Guest Author: Sara Reinke (Guest Post & Giveaway)

My guest today is author Sara Reinke.  The fourth book in her The Brethren series, Dark Passages: Tristan and Karen, was recently released on April 1, 2011.  Please join me in welcoming Sara here today to Dark Faerie Tales. You can read an excerpt from the book here.

One lucky commenter will have a chance to win a signed paperback proof copy of Dark Passages: Tristan and Karen.  As always, details are listed at the end of the post.

Welcome Sara!

I remember the first time I ever wrote a sex scene. I giggled my whole way through it. I’ve gotten better with practice, and now I actually don’t feel awkward or embarrassed at all writing them. (The idea that my parents might read them, now that still gives me a sort of ick-feeling, but that’s another blog topic for another day…)

One thing that has continued to bother me with sex scenes, however, is the description of what lies beneath a guy’s pants. Not that part of what lies beneath, but the stuff over that. You know—his underpants.

With women, it’s pretty cut and dry. We wear panties. They can be lacy, silky, satiny, cottony, crotchless, granny-style, thong-back, bikini cut, G-string—but no matter what, you can still say the word panties and readers catch your drift.

Men, however, have basically three  styles of underwear: the boxer, the brief and the amalgamated boxer-brief variety. (Yeah, there are thongs, but do guys really wear these if they’re not strippers?) I don’t know about you, but to me, each type evokes a very different, very specific image in my mind. Underpants say a lot about a man.

Personally, I prefer to see guys in boxer shorts. I think they’re sexy in a laid-back, casual sort of way. Most women I know say the same thing, and like that boxers leave a little something to the imagination. But then again, I know some who prefer their guys in briefs because they can get a better sense of the approximate size and shape of what’s lurking underneath just by looking.

I should point out there’s a difference between the ol’ “tighty whities” briefs and more contemporary styles, such as those by Calvin Klein. In researching (ahem!) for this entry, I looked at a lot of online images of men in their underwear. A lot. Some of the briefs I saw looked pretty sexy, I have to admit. (Or maybe it’s just that the models wearing them could have been dressed in a canvas bag and still looked hot.) And the boxer-brief style has some promise. I was definitely intrigued by what I saw…er, for future character reference, of course.

I’ve had guy friends try to explain to me that they wear boxers or briefs based on personal preference and comfort, not necessarily on what they think a woman finds sexually appealing. So what it really boils down to is his personality.

The same holds true in fictional characters. Every hero’s personality is unique, so shouldn’t his taste in underpants be, too? And if so, then why in the hell is it every time I’m undressing my hero on the page, I feel that momentary indecision—boxers? Or briefs?—and then wind up sticking him in shorts?

For example, in my latest title, Dark Passages: Tristan and Karen, my hero wears boxers. I don’t ever specifically state this but I knew it while I was writing. In each and every scene, it was somewhere in the back of my mind, never too far from my conscious awareness: Tristan wears boxer shorts.

Dark Passages: Tristan & Karen is the fourth installment of The Brethren Series, which chronicles an ancient sect of vampires who have lived in secret within human societies for millennia. The Brethren originated in medieval France, and they migrated to America just prior to the outbreaks of both the French and American Revolutions. Over the centuries, some have amassed a sizable fortune in the bourbon distilling and Thoroughbred horseracing industries and live on enormous estates tucked among the rolling Bluegrass hills of Kentucky, while others—including Tristan’s family—have made their homes in eastern California, near the shores of Lake Tahoe. They’re considered outcasts by the Kentucky-based Brethren because of their conviction that Brethren were meant to feed from each other, not humans.

They’re a sort of blend of a wolf pack and a cult. It’s a very misogynistic society in which women are on the low end of the totem pole and have no say in their lives whatsoever. Because dominance over the Brethren isn’t something permanently awarded to any one particular clan, there is always a sort of Shakespearean-like conspiracy underway within one family or another; one trying to usurp authority from the other. Unwittingly, Tristan and Karen find themselves thrust into the middle of one such family feud in Dark Passages. And Tristan does it in boxer shorts.

The fourth installment, Dark Passages: Tristan & Karen is the first of the series to be novella-length, not novel. My plan is to make is a “series within a series,” with at least two novella-length Dark Passages installments each calendar year in addition to one novel-length Brethren series release. The title, Dark Passages will be used consistently throughout, and each will focus on a different hero/heroine set. For example, I’m currently working on Dark Passages 2: Pilar and Elías, which I’ve slated for an early June release. It’s to be a prologue to the novel-length Dark Vengeance, Book Five in The Brethren Series, which release in November, 2011. No word yet on whether Elías will be sporting boxers or briefs.

Dark Passages: Tristan and Karen is available for only $1.99 in a variety of ebook formats, including for your Amazon Kindle and Nook ereader. It’s also coming soon in trade paperback for only $5.99. In fact, as a special bonus for Dark Faerie Tale readers, I’ll give away a signed paperback proof copy to one lucky commenter who answers the following:

Should a paranormal romance hero wear boxers, briefs or boxer-briefs? (Or should he go commando?)

Visit my website for purchase links, excerpts and more information. While you’re there, subscribe to my e-Newsletter and receive a FREE ebook copy of Dark Thirst. There’s no better way to be introduced to the world of the Brethren vampires than with the book that started it all!

In real life boxer briefs are what I like on a man but when I read books…I tend to really enjoy commando ;) The latest Maker’s Song series where Dante pulls down his leather pants..it wouldn’t have been right to have underwear under them. So overall answer..it just depends on the attire and their personality. Thanks for the chance to win.

Hey Sara! :) Great guestpost, this is definitely a topic I find interesting in PNR for exactly the reasons you mentioned.

Should a paranormal romance hero wear boxers, briefs or boxer-briefs? (Or should he go commando?)

I’m a boxer-briefs kind of girl… I like the silhouette of the boxer with the snugness of a brief. In a book though… I kind of think it’s gross when my rational mind gets ahold of it but there is something kind of sexy about a hero going commando. Maybe because it’s so impractical IRL or that it implies a level of risk taking?

Thanks everyone, for your great responses so far! This has definitely given me some food for thought for future books – and makes me glad I decided to throw a scene into DARK PASSAGES: TRISTAN & KAREN in which Tristan goes commando. He’s in a hurry to get dressed, and well, there you go. Why he’s in a hurry and why he was undressed to begin with…? You’ll have to read for yourself and find out.

    Keep the ideas coming!

I think a paranormal romance hero should wear colored bikini briefs (not the tighty whities), or go commando, since boxers tend to bunch up beneath those sexy tight jeans.

I definitely think commando. When you start reading a book and the author starts to list the guy as having his jeans riding low on his hips, it sparks the imagination just a bit and you think hmmmmm lower now. LOL.
