Fall Carnival: Ever the Hunted by Erin Summerill

Fall Carnival

Scavenger Hunt

Today we are going on a little hunt in search of a rather amazing bounty hunter. Does that sound like fun? His name is Cohen McKay and it is said he murdered his own mentor in cold blood. We will be tracking him across mountains, forests and possibly the desert, so this will not be an easy journey! Keep your eyes peeled for any signs that he may have passed through the area like footprints or abandoned campsites! Also, remember that this man has been accused of murder and he is to be considered highly dangerous! Lucky for us, we have a tour guide that happens to be one of the best trackers in the land. Please join me in welcoming Britta Flannery to the blog today! Also, check out my review for Ever the Hunted here!

Interview:

Dark Faerie Tales: Hi Britta, thanks for agreeing to let us join you on your hunt! To start things off, can you tell us a little bit more about yourself and why this particular hunt is so important to you?

Britta: Hullo, I’m Britta. My friends, (or friend since I’ve only one) call me Britt. But then again, my one friend is accused of murdering my father, so I guess that leaves me with no one. It makes me sick to think that Cohen could’ve done something like this, but I’ll not let Papa’s death be in vain. Besides, if I don’t catch Cohen, the captain of the guards will string me up since he caught me poaching. So yeah, on importance, I’d say catching Cohen ranks up there with breathing.

DFT: I am so sorry to hear about your father’s death it sounds like the two of you were very close! If it’s not too painful, can you tell us some of your favorite memories of your father?

Britta: First time I took down a deer, Pa looked at me, warmth in his eyes like he was the July sun, and said, “Well done, my girl.” Most of my memories, Papa was trying to teach me a lesson. Like the time he gave me my first dagger. He said, “keep your blade sharp, your wits sharper.” Seems like I’ve got his voice stuck in my head for most of what I do.

DFT: Besides us, you have a few other companions coming on this journey with you. I know you aren’t bringing them along by choice, but I was wondering if you might tell us a little bit more about each of them?

Britta: Since I agreed to hunt Cohen, Lord Jamis (the high lord and Regent) assigned Captain Omar, Leif and Tomas as my guards. Captain Omar’s about as friendly as a mountain cat on the hunt. Basically I try to steer clear of him for fear of being eviscerated.

Tomas looks like a wily fox, stinks like one, and acts like one. I wouldn’t trust him even if he was the one manacled and I was the guard.

Then there’s Leif. I’m not sure what to think of him. He’s a mammoth of man, though he’s only a couple years older than me. But he’s kind and considerate, and seems to want to be my friend.

DFT: You have quite a history with the man we are hunting. At one point you fancied yourself in love with him. I know at the moment you are not a huge fan of his, but I imagine for you to have felt for him the way you did, he must have been a pretty amazing guy! What is the one thing you liked best about him?

Britta: Cohen was always there for me. Even though he’s considered nobility and could have his pick of friends and courtships, he treated our friendship like it was the only thing that mattered. He never let anyone treat me unkindly. He always shared his meal. And when he looked at me with those earthy-hazel eyes, he saw something more than an outcast.

DFT: Since losing your father you have had to deal with many hardships but it also has taught you many life lessons that you would have not learned otherwise. If you can without spoiling anything will you share what is the most important lesson you have learned so far on your journey?

Britta: Nobody can survive alone. We need each other. We need support and friendship and love.

Ok I have to ask do you really think that the boy you loved and spent countless hours with really murdered your father?

It makes me sick to think it might be so. My gut’s telling me no. But there’s too much evidence to ignore.

DFT: I’m a lucky little duck and I have actually already had a chance to read your story, so I know how the book ends but now I’m dying to know what happens next. Can you give us any clues as to what we can expect from book two???

Britta: I thought I knew who was, what I was capable of, what I wanted. But when magic connects you to another and turns dark, it has a way of casting a new light over the world and separating you from the ones you love.
In this book, I’ll make new friends, discover the depths of love, and figure out if I’m brave enough to face my worst nightmares.

DFT: Because we are at a carnival, I thought it would be fun to ask a few carnival related questions! This or That Carnival Style: Fresh dipped corn dogs or Corn on the Cob?

Britta: Corn on the Cob, smothered in butter, and salted.

DFT: The ringtoss game or the fishing pond?

Britta: It depends, what comes out of the fishing pond? I’m going to go with the fishing if it’ll give me a big Cohen sized treat.

DFT: Cotton Candy or Popcorn?

Britta: Both…gah, this is too hard. For now, Popcorn.

DFT: The Ferris Wheel or Carousal?

Britta: I can ride a mean Carousal horse. Just saying.

DFT: The talent show or the hypnotist show?

Britta: The hypnotist sounds a bit like dark magic…so I pick the talent show! I want to see some knife throwing.

Seventeen year-old Britta Flannery is at ease only in the woods with her dagger and bow. She spends her days tracking criminals alongside her father, the legendary bounty hunter for the King of Malam—that is, until her father is murdered. Now outcast and alone and having no rights to her father’s land or inheritance, she seeks refuge where she feels most safe: the Ever Woods. When Britta is caught poaching by the royal guard, instead of facing the noose she is offered a deal: her freedom in exchange for her father’s killer.

However, it’s not so simple.

The alleged killer is none other than Cohen McKay, her father’s former apprentice. The only friend she’s ever known. The boy she once loved who broke her heart. She must go on a dangerous quest in a world of warring kingdoms, mad kings, and dark magic to find the real killer. But Britta wields more power than she knows. And soon she will learn what has always made her different will make her a daunting and dangerous force.

Oh no! Her former love is the alleged killer of her father. Poor Britta.

I am more up for reading about an adventure than actually going on one so would not likely wish to go on the hunt with Britta.
