Deadly Destinations: Carrie Vaughn’s Kitty takes on San Francisco

**Visit All Things Urban Fantasy today for her Deadly Destination tour of Allison Van Diepen’s Otherworld Chicago from Alexander Banks & a chance to win THE VAMPIRE STALKER**

Next up on our Deadly Destinations vacation tours is San Francisco.  Carrie Vaughn is here to give us a tour of San Francisco’s Chinatown, the backdrop of Kitty Norville’s latest adventure in Kitty’s Big TroubleTor Books has generously provided five copies of the book for those who comment on this post.  See details below.

Deciding What’s Real

by Carrie Vaughn

I like sending my main character, Kitty, to new places.  It means I get to learn about new places, and even sometimes travel there myself (all in the name of research, of course).  Next stop on the tour:  in Kitty’s Big Trouble, Kitty goes to San Francisco’s Chinatown.

Chinatown is iconic.  It’s been iconic for more than a hundred years.  Which raises the question:  where do you even begin?  It’s a top tourist destination, but it’s also a real neighborhood where people live and work, and where Chinese and American cultures have collided and mingled and thrived.  The dim sum, the junk shops, the red paper lanterns, the dragon lampposts, the fortune cookie factories, the temples, and all the ordinary businesses you’d find on any street.  Unfortunately, writing about such a culturally and historical rich location means leaving a lot out — this is meant to be a thrilling tale of adventure, not a travelogue.  Also, because this is fantasy, I can put stuff in that maybe doesn’t exist in the real world.

Like the tunnels.

I read so much conflicting information on the tunnels of Chinatown, of course I had to include them in the novel.  Some people believe a network of forgotten tunnels lie under the streets of Chinatown.  Historically, there’s good evidence that tunnels did exist, and that the residents of the neighborhood used them to evade the often-hostile authorities.  However, whatever form they took, these tunnels were destroyed in the 1906 earthquake.  These days, a few people continue to insist that tunnels still exist, and are full of ghosts and other paranormal weirdness.  Real evidence is spotty, however.  What I believe:  a tunnel system doesn’t really exist, not in the way the urban legends tell.  Which is why the tunnels I depict in Kitty’s Big Trouble are clearly magical — only people with the right key, the right knowledge, can get in.  Which I personally think makes them even cooler than the urban legends, but I’m biased.

This is one of the things I love about writing fantasy:  I can pick and choose what’s real and what isn’t.  I can take what I think is cool and find a way for it to exist.  But I also try to include a bit of commentary by addressing the fact that most people don’t believe they exist at all.  This is a real place, and I have to acknowledge that.  I’m a stranger to Chinatown.  I read a few books about it and spent only a day there.  I have to strike a balance between writing about what I think is cool, and being respectful of the real-world people, culture, religion, and folklore I used as inspiration in populating my own fictional Chinatown.  I hope I did all right.

Disclaimer:  I might have taken inspiration from the title, but rest assured that Kitty’s Big Trouble has absolutely no resemblance to the movie, Big Trouble in Little China.  I watched it again, just to make sure.

About Carrie:

The phrase “Air Force Brat” sums up most of my childhood. When I was born in January 1973, my father was co-piloting a B-52 all over southeast Asia and my mother was having her umpteenth nervous breakdown at Mather Air Force Base near Sacramento, California. That explains so much, doesn’t it? Both of my parents must be credited with my current career path: my mother gave me Heinlein’s Red Planet when I was eight. Shortly thereafter my father sat me down to watch 2001. My brain just hasn’t been the same.

I was a high school valedictorian (tied with five others–it was that kind of high school) and received a BA from Occidental College in Los Angeles (I went there the same time as Ben Affleck, but I never met him, much to my anguish.) I lived in York, UK, for my junior year abroad (ask the Freaksoc crowd about the time I was the Goddess of the River Ouse). I’ve worked as a Renaissance Festival counter wench, a theater usher, an editor, a buyer at an independent bookstore, and as the ever-popular ‘administrative assistant.’ I went back to school. (University of Colorado at Boulder this time.) Once, I was the student. Now, I am the Master. (“Only a Master of English, Carrie.”) Doh!

In 1998, I attended the Odyssey Fantasy Writing Workshop, a six-week long summer workshop directed by Jeanne Cavelos.

I live in Boulder, Colorado, and I still have to do my own laundry.

When I was about six and my little brother Robbie was four, I threw a coffee can at him in the sandbox. Smacked him right on the head. I didn’t mean to. He had to have stitches. Now that his hairline is receding, the scar is becoming visible. I knew I was never going to live that one down.

Five winners will each receive a copy of Kitty’s Big Trouble by Carrie Vaughn

Available on June 28, 2011 from Tor Books

About the Book:

Kitty Norville is back and in more trouble than ever.  Her recent run-in with werewolves traumatized by the horrors of war has made her start wondering how long the US government might have been covertly using werewolves in combat. Have any famous names in our own history might have actually been supernatural?  She’s got suspicions about William Tecumseh Sherman.  Then an interview with the right vampire puts her on the trail of Wyatt Earp, vampire hunter.

But her investigations lead her to a clue about enigmatic vampire Roman and the mysterious Long Game played by vampires through the millennia.  That, plus a call for help from a powerful vampire ally in San Francisco, suddenly puts Kitty and her friends on the supernatural chessboard, pieces in dangerously active play.  And Kitty Norville is never content to be a pawn. . . .

I love love love the Kitty Norville series. She is one of my favorite U.F. heroines. She’s funny and tough and she has a heart of gold. I always like it when Kitty steps out of Denver for awhile, and I can’t wait to see her in San Francisco. Although I had read all the Kitty books I had never saw a picture of Ms. Vaughn I had no idea she resembled Kitty so much, they must be related ;)

Great post. I love the idea of being in Chinatown. It is rarely used. I do understand the Big Trouble in Little China thing, but it really isn’t that similar. I haven’t started this series, but they are in the library queue. Man I love this, being able to go all over the place is nice. It is unique in UF, well in a lot of books, they usually stay in one place. It is not bad, but still, I like something different. Great post and giveaway guys. Thank you :)
