Supernatural Smack Down: Nancy Gideon’s Cale Terriot

May 27th, 2013 Kristie Posted in Supernatural Smack Down 19 Comments »

Cale Terriot

Name:  Cale Terriot

Book Series: PRINCE OF SHADOWS, Book 8 in the “By Moonlight” dark paranormal shape-shifter series.

Job:  I’m a prince.  Really! As one of the Twelve of the House of Terriot, I’m in line to inherit the Shifter throne from my father, Bram, and control our territories in the southwest along with our investments in Reno and Las Vegas. But my real job is as a warrior. Being a Terriot is about claiming everything we can reach, wanting everything we see, and holding onto everything we have—an often brutal job. And I’m up for it. Always.

Height:  a less than impressive 5’9” next to my half-brothers who top 6’2 easy.

Weight: a lean, mean 165 of clan-tattooed muscle and sexy scars

Hair Color: dark blond shot through with Terriot red

Eye Color:  gray/green/blue depending on mood and clothes, but usually covered by dark glasses

From (Location): Lake Tahoe, NV, mountaintop compound of the Terriots.

Significant Other: Kendra Terriot, my distant cousin, soul mate, and soon to be queen – as soon as I earn the right to have her.

Signature Move:  A quick, deadly combination of mixed martial arts that puts them down and keeps them down.  Fighting is serious business in my family. We have to be ready to protect our own or go to war with other clans at any minute.

Kill Highlights:  Underground cage fighting in my natural state. Though our basic form is usually reserved for war or mating because of the danger involved, there was no other way to avenge the insult done to me and my family, and to the honor of my future mate, except to challenge the three of my brother’s friends who thought it was a good idea to put their hands on her to combat. Pretty bad f-ing idea. One lost his throat, one his heart and one his head. No one harms what’s mine.

Enemies: Someone in my position has no friends. Everyone’s a potential enemy, even family. Especially family. Obvious enemies are our rivals the Guedry family out of Memphis who nearly crushed us before my father took control of our clan with an iron fist.  He’s built us back up as a power to be feared, if not necessarily respected, through methods I haven’t always agreed with. Then there are those outcasts in New Orleans clustering around that unknown, Max Savoie. The Prophesied One, they’re calling him. Dangerous, is what I call him, because he’s causing friction amongst our people. And I can’t forget my own personal demon, Silas MacCreedy, who’s been a pain in my backside since childhood and is now threatening my future with the female I love.  I don’t deal well with threats, so something’s going to have to be done about him.

Favorite Pastime: Wooing my future queen. After spending most of my life fighting for the chance to claim her as my own, I’m finding it the more difficult battle to convince her to bond with me as my mate. Difficult, but not without its rewards.

Other Facts: Growing up as the runt of the litter in a dog-eat-dog warrior clan, the struggle just to survive became a fight to excel once I met my life-mate, Kendra.  My father and brothers think it’s about having the crown. But it’s always been about just one thing.  Having her. And there’s nothing I won’t do to make that happen.

If only I were bigger, stronger, faster, tougher, I could protect those I love from anyone who tried to hurt them.

Bigger, stronger, faster, tougher had become his personal mantra, and it had beaten him almost to the limits of his life. Over and over. Knocked down, bruised, bloodied, and broken, but always getting up. Always. Eventually, his brothers and then his trainers had begun to look at him differently, with surprise, with amusement, and finally, with hard-won respect. He’d heard their ridicule turn to uncomfortable advice: Stay down, Cale. Don’t you know when you’re beaten? He wasn’t beaten until he stopped trying to regain his feet. Never give up. Never back down. Never walk away. What don’t kill you . . . He was a Terriot prince. The world would bend and tremble before him.

About Nancy:

With over 50 sales to her credit since her first publication in 1987, Portage, Michigan author Nancy Gideon’s writing career is as versatile as the romance market, itself. Her books encompass genres from historicals and regencies to contemporary suspense and the paranormal. Her works have been published overseas in Romanian, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Danish, German, Icelandic and Chinese, among other languages.

Also listed on the International Movie Database (IMDB), she collaborated on the indie horror films In the Woods and Savage with screenwriting and ADR script credits, and even played the character “Bar Extra.”

A national speaker on writing in general and romance in particular, Gideon is a Western Michigan University honors grad with a major in journalism and minors in history and communications. She’s a member of Novelist, Inc. and the Mid-Michigan, Greater Detroit, PASIC and FF&P chapters of Romance Writers of America®, and is former vice-president, published author co-liaison and award-winning newsletter editor for MMRWA.

The mother of two grown sons, one married and proud producer of her grandson and the other shanghaied into being her assistant, she also works full time for the law firm, Redmond, Redmond & Yokom.

