Deadly Destinations: Maria Lima’s Keira Kelly on Rio Seco, Texas

**Visit All Things Urban Fantasy today for her Deadly Destination tour of New Mexico from Charley Davidson & a chance to win SECOND GRAVE ON THE LEFT**

Our guide for today’s Deadly Destinations tour is Maria Lima’s Keira Kelly.  She’s taking us through Rio Seco, which is chock-full of supernatural types.  In Blood Sacrifice, Keira’s latest battle continues with the Dark Fae.  Thanks to Simon & Schuster/Pocket Books, two of you who comment on this post will win a copy of the book!  See details below.

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Visiting Rio Seco, Texas

by Keira Kelly

Welcome to Rio Seco, Texas, a beautiful lakeside community in the heart of the Texas Hill Country located on the north shore of Lake….oops. I almost told you, didn’t I? Can’t have that. Can’t tell you. Can’t let the actual location out.

It’s not that Rio Seco isn’t gorgeous. It is. It’s a lovely jewel of a secret, tucked into a quiet pocket of the lake, miles from anything even close to resembling a modern town. Rio Seco’s about a quieter pace, somewhere where the locals can do their own thing, and not be bothered by outsiders. Just the place for a supernatural clan whose members often include shapeshifters who love to hunt all furry and four-legged.

We’re off the beaten path, away from the ever-encroaching and expanding suburbs, far, far away from the hustle and bustle of urban life–and we really, really like it that way!

The first thing a visitor notices is the intersection on where the main road crosses the farm-to-market road. There’s no sign, but there is a four-way stop. One. Yeah, the only four-way stop sign in the entire county. On the southwest corner, you’ll see our one-and-only strip center. The other corners: just live oak, mesquite and pretty much more nothing.

When my family came here a couple of centuries ago, even the little bit of civilization that exists now was only a dream in a future developer’s head. Not even the lake existed. Just miles and miles of undeveloped land dotted with stunted trees and loads of cactus and mesquite. Perfect!

Only…perfect became perfect for everyone else, too. After the lake came in (during the early 70s, thanks to politicians and a dam), so did the tourists. Tall, tanned and Texan, ever last bloody one of them. They wanted to water ski, to Jetski, to camp out and barbecue, to raise a little hell and a whole heckuva lot of beer. Our hideaway became less hidden and suddenly, those big stretches of uninhabited hunting ground became dotted with tiny oases of weekend homes and more horrifically, resort ranches.

So we closed ranks and fight to keep it hidden and quiet, fight to make sure that it’s not on realtor’s radar. Sure, there’s a huge resort inn nearby, only it’s not open to the public. It’s where Adam Walker and his vampire clan live. Human families are scattered throughout the county, ranchers and other locals who are content to keep their heads down and the questions to a minimum.

Bea’s Place anchors the left side of the L-shaped strip center which also houses the local Sheriff’s office. Other businesses used to flourish: the video rental store, the dry cleaners…the deli. But no more. With the closing of our ranks and, well, other less savory occurrences, came the inevitable slow death of local business. It’s a side-effect we’ll have to live with. Sometimes, the only choice is the tough one.

But that’s enough maudlin talk. If you’re a member of the supernatural community, you know that you need to stop by and let me know you’re here. During your stay, make sure to eat at Bea’s. Check out the marina and take a spin around the lake. Do a little skiing. Play some tennis. Shoot a little shit. Just remember, when your business here is done, leave. And keep our secret. Because you know that if you don’t, we’ll find you…

About Maria:

Sometime before the Revolution, Maria Lima was born in Matanzas, Cuba, to a family of voracious readers and would-be writers. After her family emigrated to the United States, Maria discovered the magic of books. She started writing her own stories and has been at it ever since. Her writing turned corporate as she used her journalism degree and cranked out marketing copy, feature stories and book reviews. The fiction muse kept calling and in the spring of 2005, was finally fed as Maria’s first published short story, “The Butler Didn’t Do It” was published in Chesapeake Crimes I and garnered an Agatha Award nomination for Best Short Story. Maria spends most of her days working as a Senior Web Project Manager in the DC area. Her evenings and weekends are spent writing.

This giveaway is provided by Simon & Schuster/Pocket Books

Two winners will each receive a copy of Blood Sacrifice by Maria Lima

Available on August 30, 2011 from Simon & Schuster/Pocket Books

About the Book:

All’s fair in blood and war. . . .

Talk about wedding crashers from hell. Keira Kelly and her sexy vampire king, Adam, are about to tie the proverbial knot—sort of—when an uninvited blood relative shows up to cast a long, dark shadow over the happy occasion. Adam’s brother Gideon comes bearing the one-size-fits-all gift of bad news: an ancient, convoluted Challenge thrown down upon the entire Kelly clan. It seems the dreaded forces of the Dark Fae have declared war on Keira’s family, and at stake is the land that is rightfully theirs. But while the Kellys gather their troops in a historic San Antonio hotel to strategize, there’s mayhem back in Rio Seco. The old cemetery is vandalized, fires break out, and—worst of all—the Kelly clan matriarch and leader, Keira’s great-great-grandmother Minerva, goes missing. Should Keira risk breaking the Challenge rules by returning to her beloved home, or should she continue the waiting game that seems the only other option? With everything she loves and maybe even her life on the line, she has only one chance to get the answer right.

I’ve read the first three books in this series and really liked them. I have Blood Heat on my TBR. I would love Blood Sacrifice and have a Blood Line reading day to get caught up.

Gee, I wish I was a member of the supernatural community so I could visit Rio Seco. I’ve driven through Texas on my way to Florida, but only stopped in San Antonio to visit SeaWorld, so I’m sure I didn’t get to see a lot of the natural beauty of the state.

@Tanya, the Hill Country is a lovely place, I highly recommend it as a vacation getaway. Rio Seco is based on a real town: Lago Vista, which is located on Lake Travis.

For you continuing fans, thanks so much! I love to hear from folks who’ve read the books.

    Cheers to everyone!
