Taking Cover: 18 Hot New Titles!

I have another round of great covers for everyone this week.  First up is Torn by Erica O’Rourke, which is the first book in her new series.  The book is scheduled to be released on June 28, 2011.  This cover is a bit off, but I liked it.  I’m also intrigued by the short synopsis.

Synopsis (Product Description):

TORN-Golden Heart winner Erica O’Rourke’s debut paranormal trilogy, in which a girl must choose between two guys and two equally dangerous worlds: mob-connected Chicago and a magical underground society in New Orleans.

Here is the cover art for Beautiful Days by Anna Godbersen, which is the second book in her Bright Young Things series.  The book is scheduled to be released on September 20, 2011.  I think this is a gorgeous period piece cover.  I’ve also heard good things about the first book in the series.

Kimberly Derting unveiled the beautiful cover art for The Pledge, which is the first book in her new series.  The book is scheduled to be released on November 15, 2011.  I really love this cover.  It’s one of my favorite from 2011.  The synopsis has me hooked and Ms. Derting is definitely on my auto buy list.  If you haven’t read The Body Finder novels, you simply MUST.

Synopsis (Product Description):

In the violent country of Ludania, the classes are strictly divided by the language they speak. The smallest transgression, like looking a member of a higher class in the eye while they are speaking their native tongue, results in immediate execution. Seventeen-year-old Charlaina has always been able to understand the languages of all classes, and she’s spent her life trying to hide her secret. The only place she can really be free is the drug-fueled underground clubs where people go to shake off the oppressive rules of the world they live in. It’s there that she meets a beautiful and mysterious boy named Max who speaks a language she’s never heard before . . . and her secret is almost exposed.

Charlie is intensely attracted to Max, even though she can’t be sure where his real loyalties lie. As the emergency drills give way to real crisis and the violence escalates, it becomes clear that Charlie is the key to something much bigger: her country’s only chance for freedom from the terrible power of a deadly regime.

Hollywood Crush unveiled the cover art for Beautiful Chaos, which is the third book in the Caster Chronicles series.  The book is scheduled to be released on October 18, 2011.  I think the first cover is still my favorite.

Lisa Mantchev unveiled the cover art for So Silver Bright, which is the third book in her Theatre Illuminata series.  The book is scheduled to be released on September 13, 2011.  The cover art for this series is truly amazing.  I’ve bought the first two books, but haven’t had a chance to read them yet.

Synopsis (Product Description):

Things are never easy for Beatrice Shakespeare Smith. Something’s happened to the Théâtre Illuminata, putting the only home she’s ever known in limbo. Her mother’s sanity is fraying under the strain, her father has vanished and an angry goddess is out for revenge. Bertie is caught between her duties and her dreams, just as her heart is torn between Ariel and Nate. But hope glimmers in a Distant Castle, and if Bertie can put on the performance of her life, maybe she can win the magical boon that may save them all.

Victoria Schwab released the final cover art for The Near Witch, which is her debut release.  The book is scheduled to be released on August 2, 2011.  The cover is a bit understated, but I like it.  I’m looking forward to reading this one.

Synopsis (Product Description):

The Near Witch is only an old story told to frighten children.

If the wind calls at night, you must not listen. The wind is lonely, and always looking for company.

And there are no strangers in the town of Near.

These are the truths that Lexi has heard all her life.

But when an actual stranger—a boy who seems to fade like smoke—appears outside her home on the moor at night, she knows that at least one of these sayings is no longer true.

The next night, the children of Near start disappearing from their beds, and the mysterious boy falls under suspicion. Still, he insists on helping Lexi search for them. Something tells her she can trust him.

As the hunt for the children intensifies, so does Lexi’s need to know—about the witch that just might be more than a bedtime story, about the wind that seems to speak through the walls at night, and about the history of this nameless boy.

Part fairy tale, part love story, Victoria Schwab’s debut novel is entirely original yet achingly familiar: a song you heard long ago, a whisper carried by the wind, and a dream you won’t soon forget.

Alyson Noel showed off the cover art for Everlasting, which is the final book in her The Immortals series.  The book is scheduled to be released on June 7, 2011.  I think Evermore and Dark Flame are probably the best covers in the series.

Synopsis (Product Description):

Ever and Damen have spent centuries facing down bitter rivals, jealous friends and their own worst fears-all in the hope of being together forever. Here is the new cover art for Blood Law by Karin Tabke, which is the first book in her new Blood Moon Trilogy.  The book is scheduled to be released on May 3, 2011.  Both covers are great, but I really like the newest cover.

Old Cover

Synopsis (Product Description):

For all eternity, only one thing shall separate them—until the Blood Law is avenged…

The coming of the Blood Moon will lead two Lycan packs into war, spur two rival brothers into conflict, and spark an act of vengeance so evil that its effects will be felt for generations.

One woman stands at the center of it all…

As undisputed Alpha, Rafael must choose a life mate to preserve the dominance of his Lycan pack. He never suspected, his mate would be a human, the same wounded, girl-woman he seduces from the brink of death. Falon is a dangerous combination of Lycan and Slayer—beings bred to destroy his kind. Even more, she’s a mesmerizing beauty whose sensuality tempts the seasoned warrior to take unnecessary risks. The primal heat between them is irresistible, yet surrendering to it could destroy them both…for a vengeful foe stands ready in the shadows to fulfill what is rightfully his by Blood Law.