A prolific writer, Gideon attributes her creative output, which once peaked at seven novels in one year, to her love of history and a gift for storytelling. She also credits the discipline learned through a background in journalism and scheduling writing time around diaper changes, Scout meetings, band lessons and outings to the Zoo Boo . . . and, of course, OCD. The due date for her third book and her second son were on the same day . . . and both were early! When on deadline, she turns on the laptop between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. to get a chapter in before work.

While the pace is often hectic, Gideon, a Gemini, enjoys tackling diverse projects. One month it’s researching the gritty existence of 1880’s Texas Rangers only to jump to modern themes of intrigue and possibly a legal thriller or two. Then, it’s back to the shadowy netherworld of shape shifters, vampires and movie serial killers. When not working on her latest plot twist before sunrise or arranging medical depositions, she enjoys indulging in Netflix, hosting her critique group, and feeding a variety of wildlife on her fourth-floor balcony including a yearly family of raccoons. And, of course, reading.

About this Book:

A gentle lady held hostage in a deadly play for power, Kendra Terriot’s only means of survival for herself and her family is to play to a careful courtship game. The one she chooses from the dangerous Terriot heirs will inherit the coveted crown, but the one she longs to have rescue her belongs to another.

Favored son of their cruel Shifter leader, the only calm in Cale Terriot’s necessarily violent life is his childhood love for his delicate distant cousin whom he’s pledged to make his queen. With Kendra at his side, he knows he can become the kind of ruler his clan needs, but first he must learn how to become the kind of mate she desires.

In a treacherous race for control, where weakness means death, Cale must prove he’s not the beast his beauty fears and still protect her, especially once her chosen love returns to free her. The only way to win her respect could mean surrendering his throne. The only way to win her heart could mean letting her go.

Despising each other from the start, Kaddy is determined to undermine whatever intentions he has until she learns of a destiny she never asked for. The fate of the world lies in her hands as she learns how different she really is. The only person she can turn to for answers is the last person she’d want help from: Cole Huntington who seems to dislike her rule-breaking as much as she dislikes his rule-following.

Supernatural Smack Down: Nicole Peeler’s Jane True

May 25th, 2013 Kristie Posted in Supernatural Smack Down Comments Off on Supernatural Smack Down: Nicole Peeler’s Jane True

Jane True

Name: Jane True

Book Series: The Jane True Series

Job: Book Clerk/Secret Night Swimmer

Height: 5’2″

Weight: 135

Hair Color: Black

Eye Color: Black

From (Location): Rockabill, Maine

Significant Other: It’s complicated

Signature Move: fainting

Kill Highlights: Ummmmmmm………. I like to kill a tuna melt?

Enemies: Loads, unfortunately.

Favorite Pastime: It used to be basking on a rock. Now it’s basking on a man.

Other Facts: I’m part selkie!

Hey folks! Jane True here. I’m the protagonist of my own series, published by Orbit Books. I’m half-selkie, which is a seal-shapeshifter, but I had no idea I was part supernatural until just recently. You can read all about that in my first book, Tempest Rising. I’ve come a long way since then, and my sixth and final book is about to come out in a few days, called Tempest Reborn. So if you like gulping down a whole series in one big swig, you’re in luck! My books have lots of humor, tuna melts, hot dudes, some naughtiness, and I fall down quite a bit. I’m not very kickass, especially to start, but I’m half-seal, so don’t judge. That said, I’ve gotten stronger, and I have a knack for getting out of a scrape–usually with the other person the worse off for wear.

About Nicole:

Nicole D. Peeler received an undergraduate degree in English Literature from Boston University, and a PhD in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh, in Scotland. She’s lived abroad in both Spain and the UK, and all over the USA. Currently, she resides outside Pittsburgh, to teach in Seton Hill’s MFA in Popular Fiction. When she’s not in the classroom infecting young minds with her madness, she’s writing Urban Fantasy for Orbit Books and taking pleasure in what means most to her: family, friends, food, and travel.

Supernatural Smack Down: Bec McMaster’s Will Carver

May 24th, 2013 Kristie Posted in Supernatural Smack Down 21 Comments »

Will Carver

Name: Will Carver

Book Series: London Steampunk

Job: The Devil of Whitechapel’s bodyguard and all-round enforcer. Keepin’ the streets of Whitechapel safe and making sure the blue bloods of the Echelon don’t dare enter.

Height: 6’5″

Weight: 270lbs of pure muscle

Hair Color: Shoulder-length, tawny brown

Eye Color: Amber – shines gold when his ‘beast’ is in ascendancy

From (Location): Whitechapel, London

Significant Other: He doesn’t have a significant other. However, the flirtatious Lena Todd drives him halfway to Bedlam.

