“At least we’d be underground instead of up here where everyone and his mother can see us,” Alice retorted.
Olivia gave up trying to brush the dirt off herself. She looked like a carrot that had been pulled from the ground. “Both of you hold on—you better tell me what’s going on here.”
“We were desperate, Olivia,” Wyatt said. “Jane was in a car accident this morning. She’s in the hospital can’t perform the Winter Solstice ritual.”
“We had to find out if you had the power Rose claimed you did,” Alice agreed. “So we threw you in the deep end to see if you gave Aodh the book or if you fought back.”
“You two have been working together from the beginning?” Olivia asked.
Alice sniffed. “Of course! Who goes home their second weekend of college? You needed time to trust Wyatt over the past few months. We weren’t going to push you into the deep end this fast, but now we don’t have a choice.”
Olivia steeled herself to hear what she had avoided for so long. “So what am I?”
“Olivia, you’re a Guardian,” Wyatt said. “Pre-history humans had no chance against the fey until some human-fey hybrids were born with enough power and will to protect themselves and force the fey underground where they can’t prey on us.”
Alice nodded. “You’ve prided yourself on your bravery, your risk-taking. But Rose says every time she tried to induct you, you wouldn’t listen. You ran away from home to get away from her, to get away from your heritage. But it didn’t work, did it? You wouldn’t have been drawn to Wyatt if you were just an ordinary human girl who wanted an ordinary human existence.”
An odd popping sound like ice breaking shattered the silence. Trolls began emerging from the ground around them, growing like twisted petunias on fast-forward. Then the earth shook beneath her feet. Something bigger was coming…
“Hurry, Olivia,” Alice urged. “We’ve punched a hole in the net. If Aodh is unleashed, things will get very ugly.”
Suddenly the trolls didn’t look as small as they had underground. Their teeth glistened in the moonlight as they growled at her.
Olivia couldn’t run away any longer. She held out her hand. “Give me that damn book!”
