Guest Author: Tracey O’Hara (Guest Post & Giveaway)

Please join me in welcoming urban fantasy author Tracey O’Hara here today to Dark Faerie Tales.  The second book in her Dark Brethren series, Death’s Sweet Embrace, was recently released on January 25, 2011.  You can read an excerpt from the first book in the series, Night’s Cold Kiss, by clicking here.  Go here to read an excerpt from Death’s Sweet Embrace.

One lucky commenter will have a chance to win a copy of Night’s Cold Kiss and Death’s Sweet Embrace.  As always, details are listed at the end of the post.

Welcome Tracey!

The world is where the Darkness is.

by Tracey O’Hara

When creating the first book in the Dark Brethren series, NIGHT’S COLD KISS, I started to uncover this amazing world. At first the creatures that lived there seemed to be hidden away from humanity. But the deeper I got into the story the more I felt they were a regular part of society, open and living among humans even if the relationship was tenuous, with complex governing structures keeping the peace between humans and parahumans.

In Night’s Cold Kiss, we get to learn about the vampiric Aeternus and out heroine, Antoinette – a Venator or hunter, who works for the Guild, hunting the human killing Necrodreniacs who get off on the death-high from taking a human life.

But there are many other races inhabiting this world too. We got a small glimpse of several races in the first book. The biggest in more ways than one being Oberon, a bear shifting ursian of the Animalian race, who has a temper and a penchant for leather. He is the one first of the Animalians that I really got to explore along with his partner Dylan who is a leopard shifter.

I like to describe the Dark Brethren books as a series concentrating on a central group of characters similar to what you would see in a TV series. Each book has a self contained story with a different heroine and hero but some of the themes are carried throughout the series. There may even be a possibility of re-visiting a previous hero and heroine’s story in future books.

In the second Dark Brethren novel DEATH’S SWEET EMBRACE, we have a new protagonist — Kathryn “Kitt” Jordan, a parahuman medical examiner and a snow leopard shifter. She has just lost the only family she’s had in the last 20 years, to a psychopathic killer and had her world turned completely upside down.

Now a sadistic killer is murdering young Animalians but cutting out their hearts while they’re still alive in a ritualistic and gruesome manner. Kitt must join forces with a team lead by Oberon to help solve this mystery. Problem is, Raven, who she hasn’t seen for many years, is also part of this team.

We also get to catch up with some of the characters from the first book, especially Oberon and Antoinette and are introduced to a few new ones as well. We also get to find out what the Dark Brethren are and the growing threat they represent.

I am currently working on the third novel in the series. SIN’S DARK CARESS will follow the story of Bianca Sin, a witch who can’t use magic. Again there will be a murderer to find as the Dark Brethren gain strength. There will hopefully be a few other surprises along the way that will keep readers on their toes.

I still have plenty of stories to write in this in this world. I want to explore more of the underwater Mer people. A race who have lived on the bottom of the ocean, largely away from the contact with humans and other parahumans. But now with deep sea mining, oil drilling and the rape of the oceans, humans are encroaching on their realm like never before.

So this is my world. It is full of my favorite creatures.

You can find the glossary of terms here.

Author Bio:

Tracey O’Hara was born in Tasmania, Australia, but actually grew up in North and Far North Queensland. She discovered a passion for writing when researching her family history and started with an Australian colonial saga.

She grew up reading Stephen King, Raymond E. Feist, Frank Herbert, Isaac Asimov, and J. R. R. Tolkien, and developed her taste for adventure and the paranormal thriller. Her love of fantasy, horror, and science fictions soon had her exploring darker subject matter.

Tracey also enjoys listening to heavy metal, reading and writing, and watching action movies with her boys. She lives in Australia with her husband, two sons, and three cats. She is the author of Night’s Cold Kiss and Death’s Sweet Embrace, and is currently working on her Dark Brethren Urban Fantasy series.

I love reading about Vampires and Werewolves. I love when a wolf and a vampire are connected in some way, like the animal to call, or the animal to help protect the vampire at all costs. More of that together would be great :).

It seems like if I can think of a creature or have heard of it, authors have written about it, but one creature I’d like to read more about are sea dragons – Keri Arthur is the only author I’ve come across that has written about them.

There are tons of fantasy creatures I love reading about! Vampires, Werewolves (or in some cases, Shifters), Witches, Angels (Fallen or otherwise), Nephilium, and one of my newest favs, faeries! I’ve been loving all of the faerie books I’ve read lately, especially the ones where the character had no idea they weren’t human. :) Hmmm, I wish there were more stories like Firelight, with humans being almost mixed with dragons. It’s definitely pretty unique, and I loved the story :D

I love just about all PR. My top favorites are probably Shifters, Angels, & Fae.

What I would like to read more of is probably the “guys” of some of the stories who don’t want to fall in love (but always do) or who are planning on NOT falling in love. Just coming out and saying “Look, I just don’t want to love you. I do, but I definitely didn’t plan on it. And I still don’t want to”.

I mean I guess I think when they all do fall in love, it’s like they “forget” how much they didn’t want it. LOL :P

My first forray into paranormal romance was with Larissa Ione’s Demons and shortly after that I discovered Vampires. I’m a girl drawn to bad boys so my love is with vamps and demons :) I’m also a mom of three and my youngest, my daughter has taken up a love for fairytales and I would love to see some adult books take up some of those themes. I love reading them to my daughter, but coming from an adult perspective I want more from the characters, more struggle, more walls being thrown up and then broken down and duh, some hot bedroom scenes please!!

I love shifters, esp. cat shifters. I would really like to see more gargoyles.

Sadly all the creatures I love have plentily been written about, and they are werewolves and vampires, though I just read a book that talked about gulons, they are humans that transform into big powerful cats that are about 3 meters high and ferocious and kill vampires in one strike.
    They are quite fearless.
But in the book one of them fell in love with a vampire and another one was 1/3 human, 1/3 vampire and 1/3 gulon and she was absolutely beautiful when she transformed and was the leader of the gulons. oh and she was also in love with a full vampire.
So maybe that would be something I’d like to read about more.
    thanks for the giveaway

I like reading about vampires and shifters. You don’t see too many books about warlocks other than the Dresden files.

One of my faves are werewolves and other shifters but I’d like to see more of the traditional werewolf that’s half man half wolf. And I think it’d be cool to see more goblins, trolls, centaurs and different kinds of dragons, like sea dragons.

+1 I love reading about witches or supernatural people that can cast spells like in Beautiful Creatures. I wish there were more authors to write about witches or something similar to them.

I like reading about just about any fantasy creature, I’m not picky. I’d love to read more about some of the more obscure creatures, like lesser gods or lesser known mythologies.
