Kitty Saves the World:  Let Me Tell You about Kitty’s Hometown

Carrie Vaughn

I thought I had a location I wanted to write about.  It’s a special place, very significant to the story in Kitty Saves the World.  A couple of years ago I even took a wonderful research trip there — incredibly helpful in writing the book.  I have pictures!

Then I realized that even mentioning this place before people had a chance to see the book would be a giant spoiler.  So I can’t do it.  Really sorry, guys.  I’d have loved to show you around and talk about what I saw on my trip.  But I want people to discover that on their own when they read the book.

Then I got to thinking:  I don’t think I’ve ever written about Kitty’s hometown of Denver, Colorado.  Kitty travels because I travel and I love talking about the new and fun locations I’ve been able to use for some of the previous novels, like London, Las Vegas, and San Francisco.  But what about Kitty’s own backyard?

Way back at the start, I based Kitty in Denver because it was the big city I knew best.  What I didn’t know wouldn’t be too hard to research — I live about an hour away.  What I didn’t realize then but found out quickly is that Denver is a great city for werewolves.

Moving from downtown outward:

Downtown Denver has world-class everything you could want from a major city.  Major museums, a performing arts center with opera, orchestra, theater, and everything in between, all four pro sports teams, a ton of restaurants and shopping, and all the stories that go along with a big downtown area.  Everything you need for, say, a bunch of exciting urban supernatural politics with global reach?  We’re covered.

Kitty Saves the World

Moving out:  A whole series of communities and suburbs with their own distinct personalities and characters.  The thing about the Denver suburbs — a hundred years ago, they were actually all different towns, and not just towns but old-west pioneer towns with all the histories — and ghost stories — that go along with them.  Mining, ranching, railroad stops, you name it.  Moosh all those fascinating little towns together, from Cherry Creek to Littleton to Wheat Ridge to Broomfield, and that’s Denver.  Any kind of story I want to tell, I can find a place for it.

I have to split us off in two directions now:

East of Denver:  Wide open spaces.  Seriously, unlike a lot of big cities (I’m looking at you, L.A.), Denver actually ends.  It trickles out into suburbs, but in less than an hour of driving from the heart of the city, you’ll be in farmland.  Wheat fields and tractors as far as you can you see.  And tucked in among the farmland and in protected parkland:  prairie.  Where the antelope really do play.  So imagine you’re a werewolf who wants to live in a city with all the perks and amenities that go with it.  But you’re a werewolf.  On full moon nights you’re really going to need someplace where you can stretch your legs and not get in trouble.  An hour east of Denver, a couple hundred miles of grassland stretch before you.

If you’d prefer a nice relaxing forest to run in?  Drive west an hour and you’ll be in the mountains, with a couple of hundred miles of pine trees and rocks and hills and hidey holes.

I love all these things.  I love going to the theater, I love having great museums nearby.  And I love hiking in the woods and taking mountain drives and sitting by rushing creeks to read a book.  I could wake up any morning of the week, decide to do any one of these things, and be doing it in an hour.  Personally, I feel like it’s an embarrassment of riches.  My life is full.

Story wise?  I can do anything.  Kitty can do anything because of where she lives.  And that made it awfully easy to write fourteen novels about her.

Thanks to Dark Faerie Tales for the chance to talk to you about Deadly Destinations!  If you’d like more information about the Kitty series and the rest of my writing, visit:  http://www.carrievaughn.com

West Denver sounds like my kind of place! I visited Boulder once on a high school trip, but I don’t remember much of it. :( I do however remember getting lost climbing one of the flatirons.

You know, Ive never really considered visiting Denver. I wouldn’t be opposed! ;) I don’t know if I would venture near any wolf packs – I’d probably get myself into all sorts of trouble.
