Supernatural Smack Down: Jennifer L. Armentrout’s Hunter

May 21st, 2013 Kristie Posted in Supernatural Smack Down No Comments »

LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE…

Hunter

Name: Hunter (Yeah, I don’t need a last name, so don’t ask)

Book Title: Obsession (An Arum Novel: Adult companion novel to the Lux Series)

Job: I work for the Department of Defense to help protect the world from the Luxen.  The DOD seems to think I’m their bitch.  They would be wrong.

Height: 6’6”

Weight: My weight doesn’t matter.  Just the fact that I’m a solid wall of rock hard abs and pure muscle.

Hair Color: Wavy and black as sin

Eye Color: Extremely pale blue

From: I’m an alien, so obviously not from this planet.

Significant Other: Serena Cross

Signature Move: There’s not any kind of trouble I can’t ass kick my way out of, but I guess I’m fond of neck breaking.  It seems to get the job done.  I can also feed off of the Luxen and humans which can be a pretty cool party trick.

Kill Highlights: I’ve killed so many of the Luxen that I’ve lost count.  Not that they’re even worth counting.   I do take great pleasure in killing anyone—Arum, Luxen, or human—that messes with Serena.  Nobody, and I mean nobody, touches her.  Ever.

Enemies: The Luxen are my biggest enemy, and now that I’ve met Serena, the government may be a close second.  Too bad I don’t care.  I can take any of them.  Try me.

Favorite Pastime: I like to do things with my hands….yeah, those things.   When I can’t find Serena to keep my hands busy, I like to use them to build and carve.

Other Facts: I can make some kickass bacon, I can speak to you in my true form by projecting my thoughts into your mind, I like to covet pretty things, I expect everyone to do everything my way, and I love blow…pops.  I have bowls of them all over my house.

#

Hunter: So, I was asked to be a part of the Supernatural Smackdown and I knew I was the perfect fu–

Daemon:  What. The. Hell.?  You were asked to be a part of the Supernatural Smackdown?

Hunter:  Seriously, Luxen? You think you can interrupt me?  I’m gonna kick your–you know, what are you even doing here right now?  You have your own books, so stay outta mine.

Daemon:  I just stopped by because there must be some mistake.   There is no way an Arum, you, would be chosen over a Luxen, uh me, to be in this Smackdown.

Hunter:  Oh, little boy, you must not have heard, the Supernatural Smackdown is for adults, not kids.  You might want to hurry along now because I think you are needed in the sandbox.

Daemon:  You sure you want to go there, man?  Because you aren’t really painting a great picture of yourself for this competition.  Picking on a little boy and all.

Hunter:  You know, I think you’re right.  You just sit there quietly and suck your thumb while I list all the reasons I can take anyone in this competition.  First, my badassery knows no limits.

Daemon:  Is badassery even a real word?

Hunter:  Shut up, Light Bright.  Or, I’ll show you that badassery is most definitely a word.

Daemon:  You know what?  I’ve got far more important things to be doing than sitting here listening to you talk about yourself.  Let’s just do this.

Hunter:  This is gonna be so easy, it doesn’t really seem fair.  But, you know what, Luxen?  I don’t ever play fair so get ready.

Serena:  Hey, Hey!  Boys, just cut it out.  Hunter, this is supposed to be a friendly Supernatural Smackdown and the Luxen isn’t even in the competition.   And, you, Daemon is it?  Just get out of here before this gets messy.  You’ve got your own issues to be concerned with right now.

Daemon:  You got your girl fighting your battles for you now, Hunter?

Hunter:  At least I know where my woman is at the moment.  She’s right here, right now, with me.

Daemon (turning to leave):  Touché, Arum, Touché.

Serena (sighs):  I wouldn’t say that went well.

Hunter:  Well, no, it didn’t.  I was just about to prove my badassery when you showed up.

Serena:  I may have kept you from trying to kill him during the Supernatural Smackdown!

Hunter:  If his mouth had kept running, there would have been no trying about it.

Serena:  I seriously don’t know what to do with you sometimes.

Hunter:  Oh, I know exactly what you can do with me…and it involves us getting out of here.  Right. Now.

About this Book:

He’s arrogant, domineering, and… To. Die. For.

Hunter is a ruthless killer. And the Department of Defense has him firmly in their grasp, which usually doesn’t chafe too badly because he gets to kill bad guys. Most of the time he enjoys his job. That is, until he’s saddled with something he’s never had to do before: protect a human from his mortal enemy.

Serena Cross didn’t believe her best friend when she claimed to have seen the son of a powerful senator turn into something… unnatural. Who would? But then she witnesses her friend’s murder at the hands of what can only be an alien, thrusting her into a world that will kill to protect their secret.

Hunter stirs Serena’s temper and her lust despite their differences. Soon he’s doing the unthinkable—breaking the rules he’s lived by, going against the government to keep Serena safe. But are the aliens and the government the biggest threats to Serena’s life…or is it Hunter?

