Author Q&A

What gets you through a dark day?

There are many things–a call to my best friend or a good laugh with my husband. A great movie that inspires or some ultra-peppy music. And shopping! Browsing in a store is just the thing to perk up any mood!

Why werewolves?

My favorite movie has always been American Werewolf in London. And I like the original Wolf Man. I like the idea that sympathetic characters have this awful condition that they are forced to deal with. There is always a girl that is in love with them and whose life is also disrupted by his condition. The fact that the guy doesn’t want to be a werewolf and struggles makes him vulnerable and sexy, I think. I also wanted my werewolf to be attractive and have his transformation be exciting as opposed to grotesque.

Have you ever been to a psychic?

I’ve been to a New Age fair where my friend sat with a psychic. I listened but didn’t get my own reading. I was totally into New Age stuff for years–incense, crystals, etc. But I didn’t want someone to tell my fortune and put thoughts into my head about things that may or may not happen. I saved my money for the crystal jewelry instead.

How was writing this book different from writing the Vampire Kisses books?

First of all the werewolf goes to school. I could write a lot of school scenes where the conflict happens and explore romantic moments, where in Vampire Kisses everything had to be set outside school–or at night– because Alexander couldn’t be exposed to sunlight. Also, the main character in Once in a Full Moon, Celeste, is popular. She is accepted and liked by all at school and doesn’t make waves. And Brandon turns into a werewolf only under a full moon, otherwise he is normal, but has to deal with effects of being a werewolf.

Can you give us a sneak peek into what will happen in the next book?

Nash knows Brandon is a werewolf and that he and Celeste are seeing each other. He tries to use his knowledge to separate them. When Brandon’s father visits Legend’s Run, he creates a serum that could possibly be a cure for his son’s nocturnal condition. But Brandon’s father discovers there is one major side effect in consuming the antidote–it could actually worsen Brandon’s unusual nightly transformations. If Brandon takes the serum at the wrong time, he runs the risk of becoming a werewolf full time.
