sight was tithed by faeries; Aurora, beautiful and sheltered, was tithed her sense of touch and voice on the same day. Despite their differences, the sisters have always been extremely close.

And then everything changes, with a single drop of Aurora’s blood, a Faerie Queen who is preparing for war, a strange and enchanting dream realm—and a sleep so deep it cannot be broken.

Spindle Fire is a tour de force fantasy set in the dwindling, deliciously corrupt world of the fae, and featuring two truly unforgettable heroines.

New York, NY, December 17, 2015—Delacorte Press, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books, has acquired and will publish a young adult series by actor, author, and multitalented creative artist Jason Segel and New York Times bestselling author Kirsten Miller. Segel made his publishing debut in 2014 with the bestselling middle-grade trilogy Nightmares!, also co-authored with Miller. The three-book YA deal was announced today by Beverly Horowitz, Vice President, Publisher, Delacorte Press. The series will be edited by Krista Marino, Executive Editor, Delacorte Press.

Segel has starred in such films as Knocked Up; I Love You, Man; Jeff Who Lives at Home; and The Five-Year Engagement; among others. On television, Segel starred as Marshall on the hit comedy series How I Met Your Mother for nine seasons, and starred in Judd Apatow’s Emmy-nominated Freaks and Geeks.

Segel and Miller will team up again for OTHERWORLD, an epic young adult trilogy for readers of James Dashner and Lev Grossman. In OTHERWORLD, awkward teenage gamer Simon is given the opportunity to be the first to test the newest set of virtual reality goggles before they hit the market. Katherine’s been kidnapped by someone or something inside the virtual world, and saving her is up to Simon. OTHERWORLD is a heart-stopping quest through a Tolkienesque virtual reality world. The future is here. The future is OTHERWORLD.

Says Segel, “Connecting with the readers of the Nightmares! series at events has been a truly special experience for me, and I am incredibly excited to have the opportunity to keep writing stories for these readers, and to grow with them into young adult with OTHERWORLD.

“We were thrilled when Jason shared with us how much he was inspired by his readers and that he had a new series idea. We knew that OTHERWORLD would be the perfect next project,” says Horowitz. “Jason and Kirsten are each amazingly talented on their own, and spectacular as a team. I am so pleased to continue to work with this bestselling duo and to bring their next series to teen readers,” added Marino.

The deal for North American rights to the trilogy was negotiated by Horowitz, with WME, Abrams Entertainment, and Sloane Offer Weber & Dern LLP on behalf of Segel. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Segel and Miller’s bestselling Nightmares! series is an adventure story about a group of kids who realize it’s up to them to save their town from fear, which has manifested itself in the form of nightmare creatures that have slipped into the everyday world. At its heart, Nightmares! is about kids overcoming their fears. Book two, Nightmares! The Sleepwalker Tonic, released this fall, on September 8, 2015, and the final book in the series, Nightmares! The Lost Lullaby, will be published on September 13, 2016.

One with You

Available April 5, 2016 from St. Martin’s Griffin

About this Book:

Gideon Cross. Falling in love with him was the easiest thing I’ve ever done. It happened instantly. Completely. Irrevocably.

Marrying him was a dream come true. Staying married to him is the fight of my life. Love transforms. Ours is both a refuge from the storm and the most violent of tempests. Two damaged souls entwined as one.

We have bared our deepest, ugliest secrets to one another. Gideon is the mirror that reflects all my flaws … and all the beauty I couldn’t see. He has given me everything. Now, I must prove I can be the rock, the shelter for him that he is for me. Together, we could stand against those who work so viciously to come between us.

But our greatest battle may lie within the very vows that give us strength. Committing to love was only the beginning. Fighting for it will either set us free … or break us apart.

Heartbreakingly and seductively poignant, One with You is the breathlessly awaited finale to the Crossfire® saga, the searing love story that has captivated millions of readers worldwide.

February 10th, 2013 Angela Posted in Publishing News Comments Off on Publishing News: New YA Series With Lauren DeStefano

NEW YORK, February 7, 2013 – Lauren DeStefano, the New York Times bestselling author of The Chemical Garden trilogy has signed on to write a brand-new utopian series with Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers. The new series will be published in Spring 2014 and will be called The Internment Chronicles. The title of the first book is Perfect Ruin. In addition to the new series, two short stories will be published as eBooks to complement the story. The final book of The Chemical Garden Trilogy,Sever, goes on sale February 12, 2013.

On Internment, the floating island in the clouds where fifteen-year-old Morgan Stockhour lives, getting too close to the edge can lead to madness. Even though Morgan’s older brother Lex was a Jumper, Morgan vows never to end up like him. She tries her best not to mind that her life is orderly and boring, and if she ever wonders about the ground, and why it is forbidden, she takes solace in her best friend, Pen, and her betrothed, Basil.

Then a murder, the first in a generation, rocks the city. With whispers swirling and fear on the wind, Morgan can no longer stop herself from investigating, especially when she meets Judas. He is the boy being blamed for the murder—betrothed to the victim—but Morgan is convinced of his innocence. Secrets lie at the heart of Internment, but nothing can prepare Morgan for what she will find—or who she will lose.

“With each book in the Chemical Garden Trilogy, Lauren DeStefano amazed more and more readers,” says Justin Chanda Vice President Publisher of Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers. “Just wait until they read Perfect Ruin!”

Lauren DeStefano adds, “I am over the moon and thrilled to take readers to a different world with this new series. After a great run with my Chemical Garden books, it was just amazing that Simon & Schuster and I could fall in love all over again with new characters as we embark on this latest journey, and it’s something that I can’t wait to share with readers.”

Senior Editor Alexandra Cooper negotiated the deal for North American rights and audio with Barbara Poelle at the Irene Goodman Literary Agency. Translation rights will be handled by Baror International. The first book will be published on April 1, 2014.
