Jillian Conrad’s Guide to Los Angeles, California
by Michelle Rowen
Michelle Rowen asked me to write this blog post up about my experiences here in the Los Angeles area. My name is Jillian Conrad and I’m the focus of her Nightshade urban fantasy romance duology— the second book, BLOODLUST, is officially out today!
That said, avoid Los Angeles whenever possible. It is a hotbed of vampiric activity. They’re all over the place. Secondly, avoid coming anywhere near me because I’m a magnet for vamps right now due to my Nightshade-infused blood. Let’s just say, I’m the flame and they’re the moths. Moths with sharp fangs and a driving need to feed. They’re drawn to me like crazy because I smell really good to them, but since my blood is poisonous to vampires, one taste and they go up in flames. Still, getting bit doesn’t exactly tickle, so I try to avoid this whenever possible.
So…tips for being in Los Angeles… Avoid biker bars. And anywhere else that looks seedy and dangerous. You’re safe during the day, of course. Vamps avoid the sun since it burns their eyes right out of their heads. That sounds like an incentive to love the nightlife, if you ask me. But they’re still awake during the day, so avoid any underground tunnels or passageways that look dangerous. I shouldn’t even have to say this really. Use common sense while here (or anywhere else). Trust your survival instincts. And don’t look in a vamp’s eyes because the stronger ones can influence you to do…well, all sorts of things. Mostly bad things.
I know that in Malibu there’s at least one multi-million dollar home that is vampire-infested—and it also has a network
of underground tunnels beneath it. If you’re checking it out, bring a silver stake. And a tall, muscular, dhampir protector (although you can’t have mine because I’m keeping him very busy).
Lastly, there’s an amusement park right on the Pacific Ocean called “FunTown.” It might not be in your local listings, but it’s still there. It looks totally legit, but beware: it is owned by vampires who consider the humans who come to ride the Ferris wheel a tasty smorgasbord. Avoid dark areas and staircases leading downward.
And, really, before any trip you should make sure to have an up-to-date will. I’m not being negative here, just practical. There are things that go bump in the night. And sometimes those things have sharp teeth and big appetites.
Enjoy your vacation!
