Kevin James Breaux’s Ten Years

by Kevin James Breaux

Ten years.

Imagine what I could have done in ten years.  I could have learned to speak Japanese. I could have played every RPG video game ever created, and if I spoke Japanese I could have played the foreign ones too! Man, I could have built a spaceship in my backyard and flew it to the moon and back, if I wanted.

Seriously, that’s how much time I have spent honing my skills as an author and I admit there are days my mind starts to calculate all the hours I have invested crafting pretty words and the totals are insane. Oh, not to mention all the hours supporting my endeavors online; tweeting takes time!

I’m not complaining, I never would, this is my goal, my dream and my passion all rolled up into one tasty sugary treat and hard work makes a reward all the sweeter.

Would I take it all back, maybe do something different?

Hell No!

Do I wish it was easier?

Sure, but when is anything that is really worth it, easy? Think about it, George Washington did not use a steel bridge to cross the Delaware River. He crossed in a tiny boat, over frozen water with Leonardo Dicaprio up front yelling, “I’m king of the world!”

Me, I would have kicked Leonardo in the seat of his pantaloons, right off the bow of the ship if he was standing in-between me and success.  See, there’s something you should know about me, I’m a fighter.  I’m the pit-bull who latches onto a ham bone and there’s nothing you can do to make me let go, unless you want to lose a limb.

My ten years paid off when I won the lottery last December. No, not the state lotto, I won the publishing one.  After all the work writing, revising, rewriting and submitting and submitting and submitting: I finally found a publisher for my fantasy novel, SOUL BORN.

Oddly enough, it’s not even my favorite or best work, at least in my opinion, but then again I’m one of those artists who tears up his work and throws it in the trash if there is the tiniest brush stroke out of place, no matter how long I painstaking worked at it.

Soul Born was the first novel I wrote, and now it’s the first novel I’ve had published. It’s the story of a world coming out of a dark age.  Lands are beginning to prosper, when a warlord invades the southern tip of the island continent of Illyia. In the northern mountains a young mage by the name of Opal, a student in a school of magic users, devises a plan to stop the warlord that will earn her the respect she feels she deserves from her teachers.

Soul Born begins a series that will take the reader on a journey from the beginning of this world as it is born into fantasy.

Synopsis (Product Description):

All Opal wanted was to be respected as a wielder of magic, but her teachers passed her over time and time again. When a mysterious warlord embarks on a conquest to destroy the lands of Illyia Opal seizes an opportunity to step out from the shadows of her instructors and take her rightful spot among them.

Tala, an alluring young elf, was banished from her tribe, hunted and nearly killed by the beasts that dwell in the deep forests, but more than anything else she is a survivor. Joining forces with an ancient elemental power Tala finds herself in the center of an unrelenting human war.

Flesh like leather and bone as strong as steel Karn, a veteran from the first kingdom to fall, is fueled by vengeance. While pushing ever headlong into battle Karn begins to recall memories of another life; ghosts that haunt his dreams.

Through death of soul, their world is born.

definitely an inspiring post! as someone who is at the beginning of my novel-writing journey, it’s wonderful to read about the experiences of someone at the other end of the spectrum, and to feel that i might one day be able to join them. thanks, and congrats!

I so would have kicked Leonardo DiCaprio in the bum, too…not that I dislike him. It would just be fun. I can’t say it enough, congrats (or, contracts) on your release and I wish you the greatest success :)
