*Visit All Things Urban Fantasy today for her Deadly Destination tour of Clay and Susan Griffith’s vampire infested London & a chance to win THE GREYFRIAR and THE RIFT WALKER**
Deadly Destinations takes us to two really great cities, New York and Chicago. Niniane Lorelle is here today from Thea Harrison’s Elder Races series to school us on the art of having poison-tipped stilettos, and the importance of being able to protect yourself should you come across a supernatural baddie or hottie. DRAGON BOUND is already available. STORM’S HEART (available from Berkley on August 2, 2011), is the second book in the Elder Races series. Thanks to Penguin/Berkley, one of you who comment on this post will win a copy of both books! See details below.

Having poison-tipped stilettos everywhere you travel?=Priceless
Hi, my name is Tricks Periwinkle, only, well, it’s not. My real name is Niniane Lorelle. (Don’t ever shorten the name “Niniane.” Just don’t do that. It’s not pretty.)
I used to be the head of PR at Cuelebre Enterprises in New York, only Dragos Cuelebre (yes, he really is a dragon, guys; I’ve seen him change with my own two eyes, and it was like WHOA SHIT!…was it okay that I just wrote shit?) killed my uncle, so now I have to be the Dark Fae Queen. I’m not looking forward to it. Being Queen, I mean. I was thrilled when Dragos killed my uncle Urien, because two hundred years ago Urien killed my entire family, and he would have lurved to kill me too if he could have gotten his hands on me.
Anyhoo, that’s a little off topic. I was asked to write this travel piece about how to get around safely in New York and Chicago, and I was like, safely? Really? I don’t know what that word means. Hence (I like the word “hence.” It sounds so Queeny.), the stilettos and poison, ‘cause I never go anywhere without bodyguards but a girl’s got to have a back-up plan, am I right or am I right? And yes, I really paid that much for them, because my hands are little, and the grip had to be just so, and I wanted the sheaths to be tooled and stained so that they are pretty, because that might not matter to anyone else but I’ve got to wear those blasted things all the freaking time.
(Somebody’s going to edit this, right?) Back to travel. You know one thing I lurv about Manhattan, aside from the shops, theaters, restaurants, and nightclubs? Manhattan has no alleys. Really. People who have never been to New York don’t realize this, but space is too valuable to waste on alleyways. From my perspective, that is an awesome good thing, because alleys and me, we don’t get along.
Chicago’s got alleys. Alleys are dangerous. Bad things happen there. I’m actually not too fond of Greek restaurants right now either. See, because I’m actually taking a break from all the impending Queen-stuff right now to write this piece, and a couple of days ago, one of my many cousins, Geril, along with some of his cohorts—have you ever noticed that cohorts are never a good thing? They’re always bad!—fed me dinner at a Greek restaurant then lured me into a nearby alleyway and tried to assassinate me. (It’s not plain ole “kill” when you’re s’posed to be a head of state.)
I lived. My cousin and the cohorts didn’t. And you know why they didn’t? Bingo: the stilettos.
Plus lots and lots and lots of self-defense training my dear friends the Wyr sentinels gave me. No matter how bad I was, they wouldn’t give up on training me, until sometimes, just between yousies and mesies, I wanted to lie on the training mat and barf on their shoes.
So, my friends, if you have to travel, take lots of self-defense classes, avoid alleyways at all costs, and if you have to eat in public places, make sure you know where all the exits are in case you need to skip out unexpectedly. It’s also really handy if a gigantic sexy-to-die-for Wyr sentinel decides to watch out for you, whether you want him to or not, and yes, my friends, I am talking about Tiago Black Eagle, the warlord sentinel, otherwise known affectionately by his friends as Dr. Death.
And always dip your weapons in poison.
XOXOX All my love,
PS: By the time you read this I’ll be Queen. Gak.
PPS: There’s been more than one attempt on my life, and I’m so much in love with Tiago, my heart hurts. Pray for us.
