Deadly Venice

Welcome to Venice like you’ve never seen her before.

In my new novel, The Demoness of Waking Dreams, Venice is a city where angels and demons battle to the death over the fate of humankind.  In every corner, on every winding street, demonic entities lurk.  They are drawn to the beauty of the divine, seeking to profane the sacred.

Although the real city is steeped in art and beauty, there is another side of Venice: the dangerous side.  Here’s an excerpt from the novel, in which Rogue demoness Luciana Rossetti shares her view of the city with Guardian angel Brandon Clarkson:

***

“You think Venice is beautiful and sacred.  You don’t know the real Venice,” Luciana said, her voice deepening into a snarl.  “Can’t you feel it?  This city is steeped in suffering and death.  Not two hundred yards from here, prisoners were tortured.  I can take you down into the prison cells attached to the Doge’s palace.  We can take our own little trip to hell without ever leaving Venice.”

“No, thanks,” said Brandon, staring her down.

“If you look closely, you’ll see the underworld drawn on this city.  Etched in the architecture.  Gargoyles and gremlins crouching in corners, perched on cornices and tucked into the shadows beneath the eaves.  A satanic lion’s head is carved on a palazzo on the Calle Diedo.  On the façade of the Ospedale Civile, the City Hospital, there’s a sixteenth century graffiti etching of a murderer holding a human heart after ripping it out of his own mother.”

“If you’re looking for hatred, it’s easy enough to find,” he said grimly.

“Never underestimate the presence of evil.  Evil exists here.  It is real.  If you don’t believe me, I can show you.  Venetians used to believe there was a dragon living in the lagoon who could be pacified only by the oars of the gondoliers.  Do you think that myth was founded on a superstitious fear, or do you think there was some truth to it?”

Two lucky winners will each receive a copy of The Demoness of Waking Dreams

Available August 28, 2012 from Harlequin Mira

About this Book:

Even ANGELS can be tough… Ex-cop Brendan Clarkson is an angel with an edge. His tough exterior is the perfect camouflage for his job-hunting down the most dangerous criminals on earth. Brendan’s a self-reliant and demanding lone wolf, constantly on the brink of clashing with his superiors at the Company of Angels.

Brendan is the perfect angel to track and capture demoness Luciana Rossetti. Luciana’s cool, green-eyed beauty masks her true nature: inside, she’s a dangerous and malevolent killer. Yet, she sees what most people don’t-that beneath the layers of Brendan’s rugged shell beats the heart of a passionate lover.

They are perfectly matched. Yin and yang. Angel and demon. Man and woman. But only one of them can win the battle of wills, of strength and of desire.
