Cover Redo: Mary: The Summoning by Hillary Monahan

March 30th, 2015 Kaitlin Posted in Remaking Covers Comments Off on Cover Redo: Mary: The Summoning by Hillary Monahan

I read Mary: The Summoning and reviewed it. It was the first horror novel I’d ever read, and the words on the pages were much more gruesome than the cover depicted.

Mary The Summoning

I thought that the cover was cool and decided to try to redo the dark, eerie tone. I took my sister, a single candle, and Photoshop, as well as my shiny Nikon D3200.

Mary copy

I think that it turned out pretty well, though maybe if I had decided black and white for beyond the mirror like the original, it might have looked better.

So that’s my cover redo for Mary!

Cover Redo: Thirty Sunsets by Christine Hurley Deriso

March 23rd, 2015 Kaitlin Posted in Remaking Covers Comments Off on Cover Redo: Thirty Sunsets by Christine Hurley Deriso

I read and reviewed Thirty Sunsets a while back. I found it enjoyable enough, and loved the simplicity of the purple cover:

I remember thinking, though. I love a good sunset cover, and this book has “sunset” in the name. Why isn’t there a sunset? Sunset covers are gorgeous.

Look!

This thought sparked me to grab my camera bag and go to the beach on a cool Friday. The sunset wasn’t spectacular, but I got some good shots all the same, and I used Photoshop to convert it.

Thirty

I do like the original cover better, but it was fun to adventure to the beach and take a few shots.

Remaking Covers: The Artisans by Julie Reece

February 1st, 2015 Kaitlin Posted in Remaking Covers Comments Off on Remaking Covers: The Artisans by Julie Reece

Book covers — as much as we’d like to deny it, we all judge a book by its cover. This doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy books with less than pretty covers, but we are much more likely to pick up books with, well, ones we would like to display on our shelves.

I love photography. I love covers. I love photoshop.

So I decided to do a feature where I remake covers. Many will be covers I’m not pleased with, but some will just be covers I have a cool idea for that aren’t bad at all.

For the first cover remake, I chose The Artisans. I’ve never read the book, but the cover is a tad boring and it’s a Beauty and the Beast retelling, which gave me ideas.

Original Cover:

The Artisans

These photos are not my own! I got the silhouette from a Shutterstock picture and the rose bush from Botanical Journeys Plant Guides.

What do you think about my cover redo? Do you like it better or worse?

What covers should I remake in the future?
