Do’s and Don’ts for Young Ladies Who Wish to Conceal Their Magical Natures in New England Ruled By the Brotherhood
DO pretend that you believe in obedience as the most important virtue a young lady can possess.
DON’T let them see you rolling your eyes.
DO pretend that you haven’t a thought in your head save what the Brothers, your father, or your husband put there.
DON’T let them catch you reading any forbidden books, or – Lord forbid – forming your own opinions.
DO speak of magic in hushed tones, behind closed doors.
DON’T ever let anyone hear you, at risk of being sent to the prison ship, the asylum, or worse.
DO smile and cast your eyes down demurely when Brothers speak to you.
DON’T smile too much, lest they think you’re a wanton harlot.
DO remember that a woman’s highest purpose is to bear children and be a comfort to her husband.
DON’T think about how your power could be used to overthrow the Brothers and save hundreds of girls like you.
DO recall that a young lady must be pure of heart, meek of spirit, and chaste of virtue.
DON’T wonder what it would be like to kiss the gardener, or perhaps see what he looks like without his shirt.
DO host a proper afternoon tea to show off your lovely new dresses and ladylike comportment.
DON’T invite the bluestocking bookseller – particularly after you’ve been kissing her son.
DO hire a governess to teach you the niceties of polite society and help you catch a husband.
DON’T fall in love with the governess. Such things are an abomination to the Brotherhood and would result in your immediate arrest, were they known.
DO find a suitable man to marry you well before your seventeenth birthday, or the Brothers will find one for you (and you’re unlikely to appreciate their choice.)
DON’T go falling in love with the town bookseller, currently moonlighting as your family’s gardener, who has no means of supporting a wife.
DO keep your temper at all times. It wouldn’t do for the Brothers to think you had a working mind of your own, much less an unruly tongue.
DON’T ever do magic. At least not in public. This one should be obvious.
Jessica Spotswood is the author of the Cahill Witch Chronicles: BORN WICKED (2012), STAR CURSED (June 2013), and untitled book 3 (summer 2014). She grew up in a tiny, one-stoplight town in Pennsylvania, where she could be found swimming, playing clarinet, memorizing lines for the school play, or – most often – with her nose in a book. Now Jess lives in Washington, DC with her playwright husband and a cuddly cat named Monkey. She can be found doing yoga, teaching writing workshops for teens, or – most often – with her nose in a book. Some things never change.

About this Book:
With the Brotherhood persecuting witches like never before, a divided Sisterhood desperately needs Cate to come into her Prophesied powers. And after Cate’s friend Sachi is arrested for using magic, a war-thirsty Sister offers to help her find answers—if Cate is willing to endanger everyone she loves.
Cate doesn’t want to be a weapon, and she doesn’t want to involve her friends and Finn in the Sisterhood’s schemes. But when Maura and Tess join the Sisterhood, Maura makes it clear that she’ll do whatever it takes to lead the witches to victory. Even if it means sacrifices. Even if it means overthrowing Cate. Even if it means all-out war.
In the highly anticipated sequel to Born Wicked, the Cahill Witch Chronicles continue Cate, Maura and Tess’s quest to find love, protect family, and explore their magic against all odds in an alternate history of New England.
