Fantastic Fables: Kevin Hearne’s Oberon on Various Fables

**Visit Tynga’s Reviews today for her Cinderella Fantastic Fable from Sharon Ashwood & a chance to win FROSTBOUND and a special giveaway of Darkness Descending from Devyn Quinn**

A new week of Fantastic Fables starts today and we have a very special visitor.  I’m a big fan of all things furry and it doesn’t get any better than man’s best friend.  Oberon isn’t your average Irish wolfhound.  He has a fine mind, some pretty cool abilities and a great sense of humor.  Lucky for us, Atticus agreed to let him hangout with us for the day.  Kevin Hearne’s HAMMERED (available now from Random House/Del Rey), is the third book in The Iron Druid Chronicles urban fantasy series, which is full of excellent mythology, worldbuilding and supernatural shenanigans.  Thanks to Kevin and the wonderful people at Random House/Del Rey, four of you who comment on this post will win a copy of the latest book!  See details below

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Oberon is an Irish wolfhound bound telepathically to the ancient Druid, Atticus O’Sullivan in The Iron Druid Chronicles. He learned English gradually through their link and spent many hours watching movies and TV while Atticus was working. He is, in all other respects, a normal dog—except he can type with his front claws.

All Fables Would Be Better With a Hound

Okay, when I look at all those stories that animators peddle to tiny humans so their parents don’t have to be parents for an hour or so, I can’t think of any one of them that wouldn’t be improved by having me around to solve some of their problems. There is a reason that dogs are called man’s best friend. We are actually a woman’s best friend, too—don’t lay that sexism on me!

Take Cinderella for an example.  She’s a doormat because her only friends are tiny little mice and some oddly cooperative birds. The mice are admittedly far more skilled at dressmaking than I am, but think of how much easier her life would have been if I’d been around to bark and growl at the stepsisters and generally persuade them to back the hell off.

I could have put food on the table by hunting deer. I could have protected their sheep from wolves, if they had any sheep or wolves. They would have been far more prosperous with a proper hound in the house, and all they would have had to do is feed me sausage and let me watch cable.

Speaking of wolves, Little Red Riding Hood seriously needed a hound if she couldn’t tell the difference between a wolf and her grandmother. Either that or the grandmother needed a giant tube of Nair. But with me along, I could have sniffed out that wolf right away and torn out its throat, and we all would have been spared Red’s formulaic sentence structure as she slowly pieced together that her grandma probably went down kinda tough and stringy and she was to be the tender main course.

And Goldilocks! Good grief, if only I’d been there, I could have saved her life! No hound with the tiniest shred of loyalty would let their human get eaten by great big bears! I would have smelled who lived there right away and the temperature of the porridge, the height of the furniture, and the comfort of the beds would have been moot points!

So basically I’m saying I make everything better. Atticus told me so and he wouldn’t lie to me. If you don’t have a hound, you should get one and stock up on treats. You won’t be sorry.

About Kevin:

Kevin is the author of The Iron Druid Chronicles, an urban fantasy series published by Del Rey Books. The first three books of the series will be released in May and June of 2011.

An Arizona native, Kevin got hooked on comic books at an early age and embraced his inner nerd. Later he got hooked on coffee, but that did nothing to ameliorate his nerdhood. He spent time as a singing waiter in college and also contributed to the college newspaper as an editorial cartoonist and feature columnist. It was during this time he got the writing bug, thanks to Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

He now teaches high school English, reads lots of fantasy, and paints miniature dwarfs because the redundancy amuses him. He’s currently working on the fourth book in The Iron Druid Chronicles.

Hounded Hexed Hammered

This giveaway is provided by Kevin and Random House/Del Rey

Four winners will each receive a copy of Hammered by Kevin Hearne

Available on July 5, 2011 from Random House/Del Rey

About the Book:

Think of it: The entire world’s collected mythology and folklore is waiting to be mined for fictional gold. That’s what makes urban fantasy the most exciting genre to read and write for me. The potential for supernatural shenanigans in the present seems infinite. To narrow the focus a bit and keep myself sane, when I sat down to write Hounded, the first book of The Iron Druid Chronicles, I made myself a list of what I wanted to contribute to the genre. I wanted an unusual hero, easily distinguishable from others; I wanted to give man’s best friend a voice, and I wanted it to be a big best friend, like an Irish wolfhound; I wanted a little old lady sipping whiskey on her porch, some gratuitous allusions to Shakespeare, and a beautiful, (mostly) normal girl in there with freckles and strawberry lip gloss; and I wanted a whole lot of gods and goddesses trying to survive in a secular world, especially from some pantheons we don’t hear about all that often. Also, because they kind of scare me, no leather pants.

The Iron Druid Chronicles follows the adventures of Atticus O’Sullivan, a 2,100-year-old Druid who’s discovered that it’s the little things in life that make it worth living, and he can continue to enjoy those things so long as he hides from the Irish gods who want to kill him. Unfortunately, once he decides to take a stand, he draws the attention of all sorts of beings who thought the last real Druid had passed from this world long ago.

Part of the great fun of writing a character this old is figuring out where Atticus was during all of history’s great events and whether he might have had a hand in them. But the pith, the core of what makes him so interesting to me is how he handles outliving all his friends and loved ones: How does he hang on to his humanity when his lifespan is greater than that of every other human?

