Laura Wright has spent most of her life immersed in the worlds of singing, acting and competitive ballroom dancing. But when she started writing, she knew she’d found her true calling.  Although she was born and raised in Minnesota, Laura now lives in Los Angeles, California with her husband, two children, three dogs, two frogs, several butterflies and a gaggle of ladybugs. When she’s not writing, Laura loves to grow her own food, read, dance, watch movies, and from time to time, pretend she’s Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica. Laura has been thrice nominated for a Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice Award, and loves hearing from her readers.

What Makes You Addicted To A Series?

by Laura Wright

I remember the first series I became addicted to. It was Jude Deveraux’s ‘Velvet’ series.  I had fallen in love with the characters from the first book, Velvet Promise, and didn’t want to let them go.  I thought about them day and night and wondered where things would go from the story’s ending, what about this character and this one.  (You know what I’m talking about :D ) So, when I heard it was a series, that I would get to continue on with the characters and meet others, I was beyond thrilled! Problem was, I didn’t want to read anything else – and in fact didn’t want to read another author for a good long while.

Sounds a bit extreme, right?

But this was my first leap into a series.  Today, I am much more rational.

Well, most of the time :D

The Black Dagger Brotherhood had me acting a little nuts for awhile, and then there was Robin Schone and Harry Potter, Libba Bray and Larissa Ione, Nalini Singh and Jennifer Lyon.

Okay, clearly the sickness hasn’t abated.

I think, for me, the draw to series is knowing that the world I’ve just enjoyed for the past few days can live on, and I can return to the familiar…and that…certain something, that feeling I had when I was visiting.

It’s addictive, and I can only hope that readers feel a little of that in my series, Mark of the Vampire – that they look forward to hanging out with the Roman brothers for many years to come.

When I was a teenager, way back when in the 1970’s, I stumbled across a book called Angelique by Sergeanne Golon in the UBS that I used to haunt. That was it for me. There were 8 books and they were all out of print so very hard to get. I also got addicted to The Lymond Chronicles by Dorothy Dunnett – another out of print series. I spent huge amounts of time going to out of the way book stores trying to track those books down. Unfortunately, Angelique is still out of print, but at least The Lymond Chronicles is on Kindle these days.

I don’t recall the very first series but it must be one of these series: Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Walter Farley’s the Black Stallion, or Marguerite Henry’s Misty of Chincoteague. Yep, mysteries or horses.
