Guest Author: Eve Silver (Guest Post & Giveaway)

I’m so pleased to welcome Eve Silver here today to Dark Faerie Tales.  The first book in her Otherkin series, Sins of the Heart, has just been released on August 1, 2010.  You can read an excerpt of Sins of the Heart here.  The second book, Sins of the Soul, will hit shelves in September 1, 2010.  Sins of the Heart is also part of my Debut Paranormal Romance Reading Challenge.

One lucky commenter has a chance to win an autographed copy of Sins of the Heart.  Details are listed at the end of the post.

Kick Ass

by Eve Silver

I’ll start my post with a micro-excerpt from the first book in the Otherkin trilogy, Sins of the Heart:

“You’re gorgeous when you’re stabbing things, Roxy Tam.”

Yes, when I said “micro” I meant exactly that. But that tiny snippet of dialogue exemplifies so much about Dagan Krayl, the dark, sexy hero of Sins of the Heart. And it also tells us quite a bit about the heroine, Roxy Tam.

Dagan’s every instinct screams for him to stand in front of Roxy, to protect her, to pound his chest and shout, “Mine.” But he knows that if he does, he’ll lose her, because Roxy isn’t the type to be owned or possessed. She’s been taking care of business on her own for her whole life, and she isn’t about to stop now just because a guy—a gorgeous, luscious, incredibly sexy guy—decides to turn her world upside down.

Roxy’s a kick ass kind of girl. She’s smart and savvy and she uses her brains to solve problems, except on those occasions when brawn will serve her better. In those cases, she isn’t averse to using a bit of physical coercion. She gets the job done. That’s who she is.

And despite his inclinations to be the über-alpha male, Dagan can’t help but find Roxy’s strength and independence incredibly attractive. So he reins in his natural inclinations and lets Roxy be Roxy, even when it means she’s standing shoulder to shoulder with him. Stabbing things.

The question is: What things?

Kick ass heroine: Strong, feisty, can save herself when need be, but room to grow. She has to show some vulnerabilities otherwise she won’t seem relatable to or human.

A kiss ass heroine is defined by her attitude. During the course of the novel she takes no s*** and doesn’t back down out of fright. If she lets the hero in, it’s so that he can help her, not so that he can take care of her. She knows how to take care of herself. She also knows what she wants from him and how to get it…

I think a kick ass heroine is a combination of all of the above, but mostly about attitude. She’s got to have some skills, talent and brains, but the attitude that she’s going to fight until she either beats and/or kills whoever needs it, or dies trying is what makes her kick ass in my opinion.

Without all three or more ingredients you just get pretty much a plain Jane who wouldn’t know how to save her life if she had a writen map of directions. For me that strength comes from supernatural powers and strength of heart and character. Physical strength is usally factored in there some where, but it’s not a requirement for me. A physically strong partner in crime would do the trick too, where their strength’s balance each other, and make them stronger together than apart.
