Guest Author: Jennifer Estep (Guest Post & Giveaway)

I’m pleased to welcome author Jennifer Estep here today to Dark Faerie Tales to talk about her Elemental Assassin series and her young adult urban fantasy series called Mythos Academy.  Her latest book, Venom, was recently released on September 28, 2010.  You can read the first chapter of Venom here.  Haven’t had a chance to start this series yet?  No worries, you can also read the first chapter of Spider’s Bite and Web of Lies.

I really love this series and Gin Blanco is a great urban fantasy heroine.  You can read my review of Spider’s Bite here.  I will also post my reviews for Web of Lies and Venom this weekend.  Stay tuned…

One lucky commenter will have a chance to win a copy of Venom.  As always, details are listed at the end of the post.

Welcome Jennifer!

Gin Blanco 101

Greetings and salutations! First of all, I want to say thanks to Angela for having me on the blog today. Thanks, Angela!

Some of you might know me as the author of the Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series. The books focus on Gin Blanco, an assassin codenamed the Spider who can control the elements of Ice and Stone. When she’s not busy killing people and righting wrongs, Gin runs a barbecue restaurant called the Pork Pit in the fictional southern metropolis of Ashland. The city is also home to giants, dwarves, vampires, and elementals – Air, Fire, Ice, and Stone.

The first two books in the series are Spider’s Bite and Web of Lies. Venom, the third book, came out on Sept. 28. Tangled Threads, the fourth book, will be published in May 2011, while the fifth book (untitled) will be released in October 2011.

I’ve also sold a young adult urban fantasy series called Mythos Academy. The first book is called Touch of Frost and will be out in August 2011. The books focus on Gwen Frost, a Gypsy girl who has the gift of psychometry, or the ability to know an object’s history just by touching it. After a serious freak-out with her magic, Gwen finds herself shipped off to Mythos Academy, a school for the descendents of ancient warriors like Spartans, Valkyries, and more.

So Angela suggested that I might do a Gin 101 guide to the series for folks who haven’t read the Elemental Assassin books. Here are a few things you might like to know if you’re thinking about buying the books:

1) Gin is an assassin, and she kills people in the books – a lot of people. She wouldn’t be much of an assassin if she never killed anyone, now would she? In other words, Gin isn’t your average heroine – she’s more of an anti-hero than anything else. If reading about a bad-girl heroine bothers you, then my books may not be for you.

2) Gin might be an assassin, but she has her own code. She never kills kids or pets, and she never frames anyone for murder. Plus, she’s intensely loyal to the few family/friends that she does have. So she does have a few good qualities. LOL.

3) Gin likes to cook and she runs a restaurant, so there is a lot of food talk in the book. I’ve been told that it’s best not to read the books on an empty stomach. LOL. You can find a few of the recipes that Gin makes on my website: Scroll down until you see “Gin’s Recipe Box.”

4) The books take place in Ashland, a gritty, violent, corrupt city where Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina meet in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. The books have a very Southern vibe to them. They always say write about what you know, and since I’m a Southern girl, it just made sense to me to give the books that sort of flavor.

5) With every book, I try to explore a little more of my city/world and take Gin and readers to new places, as well as visiting old favorites. Among the “set pieces” as I call them are a barbecue restaurant, a beauty salon, a coal mine, a swanky country club, and a riverboat casino.

6) I like writing fight scenes, and there are at least a couple of those in every book in the series as Gin battles various bad guys. There are also some pretty steamy sex scenes in the books.

7) My books are just fun. I’m not writing the next Great American Novel here, and I don’t want to. I just want to entertain folks with lots of action, lots of danger, and lots of magic, along with a fair helping of romance.

8) It would be best to read the books in order. I think that I include enough backstory in each of the books to help new readers figure out what’s going on, but if you want the whole story from beginning to end, then you need to read the series in order, starting with Spider’s Bite.

9) I’ve written a series of free short stories to go along with the series. To read the stories, go to the Excerpts page of my website. I thought the stories were just something fun that I could do for readers.

10) There is a plan for the series. Right now, I’m under contract for five books, which will let me finish out all the major story arcs, like who Gin ends up with and how she gets her revenge on the person who murdered her family. Of course, I hope to write more books beyond the first five but that will depend on sales, like everything else does. Regardless, I think the five books will give readers a complete, good story and answer all the major questions. I hope so, anyway.

So there you have it. Some things about Gin Blanco and the Elemental Assassin series.

What about you guys? Which urban fantasy or other series are you enjoying right now?

Hi, everyone! Sorry I am so late chiming in, but I’ve been having some technical difficulties. LOL. I just wanted to say thanks for the nice words about my books. I appreciate them!

An interesting mix of reads. I’ll have to check out Summers and Maziel’s books. I hadn’t heard of those before. And I keep meaning to try Ward’s new series, the one with the angels …

+1 Lately I’ve been reading some new (to me) series and really enjoying them. Namely the Cal Leandros series by Rob Thurman and the Kara Gillian series by Diana Rowland. But this series is definitely on my ‘to-read’ list! They sound wonderful and I’ve heard nothing but good things about them!!

Right now I’m reading the first book in the Harry Dresden series by Jim Butcher. I’m not too far into it but it’s going okay so far.

You guys have named even more authors that I’ve been meaning to try, especially the Parasol Protectorate series. Everyone seems to just love those books.
