In Soul Taken, there are two Realms, the Living Realm where you and I are living out our existence, and the After Realm, the place where souls go when the human body dies. But how does a soul get from the Living to the After? This is one question that I had to ask myself when writing the beginning of The Life After trilogy.

When souls cross over to the After, a few are selected to “work” for the After beings (Caeleste, pronounced Kay-lest). The two main sets of “employees” are two the Guard, an elite force that protects human souls, and Soul Collectors. The main character in Soul Taken is Maggie, a Soul Collector who died at seventeen, but has been working for the After for over century.

A Collection starts with the removal of the True Soul from heavily guarded vaults in the After. The True Soul has many special abilities, one of them being the removal of a soul from its human body. The True Soul is given to the Collector who uses it as an After GPS device to find the soul in the Living Realm. The Soul Collector will locate the soul and body and reconnect them when the time is right. Sound easy? Not quite. Soul Collectors are trained in the art of removing a soul from the body with as little damage to it as possible.

Another cool thing about the True Soul is that it extracts data for our next step, Gate Seven. Imagine your after-life. Pearly gates? A bright blue sky with infinite clouds? Gate Seven is the transitional place between the Living and the After. A soul rests from its hard journey in a place where it feels the most at peace. And a Gate Keeper waits idly on the other side of the bridge between our realm and theirs until the soul is ready to cross over. This is where a Collectors job ends.

But what happens when a True Soul is stolen from the After vaults, and someone uses it to steal a very important soul? Read about Maggie’s journey to find the lost soul before an innocent girl is lost forever in my debut novel, Soul Taken.

Read a snippet from Soul Taken about one souls vision of Gate Seven:

A bit of pride welled within me as we safely arrived at Gate Seven, our final stop. The border between the Realms appeared as a bridge, which always remained the same even though the landscape changed. It appeared differently based on what the soul thought their after-life would look like, which meant we got to experience it with them. The True Soul extracted the image from the soul and projected it, easing the transition from the Living Realm to the After. Most souls imagined endless clouds, but many had other ideas.

Plush green grass filled the landscape as far as the eye could see. A setting sun appeared to rest atop a ridge of mountains in the distance. Joseph’s bridge connected two sides of a trickling stream. His soul heaved, as if it still needed oxygen, a leftover of breathing for fifty-six years.

On the other side of the bridge stood one of the Gatekeepers, Gwendolyn. Her radiant crimson hair ruffled in the wind. Her bright golden eyes sparkled against Joseph’s manifestation of the sun. She’d wait there until Joseph’s soul was ready to let go of its humanity and move on to the After.

I looked into the distance; more Gatekeepers stood on the other side of the border, waiting to welcome their souls. Even though Gate Seven was one place, each soul experienced it as if they were the only soul in existence.

I touched Dylan’s shoulder. “Time to go.”

Joseph knelt in the grass, staring into the distance. Maybe he’d visited this place at some point in his life. It was breathtaking. I took one last mental picture and transported away.
