I walked through the dusts of Earth as it was being formed. I saw the first blinding spark of the sun as it burst into a star. I’ve seen the void of a million black holes, felt the pull of its unending gravity. And yet humans fascinate me more than any of that. And being like one of them, walking the Earth as though I belong, has been the biggest challenge I’ve ever faced. I’ve fought demons, waged wars, taken the lives of thousands in the blink of an eye, but nothing prepared me for the reality of life on Earth.
And I am looked upon strangely. Females stare, admire my shape, as do many males. But most males look away when I draw near. One senses power, no matter how unexplainable, so their discretion is wise.
I look exactly as I do on my plane of existence, in my world. Though I am not particularly tall there, I am here. I have dark hair and dark skin and dark eyes. Girls seem unable to turn away from me, even when they try. It is part of who I am, a supreme being, an angel. Dealing with that has been tricky. Dealing with the person I was sent to take in the first place even more so. No one could ever accuse Lorelei MacAlister of not taking control of her destiny. It is one that involves some very unsavory characters from my world.
Therefore, I will stay here on this plane. I will help if I can. And I will try not to fall in love with this human in the process.
Also, I like jeans.
Fill in the Blanks:
NOBODY KNOWS I AM: The Angel of Death… In this world I am called Jared but in mine I am called Azrael, the son of light and darkness. I am the only angel ever given autonomous power over human life. I chose to use that power to save Lorelei, a human prophet who comes from a line of noble women. In so doing, I changed human history and am stuck on Earth, but Lorelei’s here, so I’m not complaining. Very much.
I WISH I COULD STOP: Thinking about Lorelei.
I’M A SUCKER FOR: Lorelei. And I have developed an odd fondness for grilled cheese sandwiches. We don’t have those in my world.
A GOOD TIME FOR ME IS: Spending an afternoon with Lorelei. I also like fighting demons.
NOBODY WOULD BELIEVE ME IF THEY SAW ME: Dematerialize. I hear it’s quite a sight.
I’D REALLY RATHER: Figure out how to stop a supernatural war that threatens the existence of human life on Earth. But that’s not my job. It’s Lorelei’s. Unfortunately, it will put her in great danger. I will help in any way I can. I will give my life if I have to.
THE FIRST THING I DO IN THE MORNING IS: I’m in a human body now, albeit a very strong and fast one. The things I have to do in the mornings are mind-boggling. I would rather not discuss them.
1. Sophia Bush – Kill, but only if it was her time.
2. Kerry Washington – Kill again. It’s all in the timing.
3. Jennifer Lopez – And again. I’m the Angel of Death. It’s what I do.

About this Book:
From the author of The New York Times bestselling series that began with First Grave on the Right—a thrilling Young Adult novel garnering high praise and early buzz from major authors.
Ten years ago, Lorelei’s parents disappeared without a trace. Raised by her grandparents and leaning on the support of her best friends, Lorelei is finally beginning to accept the fact that her parents are never coming home. For Lorelei, life goes on.
High school is not quite as painful as she thinks it will be, and things are as normal as they can be. Until the day the school’s designated loner, Cameron Lusk, begins to stalk her, turning up where she least expects it, standing outside her house in the dark, night after night. Things get even more complicated when a new guy—terrifying, tough, sexy Jared Kovach—comes to school. Cameron and Jared instantly despise each other and Lorelei seems to be the reason for their animosity. What does Jared know about her parents? Why does Cameron tell Jared he can’t have Lorelei? And what will any of them do when Death comes knocking for real?
Thrilling, sassy, sexy, and inventive, Darynda Jones’s first foray into the world of teens will leave readers eager for the next installment.