#

Hey! Guess I need to let you know about me. Get comfortable and have a few of my cookies here. ‘Cause I love to share. Where do I start without the quintessential my name is? Eh, who cares? My name is Aggie McClure. My life has changed a great deal over the past couple of months. A few months ago, I was living with my parents in our family penthouse in New York City. As the daughter of the Manhattan pack leader—a rich one—that is, I was expected to fall in line and become the good daughter. I was expected to mate with another pack leader. But my father, the master manipulator in question, didn’t raise a fool—even with all the control he wanted to exert over me. Growing up the daughter of a millionaire, I didn’t suffer. But I was expected to learn to defend myself as a future alpha female. That meant training in hand-to-hand combat, lessons in warfare and battle planning, and basic firearm techniques. I’m not the best with advanced weaponry, but if you step up to me to party and act like you want to mess with me or my friends, I’ll sure as hell go Doc Holliday and be your huckleberry.

A few days after I was of legal drinking age, my dad took a rare night off work to take his socialite daughter from Park Avenue to the gritty corners of New York City where I was forced to defend myself. No bodyguards. No backups. It all began with a drink in a busy Irish pub. Isn’t that always the opening line: two werewolves walked into a bar… I sat at the bar and ordered a drink. I could’ve pretended to be coy and let my dad order, but I’d gotten plenty of drinks before. While I got my alcohol-laden beverage, my dad had been busy going through the crowd. Eventually, he stopped to talk to two older chicks. The rough-around-the-edges type. He pointed out how he’d seen me take something from them. They searched their pockets and then threw a dark glare in my direction. I couldn’t resist grinning. Now what kind of thief hung out for a drink after they robbed someone? Now most ladies don’t want to mess with me. But, thanks to my good ol’ dad, my pockets needed to be searched. And the minute they put their hands on me it was on like Donkey Kong. Mistake number one, the gal didn’t ask me about her wallet, she just grabbed my shoulder. Second mistake, you don’t grab a werewolf and step up to them like ‘what’s up’. I took her bold hand with my right hand and squeezed that sucker.

“Ask first. Grab later,” I growled. “Common decency means you ask someone what’s going on.”

The woman’s friend tried to grab me next, but I was ready for them. Soon enough, all three of us were tangled together on the floor. Them swinging and me blocking. Attempts to walk away pretty much ended when one of them slapped me. Hard. Restraint for the wolf side of me pretty much ended there.

My shouts of, “I didn’t do it,” apparently translated to them as: “Wipe the floor with my face, please.”

A few seconds later, both of them were out cold on the floor and the sounds of police sirens reached my sensitive ears. I made a beeline for the door and found dad waiting next to it. With arms crossed and a wide grin like I’d caught my first rabbit during the full moon, he couldn’t get anymore smug.

As we left the bar I said, “I can’t take you anywhere, can I?”

As far as the Smackdown is concerned, I can win these matches because I fight to win. I’ve had too many people try to tell me what to do. If I want to enter the Smackdown, I’ll damn well do it because I want to do it. I’m here to represent. Let’s do this!

#

Hello. I’m Tanner Chance, and, yes, I am a bad ass.

But then, in order to survive, I had to become this way.  I grew up in one of the most vicious panther shifter packs in the world. Kill or be killed—that was my father’s motto. I guess it’s a good thing that SOB is dead.  Now there is a new alpha in charge—me.

I spend my days working as a detective in New Orleans.  I’ve got a hunting instinct that can’t be contained, and tracking down criminals, well, let’s just say they are my prey of choice.  When night comes, I really let me wild side out. All those creatures hiding in the dark? They need to fear me.

And that’s why I’m here for the smack down. It’s time to claim my official Bad Ass title.  Everyone needs to be official, right?  Besides, I’ve got a girl to impress. She’s a real angel.  And I mean that.  I want her to know that she count on me. That I’ll keep her safe—no matter who or what might try to come after her. No one will ever hurt her, not while I’m near.

So…let’s get this party started. Who wants to tangle with me first?  My claws are ready, and I’m eager to go in for the kill…

About this Book:

Earthly Delights

With a messed up family background and a tendency to grow claws and fangs, Tanner Chance isn’t exactly the boy next door. But he’s a decent cop, and he keeps himself on the side of the good guys. Convenient, because when he rescues a survivor of a horrific shifter attack he finds himself instantly smitten—with an honest-to-goodness angel, as innocent as she is irresistible.

Marna may be angelic, but she’s not stupid or weak. She can take care of herself. Tanner is more temptation than protection anyway. Or so she thinks, until someone wearing her face starts taking out some of New Orleans’ more unsavory paranormals. With police and predators both gunning for her blood, Marna has no choice but to trust Tanner…even though what’s sparking between them is hotter than anything holy.