Here is the cover art for Chosen by Fate by Virna DePaul, which is the second book in her Para Ops series.  The first book in the series, Chosen by Blood, releases on May 3, 2011.  I like both covers, but I think the first one is a bit better.  The heroine seems to have a sort of blue tint to her skin.  Chosen by Fate will hit shelves on October 4, 2011.

In which a girl must grapple with the sudden emergence of otherwoldly powers and the repercussions of resurrecting her dead boyfriend.

Here is the cover art for Conspiracies by Mercedes Lackey and Rosemary Edghill, which is the second book in the Shadow Grail series.  Nice cover, but I like the more urban fantasy feel of the first cover.  The book is scheduled to be released on July 5, 2011.

Synopsis (Product Description):

The second book in the Shadow Grail series by the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestselling authors Mercedes Lackey and Rosemary Edghill

Jennifer Estep unveiled the cover at for Touch of Frost, which is the first book in her new Mythos Academy series.  The book is scheduled to be released on July 26, 2011.  I’m really looking forward to reading this one.  The cover is pretty awesome and the premise of this series sounds fantastic.

Synopsis (Product Description):

My name is Gwen Frost, and I go to Mythos Academy — a school of myths, magic and warrior whiz kids, where even the lowliest geek knows how to chop off somebody’s head with a sword and Logan Quinn, the hottest Spartan guy in school, also happens to be the deadliest.

But lately, things have been weird, even for Mythos. First, mean girl Jasmine Ashton was murdered in the Library of Antiquities. Then, someone stole the Bowl of Tears, a magical artifact that can be used to bring about the second Chaos War. You know, death, destruction and lots of other bad, bad things. Freaky stuff like this goes on all the time at Mythos, but I’m determined to find out who killed Jasmine and why – especially since I should have been the one who died…

Here is the cover art for Unnatural by Michael Griffo, which is the first book in his new Archangel Academy series.  The book was recently released on February 22, 2011.  Sounds like a pretty interesting premise.

Synopsis (Product Description):

In the town of Eden in northwestern England stands the exclusive boarding school known as Archangel Academy. Ancient and imposing, it’s a place filled with secrets. Just like its students…

For Michael Howard, being plucked from his Nebraska hometown and sent thousands of miles away is as close as he’s ever come to a miracle. In Weeping Water, he felt trapped, alone. At Archangel Academy, Michael belongs. And in Ciaran, Penry, and especially Ciaran’s enigmatic half-brother Ronan, Michael finds friendship deeper than he’s ever known.

But Michael’s only beginning to understand what makes the Academy so special. Ronan is a vampire—part of a hybrid clan who are outcasts even among other vampires. Within the Academy’s confines exists a ruthless world of deadly rivalries and shifting alliances, of clandestine love and forbidden temptations. And soon Michael will confront the destiny that brought him here—and a danger more powerful than he can imagine…

Karen Mahoney showed off the cover art for the Wicked Pretty Things anthology, which is scheduled to be released on September 22, 2011.  This anthology has another great lineup with dark faerie tales.  What’s not to love?  The competition is going to be tough this year, but this cover will surely get my vote for the Best Anthology category in the cover art awards.

Synopsis (Product Description):

13 Tales of Twisted Faeries on the Dark Side. These are dirty, sticky and sweet stories with a Melissa Marr-ish slant, beautifully crafted and filled with alluring romance, heart-stopping danger, magic, and dark intrigue. These are modern, urban, ‘tattooed’ stories, not retellings of fairy tales, about beautiful, dangerous fey, or fairies and the mortals who hunger for them.

Robinson Wells unveiled the cover art for Variant, this I think is the first installment in his new series.  The book is scheduled to be released on October 18, 2011. The book is billed as a dystopian thriller, a modern-day Lord of the Files, set at a boarding school where not everything is as it seems and every day is a fight for survival.  The cover doesn’t really give me that dystopian feel.

Synopsis (Product Description):

Benson Fisher thought a scholarship to Maxfield Academy would be the ticket out of his dead-end life.

He was wrong.

Now he’s trapped in a school that’s surrounded by a razor-wire fence. A school where video cameras monitor his every move. Where there are no adults. Where the kids have split into groups in order to survive.

Where breaking the rules equals death.

But when Benson stumbles upon the school’s real secret, he realizes that playing by the rules could spell a fate worse than death, and that escape—his only real hope for survival—may be impossible.

Here is the cover art for Wherever You Go by Heather Davis.  The book is scheduled to be released on November 14, 2011.  This sounds like such a sad and heavy story, but I like ghost stories.  Definitely intrigued by the synopsis, so I have to give it a read.

Synopsis (Product Description):

Seventeen-year-old Holly Mullen has felt lost and lonely ever since her boyfriend, Rob, died in a tragic accident. The fact that she has to spend most of her free time caring for her little sister and Alzheimer’s-stricken grandfather doesn’t help. But Holly has no idea that as she goes about her days, Rob’s ghost is watching over her. He isn’t happy when he sees his best friend, Jason, reach out to help Holly with her grandfather—but as a ghost, he can do nothing to stop it. Is his best friend really falling for his girlfriend?

As Holly wonders whether to open her heart to Jason, the past comes back to haunt her. Her grandfather claims to be communicating with the ghost of Rob. Could the messages he has for Holly be real? And if so, how can the loved ones Rob left behind help his tortured soul make it to the other side?

Told from the perspectives of Holly, Jason, and Rob, Wherever You Go is is a poignant story about making peace with the past, opening your heart to love, and finding the courage to move forward into the light.
