Are you lost? Or are you a thrill seeker? I come across lost human hikers in these woods now and then, but you, you have a lot of curiosity in your eyes. And cameras. Put those away or I’ll confiscate them. We don’t allow photos or uninvited guests. You’ve left the trails in the state park and you’ve hiked toward the colony hoping to spot an archangel, haven’t you? Well, I’m the next best thing. *I smile, showing off my upper and lower sets of fangs.*
They call me Devin. I’m a Guardian. A demon. Guardians keep the archangels and the civilian demons safe. You seem harmless enough, foolish to think you could reach the colony in secret, but harmless. Many humans who come here aren’t in it for the thrill and bragging rights of spotting an archangel in flight over the colony. Poachers frequently trek these woods, hoping to see an archangel, not with a camera or binoculars, but with the scopes of their rifles. I don’t need to tell you how much human collectors pay to expand their archangel feather collections.
Don’t get me wrong—I don’t distrust all humans. I raised an orphan girl of your species. We’re not so different—humans, demons, archangels. We have our physical differences, but here, *I cover my heart with my hand, willing harmless flames to coat my fingers* we’re quite similar. Good and evil? We’re all capable of both.
Tell you what. Walk with me. Not far, just through this grove of white birches. There’s something I’d like you to see. After that, you’ll need to leave, hastily. It’ll be dark soon, and many of the Guardians in these woods aren’t as polite as I am.
There. Look just to the right of tallest pine tree. See that rocky outcrop? Yes, that’s one of our archangels. Forget the cameras and just look.
*I quietly let you have a long look at the archangel. He’s lying face-down on the mountainside ledge that overlooks the colony, his white and black wings fully spread and draped over the stone.*
He’s probably asleep, you see. Even though the Guardians discourage use of the exposed location, he can often be seen there on beautiful days early in the spring. The archangels prefer height, and after the long Vermont winter, they get desperate to soak up some sun.
Any poacher would take this opportunity to kill him, not that we would let one get so close. I’ve shown you this only because I want you to go back to your friends and your jobs, and talk about seeing him. What does he look like to you? The archangels are not evil beings cast out of heaven. They are not otherworldly entities with no human emotions. They are just people. They enjoy the same things you enjoy. When they’re killed for their feathers, or for being “fallen,” they have friends and family who mourn.
Now, go back the way you came, and take more care the next time you’re in woods.
Sarah Gilman started her first novel in third grade. She never finished that story, but never gave up the dream. Her fascination with wings also began at that age, when images of the ancient Egyptian goddess Isis captured her imagination and never let go. Now a paranormal romance writer, she employs her love of writing to bring the allure of winged creatures to the pages of her novels. Sarah lives in Vermont with her supportive husband and two spoiled cats.

About this Book:
Kidnapped by humans and raised in a research facility, Jett was taught to believe his own race of demons insidious and violent. But a friendship with the archangel Raphael shatters Jett’s reality. Caught between two worlds, his first months of freedom find him lingering on the fringes of his home colony, Sanctuary. When the human who stole Jett captures another demon youth from Sanctuary, Jett learns of the real plan—to steal Raphael’s archangel grandchildren. Jett wants to bring his captor to justice, but he must overcome the lies from his past and join forces with the demon Guardians, and the demon child’s older sister, Lexine.
Irresistible attraction grows between Jett and Lexine, but Lexine’s prophetic dreams of being mated to a poacher make her wary. And if Jett goes through the all-consuming process of becoming a Guardian, he may forfeit any chance they have of being together.
