Guest Author: Laura Wright (Guest Post & Giveaway)

With me here today is author Laura Wright, who’s book Eternal Hunger, is scheduled to be released on October 5, 2010.  This is the first book in her paranormal romance series called Mark of the Vampire.  You can also read an excerpt of Eternal Hunger here.

One lucky commenter will have a chance to win an autographed ARC of Eternal Hunger.  As always, details are listed at the end of the post.

Dangerous.

Broken.

Tortured.

The Devastating Appeal of the Dark Hero.

by Laura Wright

He’s sexy, brilliant and tortured beyond repair.  He’s been deeply, inescapably hurt by a woman or a parent or shapeshifting vampire brother.  He is dangerous, hungry and can’t decide if he wants to kiss or kill.  He has scars, interior or exterior, or god help us all – both.  His pain affects every area of his life…or maybe he’s not living at all – just existing.  He has sex, but it’s meaningless or driven by anger or just a way to shut off, shut down.

And then, just as our hero is at his lowest point, the heroine enters the picture.  He notices her at once.  There’s something different about her, something he recognizes.  But he ain’t going there.  She’s everything he can’t want, everything he refuses to believe he deserves.

Yet, she makes him – or forces him – to feel for the first time in his life…

I don’t know about you, but this scenario draws me in every single time.

It’s Beauty and the Beast at its core I suppose, but with one little edit.  For me to love a book, Beauty can’t be some annoying, wilting flower. She’s got to match the Beast brain for brain, edge for edge, scar for scar. Then I’m there with her and with him, rooting for them both, crying with them, laughing, absorbed in their love scenes.

Yes, Beauty and the Beast is my theme, my favorite fantasy – the one I look for when I go to the bookstore and scan the shelves and back cover copy. It’s a theme that fills a void in me, so I guess it’s no surprise that my upcoming vampire series is all about three dark, dangerous, brilliant, tortured vampires – and the females who fight with them and for them.

Author Bio:

Laura Wright has spent most of her life immersed in the worlds of singing, acting and competitive ballroom dancing. But when she started writing, she knew she’d found her true calling.  Although she was born and raised in Minnesota, Laura now lives in Los Angeles, California with her husband, two children, three dogs, two frogs, several butterflies and a gaggle of ladybugs. When she’s not writing, Laura loves to grow her own food, read, dance, watch movies, and from time to time, pretend she’s Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica. Laura has been thrice nominated for a Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice Award, and loves hearing from her readers.

GIVEAWAY GUIDELINES:

One lucky commenter will have a chance to win an autographed ARC of Eternal Hunger.

To enter, leave a comment below answering the following question:

There is no doubt that my Roman brothers: Alexander, Nicholas and Lucian are terrifyingly savage and cripplingly damaged, and yet I find them irresistible.  It might have something to do with the fact that they’re also deliciously sexy.  Hmmm…(quick fantasy pause here)  Clearly, dark heroes are just my favorite – to read and to write, but what about you?  What kind of hero makes your knees weak? Or send you into a quick fantasy pause moment?

1. +1 entry for answering the question (required).

2. +2 entries for becoming a follower of this blog and Dark Faerie Tales on Twitter.

One that is both physically and emotionally strong, but has flaws. He would have gotten into trouble in the past, but has turned his life around. I love reading these kind of characters.

Stacey – Thanks for spreading the word! Don’t you wonder why we love the tortured ones so much? Is it that they feel impossible to fix? Or is it that we’re always being told we can never change a man, but in books – we can?

The dark, mysterious, bad boy characters with flaws are always my favorite. No one is perfect and I don’t want to read about perfect individuals. As long as the brooding and regrets of the past apply to the story and don’t go overboard.

I love heroes that are real. Maybe someone who has gotten into trouble in his past, but turned his life around. I love when they are both physically and emotionally strong, but have flaws. I want them to be somewhat protective. Dark, and mysterious are wonderful. Let’s put it this way, I don’t want the hero to be perfect. Hopefully that makes sense.

Beauty and the Beast! Oh, That is my FAVE type of story! :)

I think a dark hero is good as long as he does have a good side. Dark, not evil. Makes him flawed. Makes him ironically more human that way. :)

+1 What kind of hero makes your knees weak? Or send you into a quick fantasy pause moment?

The ones with the tortured soul. They are always so angry at the world and not afraid of anything, but the minute they find love you get to see a whole different side of them. Love it when a female can bring them down to their knees and all of a sudden the only thought running through their head is “What if I lose her?” then all of a sudden their angry and fearless self sets out to protect what is theirs.

The tragic lone hero! Everything has left a prince or some other person, and he’s all alone, with nothing, nobody by his side! So absolutely sexy!

I like a hero like the pirate Errol Flynn played in Captain Blood. He’s a pirate but a good pirate raiding the bad guys on behalf of his queen. Robin Hood is a good bad guy hero I’d luv to meet in the dark woods too!

+ 1 – My favourite type of hero is one who is looked down upon because of his looks but somehow turns out to be a character of great strength and is then admired.