Supernatural Smack Down: Doranna Durgin’s Devin James

May 17th, 2013 Kristie Posted in Supernatural Smack Down 7 Comments »

LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE…

Devin James

Name: Devin James

Book Series: Demon Blade (from the Nocturne line)

Job: Unofficial paladin.  Teaches at a friend’s martial arts gym on the side.

Height: 6’1″

Weight: 170

Hair Color: a dark, nutty brown

Eye Color:  blue-grey

From: Albuquerque, NM

Significant Other: Natalie Chambers

Signature Move: A partnership with his demon blade and all that comes with it–and that means always somehow having the right weapon for the moment–whenever, whatever

Kill Highlights: He doesn’t consider them highlights.  He does what’s necessary.

Enemies:  The demon blade.  Anyone who wants the demon blade.  Anyone who has a demon blade.  Anyone who would hurt anyone else.  It’s a busy life…

Favorite Pastime: Running and Tai Chi with Natalie, and other…grounding activities.  Yeah.  Let’s call it that.

Other Facts: Devin James wields a demon blade. Or does the demon blade wield him? The bond between man and steel is soul deep, the source of Devin’s power and an ever-present torment. Struggling against the evil forged within the blade, Devin patrols the dark streets of Albuquerque, searching for innocents to rescue.  The blade enhances his strength, his agility, his ability to heal…and in its search for redemption, it sends him out to fight the battles it craves.  It can take the shape of any non-projectile weapon–but like Devin, this blade has never had to face another of its kind.  And like Devin, it’s about to…

So Devin needs to stay sharp.  What better place than a supernatural smackdown?

#

Devin James and the Demon Blade

Here’s the thing about me and the blade…at any given time, one of us is just a little bit mad.

Usually it’s the blade, but you never really know.

Anheriel is its name, and it thinks a lot of itself.  I suppose it has reason, the little bastard.  I didn’t understand its nature when it latched onto my brother, and neither did he. Eventually it drove him to the wild road.

That’s the nice way to say it.  Bug-fuck crazy is another.  Or just plain evil…take your pick.  So when my brother died and the blade moved onto me, I knew what was coming.

I’m fighting it, let’s put it that way.

But damn, the thing comes in handy, too.  How could it not?  Yeah, it goes looking for trouble.  That’s its whole gig.  Elemental spirit trapped in a blade and turned into living metal, now on a search for redemption.  So yeah, it can take the form of whatever bladed weapon it wants.  Anheriel hangs out as a pocket knife most of the time, but if someone calls up the asshole factor, they’re gonna be looking at a specialty tactical blade–agate handle, sweet sharp blade, strong cut-back…deadly.

I told you it thinks a lot of itself.

Now and then it has an excuse to show up as a saber.  It likes that.  Things never end well for the other guy when that happens.

They never end well for the blade wielder, either.  Not in the long run.  A demon blade needs a human to get the job done–the looking for trouble, the resolving it.  The redemption.  But the damned things can’t help but be what they are–insidious, devious darkness.  So they get into a wielder’s head…into his soul.  They use up wielders and throw them away, hunting for the one who’ll be strong enough to hold fast.  Because it’s always there–that little whisper, that little suggestion to go too far.  To take advantage of the strengths it provides.  Because unless the bad guy has a blade, he won’t be faster than I am.  Simple truth, that.  And if he hurts me, I’m not staying down.  Healing fast is a bitch and I pay the price, but I can take a licking and come back for more.  And the way the blade cleans up the scene…it’s so easy to take that one step too far. To go from stopping trouble to being the trouble.

That’s okay.  As it turns out, I intend to be the one who’s strong enough–maybe the first one.  And I’ve already gotten this far.

So what am I doing here?  You’d think I’d have enough of this kind of thing.  But one thing I’ve learned from Natalie is this:  If I’m going to fight this bastard of a blade, I’ve got to get in its face.  I don’t wait for it to come to me with its trouble–not any longer.  I go looking.  And I make my own choices.  And this little gathering…hell, yeah, it’ll keep that demon busy.

Hear that, Anheriel?  Bring it on.

About Doranna:

Doranna responded to all early injunctions to “put down that book/notebook and go outside to play” by climbing trees to read & write. Such quirkiness of spirit has led to an eclectic publishing journey, spanning genres over 30 novels to include mystery, SF/F, action-romance, paranormal, franchise, and a slew of essays and short stories.

But after all that, mostly she still prefers to hang around outside her New Mexico mountain home with the animals, riding dressage on her Lipizzan and training for performance sports with the dogs. She doesn’t believe so much in mastering the beast within, but in channeling its power. For good or bad has yet to be decided…

Dun Lady’s Jess, Doranna’s first published fantasy novel, received the 1995 Compton Crook/Stephen Tall award for the best first book in the fantasy, science fiction, and horror genres. When she’s not writing, Doranna builds web pages, including this one.
