**Visit All Things Urban Fantasy today for her Deadly Destination tour of Club Eden from Andrea Cremer & a chance to win WOLFSBANE**
Today’s Deadly Destination takes us to an unusual and shifting world layered over our own. Dawn Metcalf’s Consuela is here to give us a tour of the Flow. You can read about Consuela’s unique ability to shed skins and more about the Flow in Luminous, which was released on June 30, 2011. Thanks to Penguin Group/Dutton, one of you who comment on this post will win a copy of the book! See details below.
There’s a door.
“Oh, hi! Come on in. Good to meet you! Have a seat.
“My name’s Consuela, but around here, folks call me ‘Bones’. The blond girl over by the computer is Sissy. Say hi, Sissy! Um…sorry, she’s a bit distracted right now. She lost something important and trying to track it down through UPS. This could take a while. Is it okay if I give you the tour? Great. Come on, follow me.
“What? Oh. Well, let me just say that I’m never going to use the phrase ‘I’d give my right arm’ for something again! This way.
“Oops. Um…don’t worry, Sissy’s office always opens up into a wildflower field. You don’t have allergies, do you? Just step right over the threshold and there—see? No problem. Everything here sort of exists right next to each other so it’s easy to get around and real easy to get lost, so it’s important to travel slow at first. You’ll get the hang of the Flow soon enough. That’s what we call this place: the Flow. Why? Good question. I guess because everything flows from one thing to the next. It’s kind of fluid and hard to explain, but just step where I step and you’ll do fine. Ready? One, two, three.
“Whoa, steady! Ha ha! Still in one piece? This is one of my favorite places to hang out: palm trees, warm breeze, white sun chairs, and if you go behind that counter with all the fluffy towels? There’s a bottle of suntan lotion that smells like pineapples. I like to sit in the sunshine, just soak it up. And the best part? It never changes. No, really. There’ll always be a half-bottle of suntan oil, there will always be piles of fluffy, folded towels and there will always be sunshine with a light breeze. In this corner of the Flow, anyway. Sorry, no sunglasses. Too bright? No problem! I know just where to go. You ready to travel? This way…
“Here we go: I think this is Phoenix at night. Or at least what Phoenix would look like if there wasn’t anybody downtown, but the lights of the city are nice against the dark sky and trust me, you don’t get to see this many stars over Chicago—too much light pollution. That’s where I’m from, originally. The Flow is sort of…everywhere. And nowhere. I know that doesn’t make sense, but the Flow isn’t really part of the world, more like another world running alongside it, but some people—like you and me and Sissy—we can cross over. That’s why we’re here: to keep people from dying before their time.
“Woops! Didn’t mean to freak you out. Sorry! I’m not really the one to do this intro thing. That’s usually Sissy. She’s the Watcher, which means she keeps track of all of us in the Flow. There’s a guy, Abacus; he’s trying to make a map of all the people we’re help but, honestly, when he talks, it hurts my head. Want to see what I mean? Check this out…
“Okay. Stop. You see that, there? That big hill made of crystals? That’s Abacus’ place. He actually made it out of the Flow. I have no idea how. It’s just…there. Most of the places here are pieces of our old world, places we brought with us when we crossed over here and then they just sort of stay. So if you have a favorite place to hang out—the beach, a park, a playground, a forest at night…there’s probably something like that around. But be careful, because there’s a lot of other places too, places no one wants to see. Like the edge of the Flow itself? Brr. It gives me the creeps!
“So, last stop: ready for it? One, two… Hey, you’re getting good at this! Grab a plate and take anything you want. Can you believe someone brought the dining hall of a cruise ship? Best. Vacation. Ever! I highly recommend the chocolate mousse.”
I have no good excuse for the way I write. I lived in a normal, loving, suburban home, studied hard, went to college, went to graduate school, got married, had babies, and settled down in northern Connecticut. Despite this wholesome lifestyle, I was clearly corrupted by fairy tales, puppet visionaries, British humour and graphic novels. As a result, I write dark, quirky, and sometimes humorous speculative fiction.

About the Book:
As reality slips and time stands still, Consuela finds herself thrust into the world of the Flow. Removed from all she loves into this shifting world overlapping our own, Consuela quickly discovers she has the power to step out of her earthly skin and cloak herself in new ones-skins made from the world around her, crafted from water, fire, air. She is joined by other teens with extraordinary abilities, bound together to safeguard a world they can affect, but where they no longer belong.
When murder threatens to undo the Flow, the Watcher charges Consuela and elusive, attractive V to stop the killer. But the psychopath who threatens her new world may also hold the only key to Consuela’s way home.
