Deadly Destinations: Grimes’ James Donovan on the Walled-City-of-Reno

**Visit All Things Urban Fantasy today for her Deadly Destinations tour with D.B. Jackson & enter for a chance to win signed copies of Thieves Quarry & Thieftaker**

Deadly Destinations continues today with the rules for living in the Walled-City-of-Reno. James Donovan, from Viral Nation by Shaunta Grimes, will gladly fill us in on the details. Viral Nation is a young adult dystopian/time travel novel from Berkley/Penguin and will be released today (July 2, 2013)! Click HERE to read the first two chapters of Viral Nation!

Enter for a chance to win a copy of Viral Nation! A huge thanks to Penguin books for this giveaway.

My name is James Donovan, and I’m here to help you.

Look. You don’t have to listen to me.

Just try to remember: I’m only telling you these things for your own good.

The Walled-City-of-Reno is safe. The Company has eradicated the Virus. The Company has done away with violent crime. You’re probably too young to remember what it was like before—when people were afraid. You’ve never had to worry about someone snatching you off the street and raping you or murdering you. People like me stand between you and that kind of fear.

You can be happy in the city. Reno is as beautiful a place as it ever was. We still have the Truckee River and clean air that smells as fresh as air can smell, especially now that the cars are all gone. We have snow in the winter and plenty of sunshine in the summer.

Really, there isn’t much to complain about. All you have to do is remember the rules. There are only five.

Obey the curfew. Be inside when the bells ring.

Forget that the world is any bigger than this city. The Virus still lives outside the walls. Violence still happens out there. You don’t really want to leave anyway, do you?

Food and energy are precious. Don’t waste either, and make your own whenever possible.

Remember that every job is important. We are all equal in the city.

Don’t even think about a violent crime. Trust me on this one. We will know, long before you do, and you will be stopped.

I don’t want you to end up in the kill room. I don’t want to point my rifle at the red X the guards tape over your heart. I won’t know if my bullet is one of the live rounds. I do know that if you end up in front of my squad, two of us will have the ammunition that will stop your crime before you can even conceive of committing it.

You don’t have to worry about these things, though, do you?

About this Book:

After a virus claimed nearly the entire global population, the world changed. The United States splintered into fifty walled cities where the surviving citizens clustered to start over. The Company, which ended the plague by bringing a life-saving vaccine back from the future, controls everything. They ration the scant food and supplies through a lottery system, mandate daily doses of virus suppressant, and even monitor future timelines to stop crimes before they can be committed.

Brilliant but autistic, sixteen-year-old Clover Donovan has always dreamed of studying at the Waverly-Stead Academy. Her brother and caretaker, West, has done everything in his power to make her dream a reality. But Clover’s refusal to part with her beloved service dog denies her entry into the school. Instead, she is drafted into the Time Mariners, a team of Company operatives who travel through time to gather news about the future.

When one of Clover’s missions reveals that West’s life is in danger, the Donovans are shattered. To change West’s fate, they’ll have to take on the mysterious Company. But as its secrets are revealed, they realize that the Company’s rule may not be as benevolent as it seems. In saving her brother, Clover will face a more powerful force than she ever imagined? and will team up with a band of fellow misfits and outsiders to incite a revolution that will change their destinies forever.

I’ve already read this one, but I just wanted to chirp in and say that it was absolutely fantastic! Clover was a wonderful main character and props to Ms. Grimes for creating such an engrossing world.
