The Devastating Appeal of the Dark Hero.
by Laura Wright
He’s sexy, brilliant and tortured beyond repair. He’s been deeply, inescapably hurt by a woman or a parent or shapeshifting vampire brother. He is dangerous, hungry and can’t decide if he wants to kiss or kill. He has scars, interior or exterior, or god help us all – both. His pain affects every area of his life…or maybe he’s not living at all – just existing. He has sex, but it’s meaningless or driven by anger or just a way to shut off, shut down.
And then, just as our hero is at his lowest point, the heroine enters the picture. He notices her at once. There’s something different about her, something he recognizes. But he ain’t going there. She’s everything he can’t want, everything he refuses to believe he deserves.
Yet, she makes him – or forces him – to feel for the first time in his life…
I don’t know about you, but this scenario draws me in every single time.
It’s Beauty and the Beast at its core I suppose, but with one little edit. For me to love a book, Beauty can’t be some annoying, wilting flower. She’s got to match the Beast brain for brain, edge for edge, scar for scar. Then I’m there with her and with him, rooting for them both, crying with them, laughing, absorbed in their love scenes.
Yes, Beauty and the Beast is my theme, my favorite fantasy – the one I look for when I go to the bookstore and scan the shelves and back cover copy. It’s a theme that fills a void in me, so I guess it’s no surprise that my upcoming vampire series is all about three dark, dangerous, brilliant, tortured vampires – and the females who fight with them and for them.
Laura Wright has spent most of her life immersed in the worlds of singing, acting and competitive ballroom dancing. But when she started writing, she knew she’d found her true calling. Although she was born and raised in Minnesota, Laura now lives in Los Angeles, California with her husband, two children, three dogs, two frogs, several butterflies and a gaggle of ladybugs. When she’s not writing, Laura loves to grow her own food, read, dance, watch movies, and from time to time, pretend she’s Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica. Laura has been thrice nominated for a Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice Award, and loves hearing from her readers.

There is no doubt that my Roman brothers: Alexander, Nicholas and Lucian are terrifyingly savage and cripplingly damaged, and yet I find them irresistible. It might have something to do with the fact that they’re also deliciously sexy. Hmmm…(quick fantasy pause here) Clearly, dark heroes are just my favorite – to read and to write, but what about you? What kind of hero makes your knees weak? Or send you into a quick fantasy pause moment?
