Deadly Destinations takes a tour of Chloe Neill’s Chicago with a list of many places to visit while in the city. The eighth novel in the urban fantasy Chicagoland Vampires series, Biting Bad, will be released on August 5, 2013 from NAL Penguin.
“Come and show me another city with lifted head singing so proud to be alive and coarse and strong and cunning.”
Carl Sandburg, Chicago
Chicago is a very strange place. A place of contradictions. From gorgeous architecture and magnificent parks to cruel poverty and shocking violence.
But the vampires of three American Houses — Cadogan, Navarre, and Grey — make their homes in the Second City, and believe it second to none.
Cadogan House makes its home in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood, which is also home to the University of Chicago, where Cadogan’s Sentinel, Merit studied medieval literature.
Grey House is new to the scene, and it’s younger Master, Scott Grey, preferred the energy of Chicago’s Wrigleyville neighborhood, building a home for his vampires in a converted warehouse.
Vampires aren’t, of course, the only supernaturals in Chicago. The River Nymphs make their home in various enclaves along the branches of the Chicago River, including Goose Island, the only island in the river.
Trolls make their homes beneath the bascule bridges that cross the river, and the shifters of the North American Central Pack fraternize at a bar in the city’s historic Ukrainian Village neighborhood.
Considering its contradictions, it’s not hard to imagine the variety of magical beings that haunt the city’s streets and allies, and that live and love in the townhouses, condos, and mansions.
And that’s not even mentioning the things that roam the underground.
Thanks for reading!
Chloe Neill is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Chicagoland Vampires and Dark Elite series.
She was born and raised in the South, but now makes her home in the Midwest–just close enough to Cadogan House and St. Sophia’s to keep an eye on things. When not transcribing Merit’s and Lily’s adventures, she bakes, works, and scours the Internet for good recipes and great graphic design. Chloe also maintains her sanity by spending time with her boys–her favorite landscape photographer/husband and their dogs, Baxter and Scout. (Both she and the photographer understand the dogs are in charge.)

About this Book:
Merit has been a vampire for only a short while, but she’s already seen a lifetime’s worth of trouble. She and her Master, centuries-old Ethan Sullivan, have risked their lives time and again to save the city they love. But not all of Chicago is loving them back.
Anti-vampire riots are erupting all over town, striking vampires where it hurts the most. A splinter group armed with Molotov cocktails and deep-seated hate is intent on clearing the fanged from the Windy City come hell or high water.
Merit and her allies rush to figure out who’s behind the attacks, who will be targeted next, and whether there’s any way to stop the wanton destruction. The battle for Chicago is just beginning, and Merit is running out of time.
