Guest Author: Regan Hastings (Guest Post & Giveaway)

Please join me in welcoming author Regan Hastings here today to Dark Faerie Tales.  The first book in her The Awakening series, Visions of Magic, was just released on February 1, 2011.  You can read an excerpt here.

One lucky commenter will have a chance to win a copy of Visions of Magic.  As always, details are listed at the end of the post.

About the Book:

Regan Hastings is the author of VISIONS OF MAGIC, the first book of the Awakening series of paranormal romances. Generations ago, a group of greedy witches called evil from the depths of Hell. Filled with remorse, they sentenced themselves to many lifetimes without magical powers. Now their powers have begun to awaken again. With the help of their Eternal warrior-protectors, they must now work together to banish the evil they created before it consumes the world.

Welcome Regan!

All Hail the Cover Artists

by Regan Hastings

VISIONS OF MAGIC was released on February 1. I’m writing this blog on January 31, so clearly, I have no idea how the first week of sales went yet, but I’m very optimistic. I’ve been hearing a lot of buzz about my book. It makes me proud to know that people are talking about my book before it’s even been released, but I can’t take credit for the buzz. At least, not 100%.

Yes, I’m the one who came up with the storyline that’s getting some fabulous reviews. I created the coven of witches whose greed for more power just might destroy the world. I created the Eternal, an immortal warrior forged from the sun whose sole purpose is to protect his witch-mate.

But I didn’t design the book cover and day-um! that is one badass cover. If the book sales soar as I hope they will during the first week, a large part of the credit goes to the cover artist whose work seduces readers.

Yes, yes, we’re all told not to judge a book by its cover, but what can I say? I’m judging. The first time I saw the concept for the cover of VISIONS OF MAGIC, I went all squonky inside. The only change I asked for was to make the flame tattoo bigger because the tattoo plays such a pivotal role in the book.

Maybe more than with any other genre, attention-grabbing cover art is vital in paranormal and urban fantasy books. Readers want a cover that inflames the imagination. We want to get the sense that the book is going to whoosh us away from the ordinary world and take us somewhere fantastic. We want something that tells us, “This is going to be a sexy read that will rock my world.” Something edgy and dark, something that will grab us on page one and make our blood pump.

I love reading, and I find that I’m drawn to paranormal romance and urban fantasy covers with three main elements: sex appeal, danger, and a cool font.

This cover for Shattered Souls by Mary Lindsey definitely has all the elements I love. Don’t rose petals give it great sex appeal, especially when formed into an off-the-shoulder dress? And because her arm is sort of hanging down, making her look dead, danger is implied. Then there’s the ordinary font that is shattered, making it look sharp enough to cut.

Another cover I like is Hard Bitten by Chloe Neill. There’s a bit of the dominatrix in this heroine, with her leather pants and a sword that’s reminiscent of a whip, and, of course, a dominatrix is sex appeal and danger all wrapped up into one package. The font looks run-of-the-mill until you come to the medieval cross-shaped Ts. Between that, the moon, and the word “bitten’ in the title, you know instantly that this is a vampire book.

What do you think of the cover of VISIONS OF MAGIC? Does it make you take a second look? Do you like the fiery colors, or do you prefer darker shades? What elements in a book cover stop you in your tracks? What cues do you look for when you’re browsing at the bookstore?

Author Bio:

A six time nominee for the prestigious RITA award from the Romance Writers of America, Maureen’s books have been translated into dozens of languages around the world and she’s even had one of her books made into a CBS-TV movie.

Before I even got to the question I was thinking that I loved that cover! I love how the bright colors stand out and YES! it makes me want to take a look inside!

I love the cover. Usually, paranormal book covers are dark so I this really stands out. I love her hair colour and the way she’s standing. It definitely makes me look twice. Hmm, I’m not sure what attracts me to a book cover. I think something about it has to catch my attention, ie title, colours… but usually, I pretty much look at the blurbs of as many books as I can before making a decision about which one to read.

I love the cover and actually put it on my TBR list because I saw the cover floating around, LoL. The colors really caught my eye. And I love her hair flowing around and her tattoo.

I really, really like this cover. It make me take a second look at the book. The first was like “so red” but the second one was more like “it’s so cool”. But the question about the reason I like a cover… I really don’t know: sometimes are the colours (I love read, purple, blue, green…), or the composition, maybe a capcha image or model… But I really think the cover is very important. I recognise I can’t read some books because the cover is terrible!

+1 I absolutely love the cover! Wouldn’t change a thing. I love books that have a cool font for the title and color. I look for a cool and unique book title when shopping.

I really like the cover, as it really looks like its on fire. I like a lot of different kinds of covers, as long as it looks good (and not too much like a romance novel).

I love the cover, gorgeous and eye catching. The red alone would be enough to make me look twice but I’ve got to say that on the second look, it’s her hair and facial expression that draw me in. I think the fiery colors work really well for this cover. I’m surprised with the color choice for the title of the book, I wouldn’t have thought it would work but I like it. In general when I’m browsing covers at a bookstore, I tend to go for the ‘sexy’ covers and the macro ones first.

I absolutely pick up a lot of books just by the cover art my mom being an artist she watched a show on how it is being said that it is going to become a lost art form with so many books going electronic. It is a concern of some artists and no she is not a book cover artist but she knows that me & her grandaughter(who is only 8) are both book junkies she shared the story with us. I love the sexy hot covers your cover is one that made me read what it was about and add it to my to read list on goodreads before it came out. I also really liked the Nightshade book cover by Andrea Cremer. I guess they just have to grab my attention and your cover does just that. ten.ttanull@htyms.adnama
