Liv held her ground as the dark fey advanced, his black hair lifting like a halo about his head as it danced in an unfelt wind. The scent of ozone tickled her nostrils, the hair on her forearms rising as some kind of strange energy built up around the man—creature—whose eyes were bleeding into an oddly mesmerizing shade she found it impossible to look away from.
“Brave words, little girl. They will not serve you here.”
“Don’t be too sure,” she snapped, fingers tightening around the talisman. So, its power would backfire here? Perhaps that was to her advantage. “What’s up with that hair? Maybe it’s fey—maybe it’s Maybelline?”
Aodh hissed, the glitter of power deep in his eyes sparking as his feet left the ground.
“Hold your tongue, girl—lest you wish it taken from you.”
Nana Rose spoke of the fey and their powers when Liv was young, telling her stories of how the creatures could only be turned away by that which was anathema to their existence.
Her fingers tightened on the talisman.
“You want me? Come and get me,” she taunted.
Aodh swept forward as though on wings, his arms spread to catch her. Though her heart leapt to her throat, she did the only thing she could think of.
She lifted the iron talisman to meet his charge, pressing it against the bare flesh above the collar of his tunic just as he came within reach and fingers tipped with wicked talons brushed her cheeks.
The sound was unearthly. Wyatt and Liv clutched their ears, crying out as the fey clenched his fists at his sides and tilted his head back, his full-throated cry of agony echoing through the tunnels.
