Deadly Destinations: Leslie Parrish’s Gabe Cooper on Savannah

*Visit All Things Urban Fantasy today for her Deadly Destination tour of London from Lord Akeldama & a chance to win HEARTLESS**

Kicking off a new week of Deadly Destinations is Leslie Parrish’s Detective Gabe Cooper.  Gabe is going to give us a tour of Savannah.  The first book in Leslie’s Extrasensory Agents series is COLD SIGHT, followed by COLD TOUCH. Thanks to Leslie and the wonderful team over at Penguin/Signet, four of you who comment on this post will win a copy of the second book!  See details below.

A visit to Savannah with Detective Gabe Cooper, the hero of COLD TOUCH

by Leslie Parrish

The first thing you need to know if you’re gonna visit Savannah in the summertime is that it’s freaking hot. I mean, eyeballs-sweating, hurts-to-breathe hot. I was raised in Georgia, about a hundred miles west of here—in a shitbox farmhouse, by my scumbag grandfather, if you must know—and I still find myself surprised by how brutal the summer months are here.

The hottest spot this morning is on Ogeechee Road, right across from the Laurel Grove North Cemetery (not the more famous Bonaventure, where all the tourists go to get their creepy kicks, this one’s right in the city.) See, this bar called Fast Eddie’s burnt to the ground last night, and standing here watching the last embers of smoke rise off the blackened remains is like standing on the devil’s back porch.

Of course, that could be because of the human remains found inside. A kid…who’d kill a kid and build a wall around him to hide the body? It’s enough to make any cop sick.

Anyway…back to Savannah. It’s a strange place. Seedy and elegant, a strange mix of old and new. Strip clubs and neon-lit bars frequented by the dangerous and the risk-takers stand only blocks away from mysterious old mansions draped in history and tended by the uber rich. I know a woman who lives in one of those Victorian District mansions…but, to be honest, I think a part of her still lives in Laurel Grove.

I mentioned that before. Laurel Grove North. Like I said, the cemeteries are a big attraction here. Personally, I think that’s some freaky shit, but tourists and locals alike flock to walk amongst Savannah’s dead. My partner says death is one of the things the South does best-like NASCAR and sweet tea. If you walk through the cemetery, you’ll notice the age of the graves as they go from elaborately decorated white stones with florid prose to faded, mossy-green markers that are so old you can’t make out much more than a year. Each grave you pass as you draw deeper into Laurel Grove sucks you deeper into the past. Stories are told, some short and tragic, some long and epic. Names repeat—whole generations of families telling tales of their lives and their loves and their tragedies. Wrought iron gates, icy-cold marble statues of weeping angels or even grinning gargoyles, crypts that hold fresh corpses and dusty old bones alike.

It’s not a place you want to get lost in overnight. It’s definitely not a place a terrified, naked teenage girl who’s just been brought back from the dead would want to curl up to hide from her attacker. But it happened. And the strange abiility that girl—now a woman, Olivia—brought back with her, the way she can touch human remains and re-live everything experienced by that victim during the last two minutes of their life, is the stuff of which nightmares are made.

But that won’t be on your tour. Right? You wouldn’t dream of getting lost amongst the graves, running on a damp, misty moonlight night, scraping thick tangles of Spanish moss out of your way as you dive into a decrepit crypt to hide. No. You’d better stick to the cheesy ghost tours up on Wright Square or have a pirate-themed dinner at one of the restaurants catering to out-of-towners. Because the real Savannah—the dark Savannah where the dead walk—is someplace you just can’t visit unless you want to be haunted by it for the rest of your life.

Like Olivia has been.

Another good series in Savannah. From what I’ve seen of it, sounds like a good city to base a paranormal series in.
