In this pulse-pounding and thrillingly sensual novel, New York Times bestselling author Lara Adrian returns to the mesmerizing world of the Midnight Breed, following new characters into a dark future where an uneasy peace can unravel into war—and a great betrayal can mask an all-consuming love.

Twenty years after the terror of First Dawn—when mankind learned that vampires lived secretly among them—the threat of violence reigns as the two species struggle to coexist. The only group preserving the fragile harmony is the Order, an elite cadre of Breed warriors dedicated to protecting humans and vampires alike. And in this precarious world of torn loyalties and shattered trust, Mira, a fiery squad captain, finds that every fight bears an intensely personal cost.

Raised among the Order, Mira has always believed in the warrior’s code of swift—and even lethal—justice. But the one thing she desires more than the Order’s hard-won acceptance is Kellan Archer, a sexy but troubled Breed fighter. In love with him since childhood, Mira once broke through his tough exterior during an unexpected night of rapture, but the next day he mysteriously disappeared, never to return.

Kellan didn’t think he would ever see Mira again—or have to confront the truth of why he left. After abandoning the Order years ago, he now leads a band of human rebels intent on carrying out their own vigilante rule of law. Yet a high-profile kidnapping assignment brings him face-to-face with the past he sought to avoid, and the striking woman he has tried desperately to forget. And as tensions mount and the risk of bloodshed grows, Kellan and Mira must take sides—between the competing missions that dominate their lives, and the electrifying passion that claims their hearts.

Quick & Dirty: Lost love returns after years of being presumed dead.  Will he lose or regain his heart’s desire?

The Review:

Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed series was a new world for me.  I haven’t had the pleasure of reading the previous 10 books but this world is very gripping even as a stand alone book.  There were times were I felt I was missing a glimmer to a previous story but it didn’t impede the progression of Mira and Kellan/Bowman’s story.

Mira grew up under the guidance of the Order and later joined its ranks as a Captain over other warriors seeking to maintain harmony between human and vampire worlds.  If that isn’t enough to make her a true woman to be feared, her eyes can tell the viewer their future.  Unfortunately, it is this gift that send the love of her life, Kellan out of her life when he sees his death and her heartbreak.

Kellan/Bowman seeks to distance himself from Mira in order to save her this future fate but when she is injured during one of his Rebellion ops he can do nothing but bring her to him.  Kellan then must deal not only with the present circumstances but the ever present reminder that his fate is creeping closer and closer to his present.

As a result of Kellan’s rebellion op, Mira and Jeremy Ackmyer’s disappearance raises alarm in Lucan, leader of the Order.  Lucan puts Nathan, a trained assassin, on their trail with orders to find Mira no matter the cost.

Woven into the middle of this love story is the reality of political machinations being played out for a summit to be held to mark the continued peace between the humans and vampires.

This book was a truly enjoyable read and I will keep my eye out for book 12 in the series.  If you are looking to fill a void left while your next paranormal series has a new release then I believe you would enjoy visiting the world of A Midnight Breed series.

Notable Scene:

The cage thundered with violence as the fight resumed, but Mira ignored the specacle of the area.  Her sights were locked on her target.  Her own need to punish boild like acid in her veins as she stalked Rooster through the throng.

She thought of Kellan’s final moments as she watched the rebel sympathizer cackle and hoot, he and the other humans cheered each terrible strike, frothing for more Breed bloodshed.

She didn’t know at what point she’d drawn her blades from their sheaths at her back.  She felt the chill of custom-tooled metal in her hands, her fingertips light on the scrollwork of the daggers’ hilts.  Felt her instincts itching to let the blades fly as Rooster shot a sudden glance her direction.

He saw her, realized she was coming for him.  Something flashed in his eyes as they met hers.  Panic, certainly.  But Mira saw guilt in that worried gaze too.