Signature Move: To rend. He’s verwulfen, which means he’s physically stronger and faster than any other mortal being, and impossible to control when he goes into the state known as berserkergang. Sound a little familiar? Vikings anyone? When they’re in such a state, verwulfen are impervious to pain or injury and have been known to walk through fire. If you know what’s good for you, get the hell out of the way.

Kill Highlights: Doesn’t bother to remember. A dead enemy’s no longer an enemy and he doesn’t give a shit about trophies.

Enemies: Any blue blood apart from Blade, the Devil of Whitechapel.

Favorite Pastime: Making sure a certain brunette keeps her fingers out of trouble, avoiding said brunette and patrolling the rookeries for threats.

Caught the loupe at the age of five when me mother sold me to a travellin’ showman. Spent most of me life in a cage, being stabbed with cold iron to prove how well I could heal for the audience, so you better be sure your first strike’s good and true ‘cos you won’t get another. And now I’m out of the cage… Let’s just say, I don’t believe in holdin’ anythin’ back.

Do I think it will be tough? When you come from streets where you’re as likely to get a shiv in the back or get roasted by one o’ the Echelon’s automaton spitfires, then this is child’s play. I don’t kill for sport, but that ain’t goin’ to slow me down none and Blade’s been teachin’ me all about buildin’ a reputation, makin’ others wary of you. That’s why I’m enterin’ this so-called contest.

Some might say I’ve already earned that reputation. They don’t call me the Beast of Whitechapel for nothin’. But I says you can never be too careful.

Extract from Heart of Iron:

Will crawled out of the water with a snarl, his hands coated with grease and blood and a steel tentacle in his fist. His ears still rang and the pain in his cheek told him he might have broken something. Fury boiled in his blood, along with the creeping lassitude of the aftermath of a rousing fight. He ignored it.

Forcing himself to his feet, he stared down at the limp steel tentacle. Whatever the hell that had been, it was vicious. He’d barely found himself in the water before it was on him, steel limbs thrashing and reaching for him.

He couldn’t remember much of the fight – he never could, really, beyond flashing images of sight and sound – but he could vaguely recall the gaping maw that sucked in water to fuel its steam-driven core, and the razor-sharp threshing blades of its teeth. Smashing his fist straight through the thin steel sheeting of its body. The burning exhale of steam in his face as he tore a tentacle off it, using the weakness of the rivets to his own advantage.

That was where inventors made their fatal flaw with the metal monsters and automatons they created. For a metaljacket, it was the hinge of their knees and arms; for the steel-squid, it was the segmented join of the tentacles to its body. Tear that apart and all you had was a wounded shell that flopped around like a turtle on its back.

Destroying it hadn’t been without cost however.

Will staggered against a stalactite and pressed a hand to his side. His fingers came away sticky, a result of those iron teeth. Every muscle in his body throbbed with the ache of the fall and the way the smooth surface of the water had felt like he plunged onto heavy cobbles.

He wanted to stumble to the ground and sleep away the hurt. A fatal weakness for his species. Almost unstoppable once they were in a full fury, barely cognizant of injury or pain, verwulfen dropped like stones after the excitement wore off.

Will wiped the blood out of his eyes and staggered forward. Couldn’t sleep. Not yet. Lena was out there. He’d heard her scream as he plunged toward the water, heard the soul-shattering loss in her voice as she cried out.

Whoever had her – and he was starting to get an idea of their identity – they were going to wish they’d never dared touch his woman…

For a sneak peek at the London Steampunk world, I’m offering an e-novella called Tarnished Knight (set after Kiss of Steel and before Heart of Iron) for free download for the month of May. See here for details.

About this Book:

In Victorian London, if you’re not a blue blood of the Echelon then you’re nothing at all. The Great Houses rule the city with an iron fist, imposing their strict ‘blood taxes’ on the nation, and the Queen is merely a puppet on a string…

Lena Todd makes the perfect spy. Nobody suspects the flirtatious debutante could be a sympathizer for the humanist movement haunting London’s vicious blue blood elite. Not even the ruthless Will Carver, the one man she can’t twist around her little finger, and the one man whose kiss she can’t forget…

Stricken with the loupe and considered little more than a slave-without-a-collar to the blue bloods, Will wants nothing to do with the Echelon or the dangerous beauty who drives him to the very edge of control. But when he finds a coded letter on Lena—a code that matches one he saw on a fire-bombing suspect—he realizes she’s in trouble. To protect her, he must seduce the truth from her.

With the humanists looking to start a war with the Echelon, Lena and Will must race against time—and an automaton army—to stop the humanist plot before it’s too late. But as they fight to save a city on the brink of revolution, the greatest danger might just be to their hearts…