The Iron Druid Chronicles still has plenty of familiar urban fantasy elements, but I hope readers will enjoy this very different hero who can talk to both gods and dogs, yet loves nothing so much as conversing with friends over a fine plate of fish and chips and a pint to wash it down.

I came across this series last week I think it was. I was instantly curious about it and added it to my to be read pile. Unfortunately my pile is growing so big I haven’t had a chance to look more into it. After reading this though I think its being bumped up to next in line :-)

    Awesome giveaway!

Everything IS better with Oberon in it. ;) My husband is driving me nuts with his need to tell me every comment he leaves for Kevin on Facebook and how I need to hurry up and read Hexed and Hammered so he can talk about them… as if I don’t have an obligation as a reviewer to get those books read before I indulge the Oberon love. Sheesh!

One does give pause and ponder what Oberon would have made of the Three Little Pigs… saved them from the wolf or made sausages?

I already have all of the books. Simply put, I stumbled upon Hounded and simply couldn’t resist the others. In fact, my wife has Kevin to blame (or perhaps thank, I’m unclear on that distinction) for me being out of commission for a couple of days while I retreated into these great tales. It’s hard to say why this series is so enjoyable. Perhaps it’s just easier to say there isn’t a lot not to like. I hope the series gets a good marketing push so a wide audience can come to enjoy what I now take for granted. Great contest!

It took me driving around all afternoon going to 4 different grocery stores and major book stores before I finally found “Hounded”!!! I almost cried when at first I couldn’t find it, until a nice employee showed me where it actually was. It was way more money than I wanted to spend but this was Atticus and Oberon we’re talking about!!! Worth every dime!!!

Ya know Kevin, if you put Oberon in the wonderful world of “Shrek” he’d fit right in!!! Makes me wonder what he’d do with Shrek himself!!? :D

I have found the greatest book series to date!! Hounded, Hexed and Hammered are part of The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. They follow the main character Atticus as he battles diabolical creatures, witches, demons and Gods. Lest not forget his trusty Irish Wolfhound Oberon that is addicted to French Poodles and Sausages, who takes the stories to a heartwarming climax! This series is suspenseful, humorous and intriguing. After you read the first book you WILL be HOOKED. For me this series allows me to escape into a mystical journey of twists and turns and WTFs :) that leave me breathlessly smiling and wanting MORE!!Trust me it will take you there too! Mr. Hearne has found a way to mix old world myths with new world reality and does it o so beautifully! Keep up the good work and I’ll keep up the reading!!!

I think my dogs would agree with Oberon that my life is much better with them in it. My 13 1/2 yr old min-pin mix Emmy, has decided it’s her job to keep my bed warm. Jessie a 3 yr old wire-haired fox terrier mix, lets me know if anyone is at the door or near the yard, loudly. After all Emmy is deaf and mom’s a bit hard of hearing too. And the newest addition, Dax, a golden retriever mix, thinks at 8 weeks old, his job is to look cute & adorable. :D

Only 8 more months till April! And then we get more Oberon…and Atticus too! LOL! Uh yes I’m counting down.

Atticus and Oberon are just such a good pairing and I have enjoyed all three books immensley. I do have one moan though, on behalf of Oberon. All the books feature Atticus on the front cover. No sign of Oberon anywhere and let’s face it, Oberon deserves to be up there with his Druid. So I am starting a campaign to get Oberon on the front cover of the next book, Tricked!

I love your voice/attitude of Oberon in this commentary on fables! If this series is appropriate for a YA reader I would love to share it with my son :-). Thanks for the giveaway!

Just finished Hounded and have now moved on to Hexed. I am officially hooked on the Iron Druid Chronicles. I especially love the amazing mash-up of mythologic gods with fantasy creatures of all shapes and sizes…never seen this before and done so smoothly! Atticus is an amazing character, with a sense of humor and morality that nicely compliments his serious ass-kicking skills. Thank your, Mr. Hearne for creating this series and I can’t wait to continue on the journey.

I read the first book in this series and the others are on my to buy list! Fantastic book, great world-building, wonderfully developed characters, and Oberon is the best of them all. I love his comments, they added such a great dash of humor to the story!

    Kevin,

You KNOW I have read and loved all 3 books and am drooling in anticipation for #4. Oberon The Wonder Dog should have been in Snow White. The 7 little folk could have ridden on him and he’d NEVER let his human eat a bad apple!

I just read Hounded and absolutely loved it! It was highly recommended to me on Goodreads from a friend and I snagged it at the library as soon as I could. Can’t wait to read on. Thanks for the chance and to Kevin for sharing!

Am a huge fan, as I think Atticus and Oberon make a great team! Looking forward to seeing what else they get up to, and can’t wait for their next adventure! With Oberon maybe having a larger role? *hint hint*

This Hound sounds amazing. But there’s only one dealbreaker. He must take care of his own poopy.

I didn’t stumble on the series – I actively searched it out after I first heard about the books. They’re wonderful! Oberon is wonderful! Atticus is fine, too. (well, ok, he’s wonderful, too – but Oberon makes me squee like a fangirl.)It’s a great series, with seriousness and silliness mixed together.

I’ve only recently run across this series but anywhere it has been mentioned, I’ve taken the time to see what other readers thought about it. Needless to say, it HAS been added to my wishlist.
