*Visit All Things Urban Fantasy today for her Deadly Destination tour of Carolyn Crane’s Midcity from Carter & a chance to win the WILD & STEAMY ANTHOLOGY**
Our Deadly Destinations guided tours officially end tomorrow. Be sure to take a look at all of our previous locations. Today’s Deadly Destinations tour is from Caitlin Kittredge. Caitlin has a story in the THE WIDE SIDE ANTHOLOGY (available on August 2nd from Baen Books) that takes us through some forgotten places. Thanks to Caitlin, one of you who comment on this post will win a copy of the book! See details below.
They’re dead places, those ones you pass by without stopping. Ghost places, places forgotten both by their owners and the world outside. Abandoned gas stations, pumps on their sides, rusted sentries of the crossroads. Empty roadhouses, chairs pulled back and waiting for nightfall, when you can still hear the echoes of the jukebox amid the cobwebs and the ghosts. Tumbledown farmhouses, reclaimed by the green around them, the only think to poke above the horizon for miles in every direction. Nobody would hear the screams from the pole barn, more wreckage than structure, now. Nobody would even know you were there.
This the world that Sam inhabits in my short story from The Wild Side, “Born Under a Bad Sign”. A world of back roads, state highways, forgotten places. Places that a normal sort of person would pass by without a second thought. Places that have rotted away and been forgotten since the advent of the interstate, left by the wayside much like Sam herself, a fallen angel stranded in rural Kansas, faced with evil that’s beyond her own now-mortal capacity to defeat.
It’s not a single place, and it’s not a place anyone would go to willingly. You take a wrong turn, you end up on a dirt road, potholes scraping your undercarriage, and find dark farmhouse on a dead end with a single light burning in a high window. You come to a crossroads in the geographic middle of nowhere, only a single buckshot-pocked sign giving you distances to towns you can no longer make out the names of. It’s happened to all of us sooner or later—a wrong turn. A crossroads at twilight. A venture off the beaten path to investigate the spoils of a broken-down building. Usually we return to the interstate, the smooth glide and the glow of headlights, but sometimes we don’t make it. Sometimes what opens the farmhouse door isn’t looking to help us. Sometimes the devil of the crossroads makes himself known, and asks you if you’ll stay awhile.
It’s up to you what your response will be, but for Sam, it’s already too late.
Caitlin Kittredge is the author of both young adult and adult fantasy novels and short fiction, including the Black London series and the acclaimed Iron Codex trilogy, hailed as “the next Hunger Games”. She’s in the process of writing Running With the Devil, a novel featuring many of the characters from “Born Under a Bad Sign”. You can find her daily ramblings and occasional fits of geekery on Twitter, and more information about all her books at her website.
